ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION $2 50.
SATURDAY MORNING, SEPT. 19.
mu£>* Tyi'ftE DOTtli.
Wht legions of “fiiends" always bless us,
W&en golden success lights onr way!
How they smi e as they softly address us.
So cordial, good humored and gay.
But oh 1 when the sun of prosperity
Has set—then how quickly they frown,
And cry out In tones of severity. *
“Kick the man; don't you see he is down !
What thought, when you knew not a sorrow
Your heart was as open s day.
And •■friend’’ when they wanted to borrow,
You'd oblige and ne'er ask them to pay,
What thought not a soul you e'er slighted.
And yon wandered altont through the town,
Your “friends” beeaae very near-sighted
And don’t seem to see you when dowu.
When you're “up.” you are londly exalted
And traders all sing out your praise.
When you're down yon have greatly defaulted,
And they really dont’ “f nry your ways.”
Your style was tip-top when you'd money.
iso sings every sucker and clown,
But now ’tie exi cet imrly fur.ny.
You are altered ‘'becauseyou are down "
Oh. give me the heart that forever
Is free from the world's eellleh rust.
And the soul wnose high noble endeavor
Is to raise fallen men from the dust;
And when in adversity’s ocean
A victim is likely to drown,
All hail to the friend whose devotion,
Will lift a man up w hen he’s “down.”
Bea Man.
What a noble thing it is to be a
man! The world is full of counterfeits.
It is a grand thing to stand upright in
defence of truth and principal.
When persecutien comes, some hide
their faces until the storm parses by,
others can be bought for a mess of
pottage. From such turn away.
Stand by a friend. Show thyself a
man. Do not turn away wnen dan
ger threatens to overwhelm him or
you.
Thiuk for yourself; read books and
read men’s laces. Remember the
is the window of tne soul.
Use your eyes and hold your
tongue when men court favors
Select some callirg to make it hon
orable. When you have espoused a
cause maintain it at all hazards, Make
up your mind to succeed by all means
and goo 1 will; brush the difficulties
away one at a time
It opposition comes, meet it, man
fully. If success crowns your efforts,
bear it quietly. Hasten not in a quar
rel, but when you are compelled to
accept an alternative, stand up and
show yourself a full-grown man. Do
your own thinking, keep your own se
crets; worship no man for his wealth,
or illustrious lineage. Fine feathers
does not always make fine birds.
Do not live for yourself alone.
The world needs reformers ns much
to-day as ever. Jf you have a now
idea on ! avor {:> v. top !( into von]*
and deeds. Jit sober; bo honest; bo
true. Policy i*n arc dangerous.
They will sell you for money, or
popularity—do i’t trust them. Wear
but one face, and let that be an hon
est one.
Two Kinds. —There are two kinds of
girls; one is the kitrel that appears
best abroad, the girls that are good
for parties, rides, visits, balls, etc.,
whose chief delight is in all such
things. The other are the girls that
are useful and cheerful in the dining
room, the sick room, and all the pre
cincts of home, They differ widely in
character. One is frequently a tor
ment at home; the other is a blessing-
One is a moth; consuming everything
about her; the other is a sunbeam, in
spiring life and gladness all along the
pathway. Now it does not, necessa
rily follow that there shall be classes
of girls. The right modification would
modify them both a little, and unite
their characters in one.
Over-Eatiau as a Cause of Disease.
—ln tlio course of a letter to tl’e
Times, Dr Carpenter (of Croydon)
refers to the recent effect of impure
air on the fat cattle at Islington! If
it is thought that men or animals can
be stuffed to repletion and yet not
perforin any work, and no serious
consequences result, a great and a
fatal mistake is made. Should we
not learn.a lesson from this great ex
periment, whether we are agricultu
rist feeding cattle for the market or
only common men ? It is certain that
over-feeding ns well as over-drinking
is a great evil. Men should learn
that a good eater should also be a
good worker if he intends to remain
healthy, and that the rule applies to
oxen as well as to men. The ten
dency to fatly degradation of muscu
lar and other tissue is much on the
increase among ns. It i= one of the
causes of the increase of sudden death.
The disease quietly gains ground,
though the victim seems the picture
of good health to the uninitiated; but
rich living in fatty meats with little
work quietly do their work and pro
duce as much disease among us as
does typhoid or any of its allies.
