An awful steamboat conflagration occur e l ia New Orleans on Saturday morning, the 4th inst. afendel with. great loss of life an 1 immense loss of property. At about three o’clock on that morning, the steamer Chirks Belcher , which had just arrived from Nashville, caught lire, mid in a short time was totally destroyed, with a valuable cargo of cotton, tobacco, western produce. The cabin passengers escaped with tueir lives, but fifteen or twen ty negroes were lost. The flames then spread to the steamer, JVnfehtz, jes: arrived with a lo id of > o'ton, 200 bales of which were destroyed. The steamers Crescent and Z>aA Ta rou, recently arrived from Cairo, were next consumed, and afterwards the steam ers Sax >n and Mohican —the former parti ally loaded for St Louis, and the latter with a valu iblc cargo for the Tennessee River. The steamers S niton awl Grand, Turk caught on fire, but passed out, and esca ped with but slight damage. ‘! lie flames caught a cotton barge and quantities of produce on the Levee, occa sioning great loss. Several other lives, it is supposed, have been lost. Chartres street has been destroyed, and two stores badly damaged, and others injured, involving a loss, it is estimated, of $1 0,000. Cotton Burned.— The Savannah Morn ing News of the 9th inst. reports, that on | tiie Tuesday morning previous, ns the : clown freight train came near Station No. I 16, it was discovered that several bales of | cotton w ere on fire. Every effort was made to extinguish it, but notwithstand ing, front 100 to 200 bales of cotton to ’ gether with several freight cars were dc | stroyed. I V’ e also learn that one day last week ; some fiend or fiends in human disguise, 1 placed a log across the rails of the South- I Western Road, which threw off the loco j I motive, by which one of the hands was in-! staidly killed. The opinion gains ground that the Em peror of Russia, will, even at the eleventh hour, forego his ambitious design, and ac cept, with some modifications, the Vienna Note. On the other hand the Boston Rost says.—‘‘Letters received in this city by the last steamer from Europe, directed commercial agents here to foreign houses to enter into no business engagements at present, in conscqcencc of the probability i general European war.” Mii.ia.x Treaty.—The treaty n. gotiale I by Co’. V rom the annual tabular statement of the Railroad Journal it appears, that the whole number of miles of railroad in the United States, in operation, upon the Ist div of the current year, was 15,511 miles; an increase of 2191 miles since Jan. Ist, 1553. Pacific Railroad Bills. —Washington, Jan. 31: Senator Foote of Vermont, will shortly introduce the Pacific Railroad bill, with a capital of seventy five million, one third subscribed by individuals, one third j waved by the government until 18S5, and one third given by government, in consid eration of which the mail, troops, kc are 1 to be transported. At one of the levees at the Palace < f the Tuillcrics in Paris, the train of the dress of the Empress measured at least ten feel in length, and was borne by two ladies richly dressed. Lands to R ailroads. —Bills have passed the United Sta'es Senate, granting public lands for Railroad purposes to the territo ry of Minesota and to the State of Louis iana, to the former a quarter of a million of acres. Jenny Lind. —An English paper says that Mr. Mitchell, the London manager, has concluded an engagement, with Mi dame Goldschmidt (Jenny Lind ) to appear in concert for six monk's during the ap proaching season The preliminary terms are stated at .£25,090. The Patriarch of Weddings. — Rev Sebastian Sirccter, of Boston, married. 189 couples in the year 1853, and made twice that number of individuals happy of course. A young man named Philip Delau-ie. who was committed to jail in Provence to-.vn, New Jersey, in September last, f>r forgery, eloped a few days since with his jailor’s wife. The “fair” one carried off about SIOO with her, and the twain are supposed to be now on their way to Eu rope. Indian Delegation. —The Tampa He rald, of the Ist inst. says: “By the ar rival of the J. T. Sprague we are inform ed that four of the Indian Delegation to the Seminules in Florida, hive visited Billy Bow leg* at his headquarters, and that lie has requested an interview with the entire Delegation, a part of which re mained at Cailoosahathie. The whole number are now in the Indian country, but of their success we know nothing. Thirty-three tons of silver arrived at Philadelphia on Finlay las', from the New Orleans Mint, under the Superinten dence of ex-Marshal Kevser. The spe cie was put in small iron covered boxes, and it required no less thin six cars to convey it (torn Pittsburgh lo the city of Philadelphia. Tois immense treasure was transmitted the entire distance without any extra escort or fuss. In England they would use a regiment of policemen to escort it through a street. Consumption Baffled. —Since the days of Esculapius, medical men have striven in v.do to conquer that arch enemy of man kind, consumption. Dr. Ayer, of Lo. well. Mass , as we have every reason to believe, succeeded in attaining this object, nearer than any predecessor or contempor my. He calls his remedy Ayer’s Oerry Pectoral, by which name it has been favorably known for manv years in ali parts of the world. It is re commended by numerous eminent per sons as the best remedy for diseases of the throat and lungs pxlant. Dr. Ayer recently received a letter from lion. Dan iel Webster, m which that statesman speaks of the Pectoral in the highest terms, and mentions that he is personally knowing to the usefulness of this article in both America and Europe.
