A Negro About to be Sentenced to
Death Addresses the Court—
- A Remarkable Scene.
Wm. H. Fink,a quadroon,whose
parents are pious people belong
idg to the A. M. E. Church in
Georgia, was sentenced, May 11,
to be hung on the 19th day of
$ at Fort Smith, Ark., for the
mil rue r of two of the three guards
,iho had him in custody for horse
stealing.
As was expected by rftany,
Fink,- when asked by the judge if
he had anything to Say why sen
tence of dtfaflh should not be
passed upon h : m, afose, calm and
Collected, and said in a distinct
and father musical voice :
the' prisoner’s plea.
“May it please the court: I
know not which weighs the heav
iest upon me—wonder or grief.
Both weigh heaviiy upon me. 1
must first call to mind the occa
sion which i am called upon to
make my appearance before the
Court to-day. Tins to me is most
solemn and serious, it is as the
sadness of death llselt—death
Which in a brief while will come
to me with sickle aud terror/
Alas 1 alas 1 tin stfdh unlucky
Stars that beamed at my birth.
But 1 anr not possessed of that
Obstinate stubbornness charac £

have sCntenci passed upon him,
more generally speaking,- a
hardened criminal. Being truly

must say tliai tuese are the sad
dest moments of my hie.-
“Dtatn is the destiny of all
tnon ; and being a debt of nature
which must be paid, I do not fear
to meet it in it’s natural form.
But I shudder—l tear—the best
ot us do so. to die a disgraceful
and iguominious death. Ido rrot
make this tallc as an effort to
save my life. It is an effort to
seek justice, and to save the rep
utation of my family, whose hon
or is dearer to me than my life.
For what is life ? It is but a va
por ; it appears a little while and
then wanishelh away. It is but a
Spark struck out of nothingness
and expires in darkness. Nay, it
is but a flash out of daTkness, soon
again to return. As the old Sax
on imagination pictured it,- it is
‘like the swift flight of a bird from
ihj2 night without, through a
lighted chamber filled with
guests, heated with the breath of
passion, back into tire cold night
again.' The strange Uncertainty
of life is but a mock theme Of
pathos. Nff description can
touch all the sorrowful tender
ness which death in me excites,-
how become so tragic and so bit
ter. O! ignominy 1 thou art bit
terer to me than the gall which
Socrates drank. It is not death
1 fear—it is the form of dearth—
its iguominy and the shame of
the gallows. Under my present
circumstances I can but dll my
mind with the gloomy images of
death, and to torment the present
apprehensions of the future.
“But religion does mot coun
tenance any soch merbid anxiety.
She comee bearing Jn her hands
the flowers of hope/ and/ liber the
angel which she is/ whispers of
the crucified Christ, ‘He is- risen.’
The star of hope that first beam

the murderer’s dying faith/ as he
hung upon the cross/a companion
in death with Christ, and that the
Same, star of hope scatters its rays
in my heart. Yet I find it hard
to banish the dread events from
tee. Yet why so? I have always
been honest, and stand guiltless
to-day Of the crimes for which
lam about tor be sentenced. I
stand here and boldly say, with
a clear conscience, that I did*, not
kill those two men. If I sjjeak
lalsely, miserable or happy souls,
whoeter you are, make yonr ap
pearance tfptfn the threshold of
this room and cry out: ‘'thou

the judge)whose duty it is to be
tender as well as just, I ask all
clemency you cabi give. And
now farewell earth made wet
with tears and blood,- farewell,
and to iffy enemies fafewell.
Time’s brief vtork in the ftfCe ol
eternity,* a ray of celestial jov
falls upon me and takes awfty
every leaf, and I know how easy
It is to dre.”
Thus ehde'd the most eloquent
plea eyer made by any prisoner
at couft. The effect, on the judge,
and audience Was marked. TfTe
prisoner Was impassiontfd in his
utterance, a’nd Was rtrofe than
ever pathetic and touching.

fock to shit* sleeves* Tliefe is
an old saying that ‘'it’s only three
generations ffom Shirt sleevOS to
shirt sleetes.” In confirmation
of this an exchange mentions a
great many instances in which
rich and proud lamilies in New
York bave come to grief through
the profiigaey of sons.—With
every possible allowance for he
reilitary qualities, it is entirely
natural . that profiigaey should
follow the common treatrfieut ol
(he sons of lich men. Work, is
what developed character, and il
requires an eiira ofthfrtffy fram
ing to pretent the donioralifiatio.i
ot *a young man who inherits
great wealth. Those who have
grown into usefulness and stead
i:iess when handicapped by in
herited wealth/aie fortunate in
, iheir training or in certain ifther
ited tendencies. Most of the
men who hare accomplished any
thing in the world have been de
veloped by work—ana the ne
cessity of the work which has
been as a fearful Durden to most
men, has also been their salva
tion. There are people who look
upon work as the greatest evil of
the world. But nature has pro
vided lor the preservation of the
best type of mail by maaing
work a necessity of existence.
Men determine, alter years of
severe toil, which has brought
out in them tne best elements ol
human nature in spite of its
sometimes? oppressiveness keenly
felt, that their children shall
have an easier road. These chil
dren never know what sett deni
al is,- what urgent necessity is,
and tlias miss important condi
tions in the development of char
acter. They do not necessarily
become profligate, but they rare
ly become strong, The condi
tions of a boy raised in wealth
are in many respects favorable
to the highest development of
;the mind, but these conditions
are often destroyed by the lack
of discipline which nature insists
upon in the case of boys Jess fa
vorably situated as to opportu
nitieS. Work, serious and useful
work, is what is demanded of
whoever will develop the utmost
possibilities ol his nature. Indul
gence is always bad,- and the
safety of society rests in the fact
that there are always persons so
situated that they cannot indulge
their children as they would like.
The best inheritance a man ean
leave to his boy is a ‘good consti
tution, a good example of indus
try, and good training. With
these any boy can make his
way in thne world. —There id ab
solutely no need to fear for him
though be may not inherit a dol
lar. Money cannot take the
£lace of either of threde things.—
[on6y may aid in making those
most available, but in looking
otjer the history of men it seems
■ safe te say that a young man is
likely to do more for his own char
acter without money than with it.
Tbe bojfwho finds his own place
in life is more firmly fixed than
the boy who is placed by another.
