Soutu-WkstErn Georgia—A corres

ing of tho advantages that Senth-’Wc sb rn
Georgia holds out for se llement, says :
‘ The most important agricultural prod ic
of South-Western Georgia is i upland rice,
which grows on lands that have be n worn
out by cultivati n, yielding to the acre a
quanti y and quality that is surpriiting.—
The rice is planted in checks or tii'ls, about
fifteen inches each way, and Jrom six to
ten stalks left in a hill. A good hand and
hoi se can cultivate twenty-five acres of this
land in rice, which will,-on tn average of
seasons, make thirty bushels to the acre
This, at tLe present price that rice sells for,
gives a much greater rewhrd to l iber than
the best cotton lauds in this Sta'o. With
this rice crop, the same hand and horse
can cul'ivate a small potato crop of several
acres, and an acre in sugar cane, which
will yield ten barrels of sugar equal in
quality to Muscovado siig-.r. The rice
crop needs (o be ploughed twice, and hoed
as often, to insure a good result. This
wonderful result is, in part, explained by
the influence of the snlt-wiGer atmosphere,
which so favorably affects the Sea Island
cotton, the West India tobacco, which
grows fiuely ,n tnis part of the State, and
the Indigo, which is cut three times du
ring the season, and from which the indi
go of commerce is made. As this was in

I cannot urgi too forcibly upon my id—
low citiz ns ihe propriety of complying with
the request of the committee. It was urged
in an espeml manner, upon the Southern
members of the Executive Committee, to
call these meetings, for the purpose of show
ing both friends and foes at the North, that
the people of the South ratified the aetion of
thc-ir representatives in that Convention. i
It is asserted by our .Radical opponents ■
that the Soutkorn delegates did not repre- :
•sent the great mars of their cjDstituency ;
and, that, as a peojle, wo wero yet rebel!- |
ious and disloyal. Hence, this call by fiie |
Committee for the peo[ lo themselves to speak
jin their conn y meeting. It is*not my pur-;
pose to defend here the action of your del- :
egates in the Convention. They aro will
ing far future results to applaud or condemn j
them. While they do not claim that every
thing that was said or done in that conven
tion met wi h their entire approval, they do
assert that, taken in its totality, its proceed
ings should command the approval of every
man who sincerely desires the restoration of
) iraternal relatii ns, harmony and union.
I Enough was accomplished to satisfy us that
I we have friends at the North, who arc mau
j fully fighting in their own States for our
I interest and our rights. They simply ask of
i us to aid them iu their heroio struggle by
> giving them ‘our endorsement.’ They claim
that it will aid them in the eketioos now

say by our notions, we are indifferent and

the front dcor of the houso was fastened
