SILVER WINS IN TENNESSEE
The state democratic convention
of Tennessee met in Nashville on
Thursday last.
The convention was called to
nominate a candidate for governor
and other state officers, and to se¬
lect delegates to the Chicago con¬
vention.
The great issue before the people
of Tennessee, as in all the states
in this campaign, was the free
coinage of silver at the ratio of 16
to 1.
And the silver men won by a
large majority.
Col. Bob Taylor, the champion of
the free silver cause, was nominat¬
ed for governor and will be elected.
The entire state delegation to
the national democratic convention
are all for the free coinage of sB
. ver, and a rtf instructed to vote as a
unit upon tfhat as well as all other
questions,
Tlie platform adopted is a strong,
plain, and unequivocal expression
of sound democratic principles, as
enunciated by the patriotic fathers
of the republic, while its position
on I lie currency question is as clear,
as the noonday’s sun in its demand s
for tlie free coinage of silver.

The Puatporm.

declares its abiding faith in the !
great fundamental principles that
gave it birth—
“i. A rigid restriction of the
federal poiver within the written
limitations oflhe federal constitu¬
tion.
“2. The largest measure of in¬
dividual freedom consistent with
the general good.
“3. The jealous preservation of
the right of local self-government
and constant opposition to the en

ment upon the reserved rights ( f
the ]x*op!e of the states.
“4. We hold that it is the high
duty of honor of the democratic
party to call back the
to the old paths, to restore
and virtue, and to root out all
pernicious influences which
corrupted its legislation and the ad¬
ministration of laws. As a

end, we demand the restoration

law providing for the free and un
limited coinage of both gold and
silver as full legal tender money,

the action of any other nation.
“5. We demand the enactment

any discrimination for or against
either.
“6. We oppose the increase of
the public debt by the issuance of

the gold standard

tions of the United States shall he
honestly discharged according to
the terms of the contract in either
( gold or silver at the option and
j convenience of the government and
not in gold ,, alone , at lire , option

“8. We demand the repeal of
the unconstitutional 10 per cent
tax on the issue of state banks and
; the abolition, at the earliest possi¬
ble time, of the national banking
| system.
“9. We demand that all federal
taxation shall be strictly and only
for revenue for the support of an
economically administered govern¬
ment, and we condemn the policy
of the republican party in prosti¬
tuting the taxing power to enrich
the few at theexpenseof the many.
“10. We demand the enactment
of laws taxing incomes in order
that those who enjoy the largest
measure of government protection
shall be required to bear their just
share of the public burdens.
“We hereby instruct the delega
tion elected by this convention to
vote as a unit on all questions com¬
ing before the national convention ;
to vote in accordance with the
principles embodied in the plat¬
form, and especially to vote for a
platform declaration in favor of the
free, unlimited and independent
coinage of both gold and silver as
full legal tender money, at the ratio
of 16 to 1 ; and we recommend to
this convention that it choose del¬
egates from the state at large and
from each congressional district who
are in sympathy with this policy. ) f
