ise to be as br let as the cir* urn-
stances admit.
I was startled by a retmrk made
on the streets a few days ago, by
a citizen of the place; that, “when- j
ever a person writes an article fur
a paper, they solicit criticism,”
I had never thought of it in that
way, and expecting, as an ‘‘ama
teur," to receive charity at the
hands «.f a generous public rathei
than severe criticism, I ventured
to wriie a few pl*-ces. Hoping
still, that a majority of your read
ers will excuse my not b^ing in
competent hh some here; “who
could if they would,’' add much
interest to Vutir columns. I pro
ceed by stating, that. “Lillian"
has lui-mkeu my intention in tins
di.-cu-shoi.
llei idea that I am endeavoring
In obstruct her way Mid preveii'
her maching the desired (h-stina-
eriuiienua In ttilth My
purpose was the very reverse. I was
searing to aid her in the accom
plishment of her purpose, by im
peding h*r progress in one dilec
tion; in * rd r to mid fresh zeal in
another. In gliding down the
stream of life, we may all expect
for our boats to come in contact
th tough waves,which the liible
teach* s us, are to make us pr* ss
mere zealomly forward, that, we
may gain t he hind of promise, on y
to bo obtain*d through final per-
.-eveiaticc. If “Lillian" will refer
to the piece under the caption of.
“The coming mm,” she will find
that my construction was just and
generous. That tuy reference in
tended to convey the idea, that
only a few girls 1 nuked on life as
a “reality," the greater number,
as an “imaginary picture/' From
her style of writing, I judged her
to be one of the fotmer, not, “de
void of female modesty," at all,
for in picturing a “true maiden,"
I see no reason why her own char
acter istics should not have been
portrayed in a general manner, in
advancing her ideas of what it
takes to constitute one, that is to
say, that any description of a true
woman, by whomsoever written,
would boa portraiture of “Lilliau.'
If she is in possession of these
qualities, (I am conviuced Lillian
is) tbeu 'twould be impossible to
write on the subject, without some
part being applicable to her, there
fore I trust Lillian will change
her miud and not longer entertain
toward me such an opinion.
I will does by hoping “Oznola”
may meet with an able antagonist
from his own beautiful village in
in the reply ot either /Annie El
ton/' or “Minnie Merle."
Very truly;

The Superior Court of CruwfpK*
county lii.-it w. «k, says ihe Ti-legv.iph

inal matters. The cases which attract-
oil most interest wen* the trial of the
negroes charged with the murder ot
Mr. Murchisou. Tim conviction «1
Joe Hall was mentioned iu these col
umns several days since. Since that
time another one of the accused has
been on (rial, and was also found guil
ty, with a reooumieudatiou to thu mer
cy of the Court Judge Simmon* pro-
uouiicud a sentence of ninety-nine year*

defendant*. Joe Hall will go to wo.-k
on his sentence in a short while.
Tins other case will ho carried to the
Supreme (Joint. Hall has made a c m-
feaslon of the deed. Tho two othet
colored men, koiih of Gittuit Thurman,
wore not trim I hut discharged.
Tho cases created u profou ud Roush*
tiou throughout the county. The bru
tality of murder, the mystery shroud
ing the crime, and all the attending
circumstunces, make it one of tho most
iuteresiing which has occurred in
steady, nnseusatinual Crawford county
in many years. Judge Simmon*
throughout the court, presided with
ht-coming dignity, and dispatched much
business.
