1 o’clock, A. M., when a heavy British column debouched from the forest that skirted the farm in front, in rapid charge on our centre, While a numerous body of savages turned to the right with a,most mucous warhoop and unearthly yell, and poured their fire npon the house and rifles, whose bugles and arms were soon heard in answer. As it passed down the road, the British column received a heavy fire from the right wing, which forced them to deploy, and face the rear rank to thejright about, to receive the fire of and resist the’ left wing, Which had been ordered frown from the hill to form in line with the .right and cover mid defend the artillery charged with the bayonet by the British, In this movement, the American cavalry in the dark had interposed between the left wing and British, and receiving a heavy and deadly fire, the horses became unmanage able, turned and charged over and thro’ the wing, followed by a number of wounded luillocks, wh.cli had been gathered up the day before to be slaughtered for the army. Ihe 16th was broken and trodden down, and it was some time before it was rallied and brought into line. I‘rom the excessive daikncssof t’ c morn big, both armies fell into confusion, and portions of either attacked and fired into each other. Nothing could be seen ex cept at the flashes of the musketry and cannon, the roar of which was roverbera ted again and again over and along the hills and up and down the lake. It was sublime—terrific. F.. D. (J. \ Southern Fnootsss.—The House of Representatives of Alabama, has adopted by a decisive vote, a plan for Common School Education. It is known that the Federal Government set apart every 16th section of the public lands within the Stale of Alabama, for the purpose of rdu cation. This has proved a very unequal bill of apportionment —some of the sec tions arc very valuable, others worthless. The present plan proposes an equal appro priation of the fund arising from the sales f the 16th sections. It is estimated at SBO,OOO, iii addition to an annual appro priation of 140,000. “With this amount,” ‘•ays the committee of education, “which i< a little over one-fifth of the present rev enue of the State, and which could be ap plied without any increase of taxation, good free schools might be established in every township; and Alabama, instead of being the home of thousands of adults who tan neither read nor write, would eventu ally be able to boast, like Connecticut, j that there was a it one such in all her bor ik-rs. ” j Tn Congress, on Monday week, a com munication was received from the Secreta ry of the Interior, from which it appears that one hundred and thirty-four millions seven hundred and four thousand three hundred and ninety two acres of the pub lic domain have been donated by Con gress for school, military, railroad and other pur pesos. Removal or the Seat or Govern ment. — In the discussion at Millerigeville Ust winter, in reference to the removal of the Sent of Government, the IGv. W. Moreley, Senator from Spalding coun'y, warmly advocated the removal to Macon. Tne ladies of that city, as we leatn fto n oar contemporary, the Citizen , have pre sented the Rev. Senator with a hand some Walking Cane, in toke 1 of heir ap- - predation of his services. March 30.-A duel was fought at 9 A. M. A M. on Wednessday morning, at Bladons, ’ Va, between Cutting, of New York, and Breckenridge, of Ken., in which the latter was wounded in the neck. The Attoruey and Marshal of the district left the Court room Wednesday morning to arrest the proceeding. There is great excitement in the House of Representatives. The New York Hards say the matter shall be fonght out by Cutting or someone else. James Raymond, the well known man ager of cirruses and menageries, died at Calmel, N. Y., on the 23d ult. He oiig inated the business about thirty years ago, and impo ted the fust elephant ever shown in the United States. Among his proper ty, which is valued at $1,500,000, are th* Broadway theatre and Washington flotej, in the citv of No v Yoik. j Accident on the Central Ruil- I- • - road. - - W*c learn that a serious accident occur red on Sunday last, on the Central Rail road, while the .passenger train from Sa vannah, was pasfitvg a curve, three ne groes were discovered asleep on the track but not in time to'prevent the a ecu lcm at.— the engine passed over one and mangled it in such a in inner, that no hopes are en tertained of his recovery, while tlio other had liis head, instantly severed from his bo dy. .The third was knocked-off the track by. the cow catcher, made his escape. A fortunate man. — On the 4th of March last, Mr. John Thomas, of Tangier Island in the county of Accomae, Va , received an accession of four grand children born on that night by three- of his daughters. I‘ rom Washington The Senate, on Fridiv, was engaged on the Deficiuey bill, which was passed. In the House, Mr. Pett, as a mutual friend of Messrs. Cutting and B reckon ridge, stated that the differences between them had been honorably adjusted, and apologized to the House for the disorder ly proceedings which had occured. Mr. Breckenridge was in his seat during these explanations. Mr. Cutting, absent, on account of sickness in his family.
