Some ere mnxzlo loaders, some breech-loaders, some rifled, somoemooth- 1 Hires, Nom ' of bronze. some of cut-uoa. some of tieel. There mo about half a dozen 50-pounders, some fifty or sixty •J 4-pounde—muzzle-loading, some rifled, nome smooth —forty-six 12-pounders, these being bronze nfled breech-loaders. Then there are about sixty mall G-pound ers, mounted on peculiarly constructed carriages, so as to attain a great dera tion, and consequently an extreme range. These are said to be able to throw a shell r.,000 schinta, or nbout 5,500 yards, a range which tho German officers seem to consider enormous. Hut even the now disparaged Armstrongs will easily throw 0,000 yards, or just doable the diston**©. There are some twenty very old-fashioned mortars of bronze, ouo of which is said to have been cast in 1640! There are a few new rifled steel mortars of new con struction—later than 1640, that ia—which cau throw a shell weighing 170 pounds. I may add, in conclusion, that my unfa vorable opinion of the Prussian siege is .shared by Captain Hozier, of the British uruiv. Many of the guns, notably some of the heaviest, are naval guns, taken from the useless Prussian fleet.—St (»«*- utain cor. X. Y. Tribune. W. L. Ayer’s Hair Vigor, BlaUABCK NOT A RADICAL AFTER ALL.— The New York World haa exhumed a dispatch from the American Minister at Berlin, dated July 30th, 1864, which shows that Count Bismarck and liis party were not no entirely on the side of the Federal* in our late war aa the Northern Radical press represents them to have Wen. The dispatch, written at a time when the character of tho struggle be tween the North and South must have been well understood in Germany, says: “Late events at home hare giVcn oc casion to Herr von Bismarck’s semi official organ, tho Xortl Deutsche AUge- ,urine Xeitimg, to display great sympathy and partiality for the rebel cause; and, iu its zealous wishes for tho downfall of republican government and the further establishment of monarchical institutions on tho American continent, it indulges in tho grossest misrepresentations regarding our armies and finances. I have so far refrained from making any reclamation ut the Ministry of Foreign Allairs against its infamous and slanderous course, but I deem it my duty to take notice of and communicate the facts to you. This is a step in advance for Grunt, and now let him stick to it, and not allow himself to bo driven from his own good intentions again by tho Bitter Fuelers of New England. Tue Xeouo l’orclatiox.—It appears that the census of 1870 will show a slight increaso over I860 iu tho negro popula tion, notwithstanding ull tho extraordin ary causes iu operation to produce op- jiositc results. Faded or gray hair is soon restored to its original color, tcith the gltJss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thick ened, falling hair checked, and bald ness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore tlie bair where tbo follicles xre destroy cl, or the glands atrophied and decayed. But such as remain can he saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fooling tho hair with a pasty .sedi ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the bail from turning gray or falling off, and consequently prevent baldness. Free from tlmse deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous, and injurious to tuo hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not barm it. If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else can be found fo desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it docs not soil white cambric, and yet lasts long on the bair, giving it a rich, glossy lustre and a grateful perfume. Prepared by Or. t. C. Ayer k Co.
