imnaa Mandeb.—A practical
farmer aara that be always applies ma
nure aa a top dressing for a wheat crop,
and denrea double tbe Iwnefit from it
uaed in that way. Tbe growing Besson
f r wheat in tbe fall being a ahort one,
it it adriaable to apply tbe manure in
a.u-h a way that ita effecta will lie imme
luta. It ahould be finely pulverized.
Cblebi.—“After trying for a number
of years almost in Tain to raise good
celery on ordinary dry garden toil,"
says a correspondent, “ I finally bor
rowed the nae of a little patch of re
claimed swamp land—deep, black mark,
well drained bat moist, and for the past
two seasons hare grown on it Tory fine
celery with bat little labor. So I shall
never again attempt to grow this veg
etable on common garden soil without
some cheap and easy method of irriga
tion.”
Free thb Faurr Trp.ru.—Muck in
jury baa been done to fruit culture by
the expressed dread some cultivators
have of “ too rank growth, *’ and a con
sequent advioe not to manure. A fruit
tree never suffers from too much manure
If the roots are healthy. If a tree
.perns to suffer after a heavy manuring
it is only that it was in a bail way be
fore this. Oi course if oua ware to
empty a cesspool, a cart-load of fresh
lime or some other inordinate mass of
food under a tree it would suffer ; but
enr meaning is that no amount of
manure that would be found of benefit to
jiy garden will lie otherwise than liene-
Icial to a fruit tree if the roots be
healthy.
Drilling Wheat.—Many of the moat
aarnest opponent* of this method of
sowing wheat are being converted by
the result of actual experiment. It is
claimed that the use of the drill increases
the nnmber of bushels to the acre.
Wheat sown broadcast and not oovered
more than one or two inehee cannot
find sufficient moisture daring a dry
season to sprout the groin. Deep sow
ing is not advisable, but drilled wheat
leaves the soil in ridges and the whoat
in little ditches, the seed really being
only two inches under ground. It with,
elands high winds better than if broad
cast, which in many localities ti a de
cided advantage.
( Buokino fob the OtmouLio,—A
writer in tbe Rural World describee an
onsuooefiafnl attempt to keep off the
curoulio by smoking hie trees, fifty in
number. A barrel of ooal tar was
bought, and several holes dug six inahee
deep through the orchard. Corn-cobs
were dipped in the tar, plaoed in the
holes and set on lire. Tbe operator
.■ays that he “got a nice smoke,” and
lied his holes to suit the wind. This
work was reposted three mornings in
och week for a month. The whole
prooess did no good, the young fruit be
ing liadly etung. Aa thia remedy, com
ment* Mr. J. J. Thomas, is frequently
recommended by those who have given
■I little trial, such failure* as this are
worth recording. The jarring process,
properly conducted, ia easier, obeaper
and more efficient; if not properly up
plied it ia of little use.
Successful Gardening.— The (mule
mental principle o( lUoocHsful garden
ing, eaye a writer, is plenty o( well-rot
ted, fine manure, and no look of “ elbow
grosee.” These two elements, applied
with judgment, will make gardening al
ways successful. There is no better
manure for any crop than an abundauoe
of rich stable manure, made by horses,
cattle, sheep and swine, composted
with earth and sprinkled, when fresh,
with a dusting of plaster. Pile in a
large heap and turn the pile over till
well-rotted. Dig or plow deep ; incor
porate the manure well with the soil;
pulverise thoroughly and put plenty of
the fine manure in the drills, as well as
broadcasting or spreading it over the
soil. For a specific manure for onions,
there is hone superior or equal to fowl
manure, mixed well with fine earth
three parts of fine earth to one of the
droppings from the hen-roost. One of
the best preventives of insect depreda
tion on garden stuff is a very rich soil
(hat will foroe vegetation so fast as to
defy {be attack of insect enemies in a
great measure. The only effectual
remedy against worms, after they ap
pear on vegetables, that has ever been
discovered, is pofron ; but it will not be
prudent to apply it to cabbage. The
host substitute is s flock of turkeys.
Turn them loose into a tobacco patch
or a cabbage patch that is infested with
*°rms for s few successive mornings,
and but few will be left that they can
reach. Sulphur and plaster or ashes
sprinkled on the line will destroy them,
or sir-slaked lime sprinkled on them.
WiSUMi non Roads. —The wash
ings from the public roads that accumu
late, in ditches and pools into which
lead contain a vary large amount
of fertilising material They oontain
among other valuable materials the solid
and liquid droppings of animals, the
foliage and stalks of plants, the leaves of
troen and earth of various amis that has
bean reduced to a great degree of fine
new by the Use* of animals and the
wheels of carriages. The value of the
first-named substance is acknowledged
by all farmers Many are unacquainted
with the use finely-pulverized , arth,
but those who have employed it speak of
it in the highest terms. The sweepings
at the strssts of most European cities
and lowm an diapeaad of farmatalhaa
aMgb to pay for eollaetiag them.
They ara difficalt to handle as they are
1 table to be blown about by the wind.
Whan applied aa top dfwaaiag to graaa
land they produce remarkably good re
sults. The like ia true at their turn am
grain fields. The loose materials an
r< tad-lied* era earned by nuns into
•titrhea, where they are accumulated or
conveyed, if tbe land ia deeoending, into
hollows. There they accumulate, and,
after tbe water has passed out of them
by drainage or evaporation, they assume
a compact form. Tbe consistency of
the material allow* it to be lifted by tbe
shovel into earta very readily. It may
be spread over gram land where it will
dui integrate by tbe action of rain, or it
may be applied to soil that ia devoted to
any cultivated crops. Tbe value of finely
pulverized soil as a fertiliser ia admitted
by all who have experimented with it,
and ita employment will be general in
tbe agriculture of the future. —Chicago

OiutAM to use with any kind of layer
cake is mado from this recipe: Take
one pound of blanched almonds, pound
ed to a paste ; one coffee oup of thick,
sour cream; two table-spoonfuls of cotn
starch, scalded in a little sweet milkj
bent all together and spread between
the layers of cake; flavor with a little
almond extract. This is very rich, and
is suitable for the nicest kinds of cake.
For more common use an inviting ctyam
may be mado in thia way : Take a pint
of sweet milk, thicken it with half a cup
of oorn starch, add half a oup Of sugar,
and boil nntil the oream or onatard is of
the consistency of starch. When al
most cool add one table-spoonful of lemon
or vanilla and spread between the layers
of the oaks.
How to Man Bkkfstbai Tender.—
The best and most thoroughly certain
way to make your beef tender is to
stand in with tho boy who drives butch
er’s wagon. I discovered this while
living next door to a millionaire who
dealt with the meat man that supplied
me. The boy driving the wagon was
corruptible, like the steaks he served,
and 15 cents or so would transfer the
tenderness of the millionaire's 40-cents
a-pound porter-house to my bundle of
8-oent round Then I would whet my
appetite listening to the millionaire's
hired girl walloping the other eat with
rolling-pins, eta, as advised by Mrs.
Leslie. By changing butchers as often
as the millionaire did I secured tender
beef until my lease expirod. Two
weeks before this, however, the millioo
sire died with loekjaw, inducted, the
doctors said, by attempts to chew tough
meat.
