A WISE MEASURE.
Got. Beaver, of Pennsylvania, has
proven himself to he u very wise !
and humane public official, in the
hour of the dire distress of the peo

lie has been upon the ground, in
person which was swept by the

great flood, and has wisely and prop
erly taken charge, on behrdf of the
state, of the entiro work of remov..
ing the great accumulation of rub¬
bish and debris of wrecked houses
of the ruined city, and of restoring
the rich valley to its wonted habit-,
able condition.
This was an exceedingly wise and
proper courso for tbo governor of
■the great commonwealth to pursue,
and ranks him high among the he*
rocs of this mighty nation, and a
statesman equal to (he great emer¬
gency of the hour.
‘ Gov. Beaver has taken charge of
the work on behalf of the state, and
has arranged fop the treasurer to
pay fqr tho same out of the public
funds. This prompt action upon the
part of tho governor will certainly
meet with tho hearty approval of
all good citizens of Pennsylvania, as
well us of the entire country.

which he has asked 200 of tho
wealthy and gonerous citizens of the

demnifying the treasurer for any
possible loss or troublo on account of
Using the public funds in that way.
It appears to us as a very humane
and righteous courso the governor

when it convenes.

has abandoned the project of making
a bond for the money to bo used, and
has borrowed from the banks enough
to pay for all tho work necessary to
