Posey,of this county, killed a few days ago on the plan tation of Mrs. Pyron, a hawk which measured 4 feet and 6 inches from tip to tip. It is astonishing each month, J wj J i yet true that the hawk had caught a turkey weighing 15 pounds and earned it 300 yards from the spot where it was caught.. He was a kind and af fectionate son obeying the command of his parents and had recently jo'ned the Merhodist church. The bereaved mother, sisters and broth ers have the sympathy of this com munity in their bereavement. He caught it just above Mitchell’s ferry, near the shoals. We have received a communica tion from Carsonvilie, which will appear in our next issue, also a special invitation to attend a grand festival to take place at Antioch Baptist church on Friday evening the 20th inst. Ev erybody should assist in the enter- pri e. A pleasant entertainment was given at College chapel on Friday night last by the pupils of the school. A very large attendance of our citizens were present. Col. H. A. Mathews of Fort Valley,was cot, present as was expected. The programme however was well ar ranged by Prof Means The essays and speeches by the little girls and boys were well delivered,and all did remarkably well. The debate by the young men of the school was the most interesting feature. Their subject: “Which is the most incen tive to tnan,the fear of punishment or the hope of reward.” After sev eral most eloquent speeches by our young gentlemen, Mr James O, Mangham, the chairman of the debate, rendered his decision in fa vor of the affirmative Sufficient incidents occurred to make the eu- tainment amusing as well as inter esting. Mrs. Oliver, living near town was fearfully frightened on Friday night last. Her husband, Mr. W. J. Oliver, had been absent from home for several days in Crawford coun ty, and Mrs Oliver with her little family decided they would attend the exhibition given at the college chapel on Friday night. On their return h one about nine o’clock, a large pair of Bhoes was found lying inside of the gate, and Mrs. Oliver and her sister knew at once ihere was something wrong. After en tering the house and remaing a half hour, some person entered the back piazza, as if approaching the door. Mrs. Oliver at once gave un alarm, and securing her gnn fired the con tents of one barrel out the window. The would-be-assassia informed Married.
