Mr, Editor I The good boon
says that We must have trouble,
trials and tribulations, jars and
rumors of wars. Now we huve
private fights and public fights.
It seems that Thomas Grant and
Cary Atwater, (both colored) had
found a passage that they had de
termined to fulfill, which resulted
in a cut and brnise. It seems that
the said parties were playing for
fun. but by some misapprehension
or misunderstanding that arose
between them,and to take revenge
in the shortest way possible, Cary
gave with a club, I suppose, to
the person of Thomas, a "violent
blow." Unfortunately he bowed
too late, the club taking effect in
the upper story of his, of Thomas’
head,. While uuder that influence,
Thomas made forward to return
the compliment with an open knife,
inflicting a painful wouud in the
abdomen of his antagonist, but
not seriously.
We are also pained to chroni
cle the death-blow that was in
flicted upon the body of Buck, one
of our noted Characters ol the ca
nine tribe, bearing the brand of a
full-blooded hound, of the firm of
Buck, Hunter and Coon. He was
murdered by one of his neighbor
ing playmates, in the public road,
near his place of abode. The mur
derer bearing the mark of a male
swine, from the plantation uf Mr.
C. N. Baines. We extend our
heartfelt sympathies to the be
reaved sportsman. But ah ! our
consolation. Uncle George Hol
loman's pack survives,not of filty-
two, but six hounds that can beat
all creation running.
Our friend Milton, just beyond
the mill, says just give him six
months more, and he will huve as
many good hounds as Mr. Any
body, a little more age wanted
Time changes everything, from
good to bad,and from bad togood.
Twenty years ago, we had to ad
vertise to get a pack of houods
when they were required on pur
ticulaf occasions. Now we can get
multitudes of them with the sound
of the horn. Four-fifths of our
good people ate burning about
one-half of our precious daylight'
in the interest of the hounds. I,
myself,have two, and making dai
ly exertions to get more. 1 heart
a reliable gentleman say the othe
day that he ‘did actually believel
that we would huve hounds to
clerk for us in our store in the!
next change, which is no more
than similar ones that have al
ready gone into vogue. The for
ty-fourth Congress made some
very heavy surges to bring “Civil
Rights’’ between the whites audl
blacks, but some how or other itl
was so much like oil and water, it]
would not mix.
