rations Facia About Flowers.
Within the antarctic circle there has
never a flowering plant been found. In
the arctic region there are seven hundred
and sixty-two kinds of flowers : fifty of
these are confined to the arctic region.
The? are really polar flowers. The colors
of these polar flowers are not aa bright
and vaned aa are our own, most of them
being white or yellow, as if borrowing
these hardy hue* from their snowy bergs
and golden atari.
Perhaps the most beautiful of all our
everlasting, that longest defy the
autumn froata and most brighten our
winter bouquets, are white and yellow
varieties. The rose of Florida, the most
beautiful of flowers, has no perfume.
The cypraaa of Greece, the finest of trees,
bears no fruit. The bird of paradise, the
most beautiful of birds, givea no song;
aad some of the loveliest erf human forma
have the least soul
The Doroaidae family of flowers,
Buskin tells us, including the five great
orders—lilies, asptuKlels, amarylids,
irids, and rushes—have more varied and
beautiful infiuenoe on man any
other tribe of floweta. Nature seems to
have made flowers aa types of character
and emblems of women. So we name
our children after them, and always in
tuitively compare a lovely, beautiful
child to a flower; we sgy the timid enow*
drop, the modest violet, the languid
primrose the coy lily, the flaunting
marigold, the lowly, blushing dnisy, the
proud foxglove, the deadly night-shads,
sleepy poppv, aad the sweet, solitary
eglantine—theae are all types.

Col. P. Donan, the Dakota statesman
