A Visit to Jasper.
Tbe Cookiek men enjoyed a moat de
lightful visit last week to Jasper, This
little village, comly nestled on an eminence,
commands a sweeping and unobstructed
View of tbe grandest mountain scenery any
where iu tbe South, Ibe town seems to
be situated on a mound in tbe midst of a
great amphitheatre of nature, aud tbe vis
itor stands in wondrous awe, moved at last
by rapturous delight as he gases upon tbe
jetting peaks as they leap up iu rear of
each other. The advent of the railroad
has lent an impetus to the busiucss men of
this town and on almost every Corner can
be seen visible evidences of steady improve
ment Several new houses have grown up
while others are in process of ercctiou, and
altogether the place bears the unmistakable
signs of tangible progress. A flourishing
high school, under the able and successful
management of Mis* Emma Tabor, is sup
ported by the town—a fact highly credita
ble to Jasper. Two live and interesting
Sunday schools are ran bv the town and is
the present terminus of the north bound
trains at night on the M. & N. G. railroad,
A CouniF.it man, in company with u
party of ladies consisting of Misses Corn
Simmons. Sallie Milner aud Tinie Cole
man, dined at the borne of Mr. James
Simmons near Jasper, a place which has
gained quite a popular notoriety as a pri
vate summer resort. This place is a su
perb location, under the constant piny of
a never-ceasing mountain breeze, amt in
close proximity to a chalybeate spring
noted f'r its valuable medicinal properties.
Mr. Simmons was one of the first settlers
of this country, and bis home has been the
hospitable receptacle of travelers for oyer
60 years. His estimable la.iy makes her
house a home indeed for her guests, and
nowhere are the elegance and ease of this
bouse equaled by any private resort in
North Georgia. Among the visitors at
this retreat are Dr. Morrell and family, of
the U. B. Army, Mrs. Renimiugton, of
Texas, and others from Atlanta and differ
ent portions of the state. Dr. Merrcll la
the coming chaplain of the array post in
Atlanta, and has purchased a site at this
place and' will erect a- handsome • and ele
gant summer resuleucc for his family.
Rev. Mr. Gardner and lady of LaGr < ngo
are visiting the family of Col. F. C. Tate
of this place Mr. Gardner preached ail
able sermon on Sunday at the Methodist
church, the bcgiunlng of a protracted meet
ing now in progress.
Col. Bill Tate and family of Tate, Ua ,
were in town Sunday.
United States Deputy Collector Jns. H.
Ringer has permanently located at Jasper
as head quarters of his division.
Messrs. Dupree, Duggar and Higdon, of
Fannin, spoke at Jasoer last Friday on the
issues involved in the senatorial race. 'I lie
political pot received a little stir, and the
probable result of the election is the spec
ulative talk of those who dabble in lovely
politics.
So veral gentlemen are spoken of as can
didates for the legislature. Carter Tate
has made Pickeiiß county a good young
representative, and his many friends would
like to see him returned. There are many,
though, who would like to look after the
interests of the “doar(?)” people.
Sheriff Henderson has sicurely housed
seven violators of the law in the county
boarding-house to await the final disposi
tion of Judge Brown.
Engiueer Barrett of the M. & N. G, R.
H., and family are stopping at Jusuer.
Mrs. Fields, wife of Mr. George Fields,
died last Saturday morning aftera protrac
ted illness.
Pickens county is moving ou as well as
the average county. The ordinary of that
county refuses to grant license for retail
groceries and the consequence is they have
virtual prohibitiou. The criminal prac
tice of Pickens superior court has greatly
decreased of late years.
'1 he new brick store of A. W. Davis
when completed, will add greatly to the
business appearance of the town.
The people of Jasper are sociable and
accommodating, and the ladies handsome
and sweet.
Newspaper Borrowers.
Do you ever thiuk, week after week you
borrow your neighbor’s paper, how tue
man who publishes the paper would live if
every body did as you do ? Just imagine
yourself in the publisher’s place, and see
how you would like some fellow to come
to your house every Sunday regularly week
after week ficm one year’s end to thatof
the next, and borrow a loaf of bread and
take it away and eat it without making
auy remuneration. True you don’t eat
tbe newspaper yon borrow, but you do—
every mother’s sou of you—rob the prill te
by borrowiug your neighbor’s r.eivspa pe
and reading it. because you deprive the
printer of tbe opportunity of selling a pa
per. You say this is a small matter; you
are right, It is a small matter in your case,
but suppose everybody was as mean as you
are, who would take the papers then, and
where would you find one to borrow i
Does it ever occur to you that your neigh
bor who, with long suffering charily and
forbearance, continues to supply you with
literary food through summer’s heat aud
winter’s cold tor many a weary year,
thlnka you are the meanest and most
despicable wretch on the face of the earth,
and wishes you were trausported to the
North Pole or suuk to the bottom of the
