A Time They Have*
Mess is. Editors : The Christmas fes
tivities in Oxford being rather interesting,
a few brevities couceruiug them may be
of some interest to the many leaders of
the Courier. Presuming thus I will nar
rate a few of the happenings during Christ
mas week.
The buoyant spirits of the college boys
for more Ilian a weea foretold the ap
proach of something though the medium
of which they hoped to realize fond an
ticipations.
Thus books becainejusglected and, sub
jects more in harmony with .pending cir
cumstances (I meau mote feminine) ware
stuoied chiefly, that they might receive a
100 (kisses) when they recited. On yei
teniay molding, wua elastic steps, valise
in hand, ami heart m the throat, they
bore their smiling faces on JUo campus,
Hoou leave of uosence was- obtained aud
they were off. We hope their fondest an
ticipations may be realized.
All of us who thought that wo could
wait till alter commencement to see
our sweethearts, nsstm .led, with the
good people of Oxford, at the church yes
terday, aua there was a feast far the eyes
of those who admire the beautiful —a
Christmas tree, almost groaning under the
burden of its fruit. At an early hour the
process of distribution began; and contin
ued quite awhi.e. While some hearts
were mads glad, others were made anxious.
But it was the purpose of the committee
of arrangement, that no member of the
Sunday School should be slighted. Dur
ing tins time some very interesting thiugs
occurred, which made it almost impossi
ble for the time to grow monotonous to
any one. A present was Dluclred, and the
receiver was to be the lady who could
keey a secret. A number of nominations
were made by friends as worthy of the
trust ; but on putting it to a vote of the
audience neither was aecepted.
Dr. Haygoed then Dominated the moth
er of George Washington ; but likewise
she was rejected. Prof. Dowuau said :
Doctor, they wont trust a dead woman.’’
But no definite conclusion was likely to
be reached in this way, so Prof. Scornp
suggested that a book be given to each
nominee, and the oue who opened it near
est the 200th page should receive the pres
ent. Miss Stone was the lucky lady.
Also another, to be given to the most
popular bachelor, not under thirty nor
over ninety. Prof. Magafh, better known
as “Pussie,” was thought to be tbs gen
tleman. The appearance of Santa Claus
was quite an interesting feature, and his
visit quite a welcome one. His coming
was announced by the music of the sleigh
bells attached to his legs and arms. On
each arm was a large basket filled with
choice fruits and presents. Twice he
went out and came again with his basket
filled, and thus all were kindly remember
ed by Santa Claus. Some very handeome
present were distributed which, doubtless,
mads the hearts of the receivers glad on
account of their pecuniary worth. The
occasion was enjoyed by every one, and
all came off with more than they carried.
Now Christmas is past ; and as the negro
| philosopher makes sin the resnlt of idle
ness, when he says :
“If Aden, had had a cotton crop to m ke,
He wouidu’t had time to’ve beeu cuattiu
wid de snake,”
Ho we must go to work I'll state,
Taut we may not share Adam’s fate.
Respectfully, S.J. C.
