The convicts were well pleased with the
dinner given them by citizens last Satur
day. The people began to gather at the
stockade oarly in tns morning. The
crowd continued to increase until about
12 o’clock, at which time the large gate

dary line stretched and the spectators in-.

by Capt. Hammett and addresses were
made by Judge J. C. Allen, Win. Elling'
ton, Capt. Hammett and Maj. Bruce. One
of the colored convicts whose name is
Freeman was asked to make a few re
marks. He accepted tbe invitation. His
talk was very appropriate to tbe occasiou.

Hammett’s treatment toward the convicts
