Siwmr at the motlv prmp from tbo foot
of the-d’ee.k stairs, when our attention was
■attracted bv the singular action of a tall, |
brown Yankee, in an immense wod hat, \
chocolate colored coat and paotnleons, j

raised from She depths of a uapaei ms j

-After mounting gu in’ in this manner,,
be hashed furiously '’.own the gang plank ■
8 h»il up the wharf, Yoappoa ring on bond ’
almost insfantmuMislv, with a flushed,
fauc, expressing the most intense anxic-|
ty. This series of opperations he per
formed several times, after which he I
rushed about the boat, wildly and hope
lessly ejaculating.—
« WWo the time of day ? Wond r
if my rrpcatcr’s last? Whar’s the cap’n?
Whar’s the steward ? Whar’s the mate?
Whar’s the boss that owns the ship ?”
“W’lat’sltho matter, sir ?” we ven
tured tff ask him, when be stood for a
moment.
“Hain’t rein nothing of a gal in a
blue sun-bonnet, with a Canton crape
shawl, (oostfift»en dollars,) pink gown,
and brown hoots, hey 1 come aboard
while I was looking for the cap’n at the j
hind end of tho ship—have ye, hey?" |
“No such person has come on board ’
“Tormented lightning! she’s my wife,’ |
ho screamed, “married her yesterday. 1
All her trunks and mine aboard under j
tbe pile of baggage as tall as a Connecti
cut steeple. The darnd blank nigger
says he can't hand it out, and 1 won’t
leave my baggage, any how. My wife j
only think of it, was to have come ,
aboard at half-past four, and here it is ;
most five. What’s become of her? She
can’t havo eloped. We haint been mar
ried lor.g enough for that. You don’t
think she’s been üblucted, do ye, mister. .
Speak— answer —won’t yo ? O' I’m ra
ving distracted ! What are tb v ringing
that hell for? I. tho ship afir ?”
‘‘lt is the signal far departure—the
first bell. The second boll will be rung
in four minutes."
“Thunder you don’t siy so! Whar’s
the oap’u? 1 ’ (
“That gentleman in tho blue coat."
The Yankee darted to the capUiu’u
side.
“Cip’n, stop the ship f»r tea minutes,
won’t you?"
“Can’t do it s’r."
“But ye mus‘, I tell you. I B
you for it. How much will yo ax?"
“I could not do it." (
“Cap’n, I’M give you tew and dlars,’’
gasned tire Yankee.
The captain shook his head.
“I’ll give you five and a half—
and a half—and a half I’’ hokept repeat
ing, dancing about in his agony, like a
mad jackass on a hot iron platter.
“The boat star's at five precisely,”
said the oaptain, shortly, and nirn and
awav.
“O, you stunny-hearted heatbin !
murmered the Yankee, almost bursting
into tears. “Partin’ man and wiio, and
we just one day married!’’
At this moment tho huge paddle
wheels began to paw the water, ami the
walking beam deccnded heavily,shaking
the huge fabric to the centre. All who
were not going to N w Ilaven went
ashore. The hands began to haul in the
gangplank, the fasts were already cast
loose.
“L"£go that plank !” roared the \ an - 1
kee, collating one of the hands. “Drop
it like a hot pntatoe, or I’ll throw yon
into tho dock 1”
“Yo—yo shouted tho tnon in cho
rus as they heaved on the gangway.
“Shet up, you brayina donkeys,”
yelled the maddened Yankee, “or
there will be an ugly sort of work !”
But the plank was got aboard, and
the boat splashed past tho pier. In
an instant, tho Yankee pithed off his
coat, flung liis hat beside it on the deck
and rushed wildly to the guard.
“Are you drunk or crazy cried a j
passenger, seizing him.
“I am going to fling myself into the
dock and swim ashore!” cried the!
Yankee. “I musn’t leave Sairy Ann i
alone in New York City. You may |
divide my baggage among yo—let me
go-*—l can swim!' 1
He struggled so furiously that the
consequence of his rashness might have
been fatal, bad not a sudden appari
tion changed his purpose. Avery
pretty young woman, in a blue bonnet,
white Canton crape shawl, pink dress
and brown boots, came toward him.—
The big brown Yankee uttered one
stentorious shout of “Sairy Ann!”
clasping her in bis arms in spite of her
strugglejog, ar.d kiseyl her heartily,
light before all tho passengers.
“Where djd you come from ?” ho
inquired,
“From tho ladies’ cabin,” answered
the brido “You told mo half past'
four, hut I thought I’d make sure, and
come pi four.”
“A little too punctual!” said the
Yahkee “But it's all right now Go
ahead, steamboat! 4 ltosin up, there,
fireman ! Darn the expenses 1”
When the sun set, the loving cou
ple were seen seated on tho upper
deck, the big brown Yankee’s arm
encircleing the slendering waist of the
young woman in the blue bonnet and
pink dress. W e believe they reached
their destination safe and sound.
