The War*
It in real bewildering to read
the war news from Europe, as fur
nished by the cablegrams. We
read down one column and iccl
perfectly satisfied that the mor
row will bring us news of a dec
laration of war by England, but
in the next column we find posi
tive assurances that the prospects
for peace are very high indeed.
It is, undgr the circumstances, but
mere guess work with tho best of
us, and our opinion on the subject
is worth just about as much as the
weather predictions ot the patent
medicine almanac man. It is well
known that Russia has, for a long
time, wanted to get free and un
interrupted access to the Mediter
ranean sea, and thence to the At
lantic. To do this it is necessary
that the Bosphorus and Dardan
elles be under her control. This,
really, was the object of the late
war between Turkey and Russia,
Russia was victorious, and has
gained the long sought prize ; but
now comes the English govern
ment and puts in her objections
to Russia claiming the fruits of
her successful war. England un
derstands lull well, the people
with whom she is dealing, and
knows that on the day* that the
Russian government has tree ac
cess to the high seas, by other
routes than the ice bouud Baltic
on that day she will have a rival
naval power that will override
the ‘^mistress of the seas.” Ru*
sia. having acheived a realization
of the dream ol a century, will be
slow in lelinquiidtiiig her rights.
Great Britain seeing the impend
ing danger to her maratime su-
'pfJrtSFitJ"Wilt" be equally as Slow
iu acquiescing to tho demands of
Russians. England wishes to dic
tate to Russia, and Russia will
not submit, therefore we think
that a war is alnn st inevitable.—
