As almost ever/ lady has a cat, we coppy
for them this way of applying electrical
shocks:
Tho cat—especially the blick kind—is
highly charged with electricity, visible in the
dark, which may de produced thus: Plnce
your left hand on the throat of tho cat, and
with the middle finger and the thumb press
slightly on the bones of the animal’s should
ers; then, if the right hand bo gently passed
along the back, preeeptiblo shocks of elec
tricity will be felt in the left hand. Shocks
may also be obtained by touching tho tips of
the cars after rubbing the back. The same
may be also obtained from tho foot. Plac
ing the cat on your knee, apply your right!
hand to the back, the left fore paw resting on
the palm of your left hand, apply the thumb
to the upper side of the paw, so as to extend
the claws, and by this means bring your
forefinger into contact with one of the bones
of the leg, where it joins tho paw; when,
fr< m tho knob or end of this bone, tbe finger
slightly pressiog on it, you may feel distinct
ly successive shocks, similar to those obtained
from tho ears.
JKSf Ilrummcl in his decay was wittier
thau in bis best days. lie considered him
.self “ independent’’ at Calais, because he had
“little to depend upon and when a hungry
friend observed at his modest table that, no
thing was better than cold beef,” the beau
reqlied, “ I beg your pardon, cold beef is
better than nothing.” A French friend, f.a
borde by name, told biiu that though for
eigners complain of having to pay to fee the
cathedral of St. Paul’s in London, he bad
found it just as bad at St. Peter’s in Home.
He had been up to the dome, and when be
came down a cicerone asked five paolis
(“cinq pau!e,”as heexpressed it,) for conduc
ting him aloft. “Well,” said Brummel,
“it’s very natural, and cpiito in accordance
with our old apothegm, that you should pay
St. Paul to see St. Pierr 1”
Chinese Cookery.— ln a Chinese eock
ery book appears this curious and cruel re
ceip* for cooking turtles: The turtle is placed
in a vessel of water on the fire, with a lid
over it, having an aperture of sufficient size,
and so arranged that the turtle can just get
his head out, and within the reach of highly
spiced wine. As (lie temperature of water
increases, so does Lis thirst, and he gradu
ally g( es on drinking the seasoned fluid un
til ihe heat kills him, by which time liis

the vine-aro iutic seasening, and a flavor,
described as d< Venus, is imparted to the fit sh.
Louis D. Campbell, the new Minis

and bis appointment does not carry the
weight that Mr. I-ogan’s did. Asa hanger
round bar rooms and saloons, and as a man
who had already outlived his influence.
Fenian Outbreak, if we may credit
the newspapers and the vaccination of the
Fenian orators is monetarily impending in
the direction of Canada. Arms have been
seized in New York confessedly d.slined
f r a Fenian military organization, but were
released upon the deelaraii n ofO’.Mahony
that they were his privato property. Can
ada is in a slate of great p-rturbalinn, and
Ir-lanl is convulsed to i:s centre The dis
trict around Dublin has been “proclaimsd”
and all military arms and accoutrements in
tho hands of die people have been seized by
the government. Ev rything portends a
civil convulsion, which will no doubt be
formidable enough to create a good deal of
disorder and bloodshed.
On ono occasion Lord Alvary—
h and [. omi-ud a person one hundred pounds
as a bribe, to conceal son.)* tiling which would
have involved ihe reputotion of a lady. On
that tit’s application fir the money, his

“l'ru",” said his lord-hip, “ I did so; but
you know, Mr. , that I am now mak
ing arrangements with all my creditors at
five shillings in the pound. Now you must
see, M r . , that if I were to pay you at a
higher rate than I pay themi I should be do
ing my creditors an injus'ice !’’
Sir William Curtis sat roar a gentleman
at a civic dinner, who alluded to the excel
lence of the knives, adding, that “ aiticlo"
manufactured from cast steel were of a very
superior quality, such as razors, forks, ko.”
“Ay,”replied the facetious baroner, “nnd

After a loug drought there fell a
torrent of rain, and a country gentleman ob
served to Sir John Hamilton :
“This is a most delightful rain; I hope
it will bring up everything out of the
ground.”
“ By Jove, sir,” said Sir John, “ I hope
mt; for I have sowed three wives in it. and
I should be very sorry to see them come up
again.”
E3T Daniel Purcell, who was a non
juror, was telling a friend, when King
George the First landed at Greenwich that
he had a full view of him—
“Then,” said his friend, “you know him
by sight?”
“Yes,” replied Daniel, I think I know
him, but I can’t swear to him.”
