The annual commencement of the
Kl’ijay Seminary transpired May 2nd,

commencement sermon Sunday in the

their country and their God, aud jhat

MONO AT NIOUT.
A full audience greeted the perform
ance of the Junior exercises on Monday
sight. Mr. Gus McHau and Miss Alma
Mcliau ot Jasper discoursed music iu their
sweetest vein, Tin- eveuing was occupied
by recitations and essays by the little girls
aud boys, interspersed with instrumental
aud yocat music. Some 'of the pi ices
were well declaimed by those especially
adapted to their sentiment. The Clown
ing of the Alay Queen, Miss Victoria
Chastain, was a prominent feature of the
evening.' This young lady, as is well
known, possesses rare peisoual charms,
and this performance only displayed her
beauty more resplendently. Oa the whole

The hall was crowded to overflowing and
seating capacity was an item ot the ex

ed, whilo nothing interposed to mar the
success and pleasure of ths evening.
“Music” opeued the programme by Mr.
McHan and Miss Alma McHau, which
served as a pleasant variety the entire eve
ning. Recitation*, essays and dialogues
were the go for some time, the dialogues
being laughable and entertaining. The
debate of Messrs. Cochran and Ellington on
ttie pulpit furnishing a greater field for
eloquence that the bar, was eloquent, ar
gumentative and interesting to the audi.
ence. Lack of space forbids a more elab
orate account in detail of all the scholars,
but tue declamations of Messrs. A. N.
Clouts, Frank Waters, Jonn Garten aud
Noah Pettit weie pleasing and creditable.
Ihe recitations and essays of Misses Fan- j

rah Hill and Delia Oraigo were charming 1
and met with w..rm applause from the ap
preciative audience, Miss Fannie iLil
in particular being the recipient of many

box of “inquiries” were pithy and ludi

upruarous laughter. The salutatory c.'
Mr. W. W. Hyatt and the valedictory ot
Mr. John Garreu were courteous and
feeling, Bespeaking a warm welcome to
visitois, and a pathetic adieu to teasers
and comrades.
The evening was a splendid success,
and is a flattering tribute to the untir
ing efforts and abilit} of Miss Lizzie Me
Mahan, the accomplished and amiable
assistant who so successfully presided
as stage manager. This lady leaves El
lijay with many kind wishes from all and
a tender memory among those with
whom her labors have been east. This
rounds up one of the most pleasant and
enjoyable exhibitions, and as largely at
tended, as has been furnished the public
by this institution in many years.

OUR NEIGH HORS TALK.
Talking Rock, May 3. —Our lovely val
ley has again donned her beautiful ro e of
green aud sits as a queen with her hillsides
crowned and dotted with rhododendron,
violets, trailing arbutus and other love
ly u'i'd flowers Iho breezes of a per
fect day sway the branches of the beau
tiful trees and send soft shadows playing
over the grass at our feet, and the wings
of the zephyrs are ladened witli sweet
fragianec from a thousand sweet scented
flowers reminding us through our olfac
tory nerves that all nature is alive and
has arisen from her winter fetters and is
going out on her errand of love, doing
God’s bidding urging us t > look forward
to the day when God’s children will lay
no longer in the tomb but will arise and

We went to Jasper to quarterly
meeting heard two most excellent ser
mons from Presiding Elder Thomas.
This circuit ought t<> bo proud of their
pastor, Rev. Mr Smith He is a fine
preacher, a good singer and an excellent
worker. They have a splendid Sab
bath sclino . lam so glad that the
young people art taking such interest
in the Sabbath school, for they have a
flue music trainer in Mr. v mith; indeed
Jasper is on boom - two good schools,
with two as fine teachers, graduates of
first class colleges of orgia. Mr
Kirby, a benevolent gentleman, has
purchased the academy and pr seuted
it to the peop e of Jasper, and now if
they will get up subscriptions and have
seats put in the house an > a 1 the citi
zens get together, lay down old preju
dices and say for the schools to come
together and mate one grand high school
the whole county around would be glad
to send in and make it the first school
of this mountain country Indeed the
people of Jasper have not fully rea izeri
the blessing of such first class teachers
as the two in their town. We do hope
the trustees and good citizens of that
place will consider this matter and act
so as to benefit the rising generation.
We are interested in the young people
of Pickens county and want them to have
good teachers. The most of Lite teach
ers of this county are not competent and
commissioner ought to do his duty and
not give schoo s to men who are indite J
ei her by character or from want of in -
formation. h prese t teacher will
never make scholars of the children that
tjnd their their schools, because they
do not know it themselves. Alzie.
