I — _____
It* IT-rn -i-u by Don. F C. lidiiidi,
VI r. Hoke Siultli ..nd Gen. Toiiiiilm.
According to notice Hon. F. C.
Furman, the champion of Mi Hedge
ville, a<ldres-etl our people at the
court house on Friday las’, during
(lie noon rccess of the court. He was
introduced in very complimentary
terms hy Cl. Abtla Johnson. Mr.
i 1“ urman then proceeded to discuss
! his side of the question with ability,
and if there were not good or beth r
: arguments on the other side, his
speech would have been v. ry con
vincing. He xvas listened to xery
attentively, and we must say that
ltis earnestness was received as an
. indication of his honest convictions,
ilis speech was a -trong one for Miil
edgev.iie, and gave evidence that he
had studied his subject well.
M r. Hoke Smith, of Atlanta, being
present, was called upon arid intro
duced by Gen. Young. This was the
first speech of Mr. Smith on the
hustings. All in all, it was a most
convincing argument iti favor of A
- ianta, and will long be remembered
as a tine success for the cause he ad
| voeated. He had the disadvantage
i tif the want of experience in the dis
cussion of his subject bi fore the peo
pie; but the friends of Atlanta were
entirely sali.-fi< and with his effort, as
! the rounds of applause that greeted
him fully testify. Mr. Smith will
j some day become a good speaker on
I the hustings.
| Saturday was the great day of the
| week. It xvas the appointment of
i Gen. Toombs. Had it not been that
Ia rumor had gone out that he would
! riot be present, the court house could
not have held the crowd. As it vvaf,
! our large court house xvas filled,
rammed and jammed with listeners
The General made one of the great
speeches of his life. He was greeted
at almost every sentence with rounds
of applause. He discussed in full the
principles of the nexv constitution as
| the work of the people through their
I delegates. Coming to tho economic
i of the new constitution he discussed
, these at great length, and ended that
| portion of his speech by stating that
I he was in favor of Atlanta for the
i reasons that he thought that the
; question of an economical adminis
; tration of the government and pul lie
| convenience equally demand the
• capital to be in Atlanta—closing by
saying his letter fully stated his rea
j sons for fa\'o: ing Atlanta. [That
| letter will La 1 f >:id on our first page,

At tho e< n '!udon of Gen. Toombs’

| once* a man win*, though he had never
visited cur town before, was well
! known to our people—Atlanta’s giant"
’ champion, Samuel W. Small. Prob
ably a speech from any other young
man in the State would hpve .sound
ed fiat and j wring to ears ami iu jyi s
I of the assemblage after the brilliant
i effort of Mr. Toombs. The people
i seemed to think another speech
i would have spoiled their leceut en
joyment, and began to walk slowly
to the door, but when [>f r. Small ut
tered his first words it seemed hj if
ilie immense crowd knew they were
the* toned of an orator. They lin
gered, and In n f vv sentences Mr.
Small had them chained to their po
; sitions and kept them intensely In
tercsted until the close of his short
and brilliant epe< eh. We regret ex

fur publication. Every young man
in tin; State should have heard it.
It xvas a beautiful, masterly effort,
t which at once made the eloquent
young orator distinguished in our
| community.
; So far as our information extends,
we are of the opinion that Atlanta is
daily gaining ground, and that Bar
