CUT DOWN APPROPRIATIONS.
The proposition to cut down the
salary of the governor and some
of the other state officers, is not
the proper way to begin the re¬
trenchment that is nenv so badly
needed in Georgia.
It may be all right to cut down
the salaries of some of the officials,
jerhaps, but not that of the gov¬
ernor.
That is surely small enough.
It used to be too small, and even
niggardly, when money was more
plentiful than it is now, and the
cost of living was higher.
But now it is just about right,
as the price of everything is rea¬
sonably low.
Let the governor’s salary remain
as it is, but cut down the appro¬
priations.
That is the way to retrench.
Cut down the school fund, and
modify the pension business; then
hew down expenses all along the
line, wherever there is needed re¬
form .
Cut down the appropriations!
Hew them down wherever there
has been an extravagant or profli¬
gate expenditure of the public
money, and relieve the oppressed
tax payers of their present onerous
burdens.
That is the way to retrench.
But let the governor’s salary
alone. It is certainly small enough
now, and ought not to be reduced.
We regret VYial lUc inxxssity ex-
people must have relief. How
many tax payers in Georgia could
pay their taxes today and meet
their other honest and just obliga¬
tions, if pressed for a settlement?
We believe the number would be
astonishingly small.
The school fund can very well
be cut down one half, and the
school term reduced one half ac
cordingly, until the present strin
geney has passed, and business
has resumed its normal condition.
1 his may set back our school in¬
terest a little, but that is better
than to bankrupt our people with
high taxes and only four cent cot
ton for relief.
Then we repeat: Cut down the
appr°priations to a level with the
price of cotton ; reduce expenses
all along the line; and, likewise,
reduce our taxes before they crush
us all into a general bankruptcy!
The Star is no repudiationist,
but it sounded the first warning
cry against the present high rate
ot taxation, when it was first fixed
by the governor, last summer. We
foresaw the trouble it would en
Uil upon our people, and as it
was
our duty as a public journalist, we
have cried out for reform in J 1
* ‘
matter, and we now feel more than
ever that our people must hav e
re-
pleased be
to have my friends call

the passage of a dog law.
The “fusionists, > y in North Car

it.
It is stated that Georgia uses
twice as much fertilizers as any
other state in the union. Maybe
that is one reason we are all getting
so poor.
It is time now for the governors
of North Carolina and South Caro¬

little wars are now over, and their
states are safe.
The naval authorities have or¬
dered a mobolization of our big
battleships in Hampton Roads, in
order to be ready for visiting Spain,
if the peace commissioners cannot
settle the Philippine question sat¬
isfactorily to your Uncle Samuel.
But then, we do not believe there
will be any more fighting. What
could Spain expect to gain by a re
newal of hostilities ? She has no
navy—in fact, she is helpless.

EMORY COLLECE.
Hv E-P ile
Oxford, Nov. 19. (Special to the
Star.)—T he Emory boys, and the
people of Oxford in general, are
, looking forward to the celebration
of thanksgiving day with a great
deal of pleasure, especially the
landladies (?). It is generally un
derstood, or at least hoped, that
“Turkey, in Greece,” will consti
tute the “William of Fare” at the
many hash-houses in Oxford, on
that day. This delightful change
from (Chaucer’s) beef and (Demp¬
sey ’s)batter-eakes, together with
no recitations for that day, is en¬
ough to make the caged college
boys’ hearts overflow with sincere
thanks.
Aside from this, the students
and faculty of grand old Emory
have numberless things for which
to give thanks to their Master and
Preserver on that day. This they
will do, in fitting ceremonies of
worship, at the church in the mor¬
ning.

A gala occasion was that given
bv Mrs. C. J. Howell, to her thirty
odd boarders, one night last week.
The occasion was a banquet, at
which the principal menu consist¬
ed of “ ’possum and ’taters.” Mrs.
Howell is an up-to-date boarding
house keeper, always studying out
some device by which to please her
boarders, and she never succeeded
better than on that occasion. At
the early hour of 5:30 o’clock the
beautiful dining room was filled
with anxious participants. Mr. W.
H. Hosch was chosen toast master,
the man for the place. He followed
himself with a corps of young
(t Demostheneans,” of which Mr.
Elam Dempsey was chief, When
the speeches were over, all joined
in a low muttering tone of a song,
had by Mr. Alex. Odum: "M.
Oh, the ham bene am sweet,
The ’taters am good, and
The ’possum fat am very, very fine, etc.
At the conclusion of which Mr.
Broom, of Newnan, brought in the
i < > possum and ’taters,“and the
boys did the rest.
