Copper Mikes ik JVlk CorxTT, Tfnv.— These mines are creating quite an excite nent among the New York capitalists of late. The Tribnne, of the 14th, says that “a gentleman of science and of great experience, from London, has just returned from Polk connty, Tenn., and reports that he has never, in any part of the world, seen such developments; he says that the mines on the two paralted veins in that place, for an extent of about four mites in length, will be capable of turning out more copper after they nre thoroughly opened’, than nil the mines of Great Bri tain. Several reports, and some of them from professional men, have been received from that place, and about that place, of such an extraordinary character, that the proprietors of the mines have judged it prudent to withhold them from the pub lic, until persons enough had been there to vindicate the reports from the charge of exaggeration.” Williams & Cos. have sold the steamer “Union” to a company of gentlemen who have a contract for transporting copper ore from the mouth of the Ocoee down the Iligliwassee to Charleston on the East Tenncsseo and Georgia Railroad. The ore is 13 be carried from the mines in wagons over anew turnpike road coir strueted along the banks of the Ocoee to its mouth From thence to Charleston is but 18 miles, and the Jlighwasscc affords water enough, nearly the whole year, for a light draft steamer to navigate that distance successfully. 1 lie copper ore of Polk county has become an important ar ticle of domestic commerce and will be a permanent source of wealth to this section of the State.— Chattanoogq Adv. 14//< insl. Fainting.— A new method of painting has been discovered and employed by the celebrated Horace Vernet. It con sists in making the colors with Olive oil. When the picture is painted, the back of she canvas is covered with a coating of fnllei’s earth, which draws the oil thro’, and ahsoihs it entirely. The painting is thus reduced to the nature of a paste. — The fullei’s earth is then removed from the canvas, and a coat of linseed oil is applied, always at the back; the colors in their rum, imbibe this oil, and all the mellowed tones of the ofJ masters aie obtained Tns EsrtßN Hog Trade.-The principal hog packing establishments at the west are about closing business for the season, which is fully up to the operations of last ye; r. At Cincinnati, np to the 10th inst. the cutii* receipts of hogs amounted to 362,791, against 344,134, the number re ceivcd up to the same time in 1553. Os business at other points, the Cincinnati Gazette says: “At Louisville, New Albany and Jeffer- SGB-ville, the whole number packed up to the Bth insl. was 400,000, against 301,000 last y enr.. The business there is nearly, but not quite closed. The receipts at North Madison, up to Saturday night, were 83,000 head. It is estimated that the packing there will'reach 130,000 head, against 140,000 head last year. The packing at Pittsburg and Wheeling will fall short 20,000 head of last j*ear’s busi ness.
