Retwoen the hours of 12 o’clock .Sat
urday night nml daybreak Bumlay
morning, a horrible outrage and mur
der was perpetrated upon the person
of Mrs. Elizabeth Hampton, a poor but
highly rc?;>ectable widow woman, who
was employed as cook in tlie family of
’Bquirc itichard Nance, near Versailes,
es, in this county, by a negro man
named Joe 'Woods, the particulars of
which so far as we have l>cen able to
gather them, are substantially as fol
lows :
It appears that Mrs. Hampton had
but recently moved totho Nance place,
and was living in a cabin formerly
occupied by the negro, Joe Woods, who
was well acquainted with the premises.
On the Tuesday night preceding the
murder the negro man went up to her
door and knocked, stating that two
white men wanted to see her. She
replied that white men had no busi
ness at her door at that hour of the
night, and refused to open it. Nothing
more was noticed in the conduct of
the negro man until Saturday after
noon, when he was seen prowling
around Mrs. Hampton’s house and
looking into the interior through a
crevice where some boards had been
knocked off. As she retired to her
house Saturdny night, Woods accosted
her, asking her whether she intended to
take her ax in with her. She told him
she was in the habit of taking it in
every night. The negro then went
away.
As Mrs. II. did not make her ap
pearance at Squire Nai c ■ house at the
usual hour Sunday morning, a party,
suspecting something wrong, proceed
ed to her abode. They knocked up
on her door, hut receiving no answer,
burst the door in, and the lady
was found with hc-r skull badly
fractured, evidently done with an ax.
Upon the bed in her room were lying
her three little children—aged respec
tively five, eight and eleven years—-who
were quietly sleeping unconscious that
they had been liereft, by the hand of
the. foul murderer, of their loved
mother.
Suspicion at once fastened on the ne
gro, Joe Woods, as the perpetrator of
the crime, and instant search was made
for him. lie was caught, and on Mon
day morning examin: tion was had be
fore Esquire Lamb, and W T oods was
committed to our county jail on a
charge of murder.
It appeared in evidence that, on the
Tuesday night preceding the commis
sion of the horrible crime, Woods had
boasted to some of bis colored friends
that he intended to satisfy his hellish
desires on the person of Mrs. Hamp
ton, and about two o’clock on the
morning of the murder, as his wife
testified, she missed him from her hod.
The clothing he had on when arrested
also indicated further evidence that he
was the perpetrator of the crime. In
• addition to ail this, when Mrs. Ilamji-
lon was found, on Sunday morning,
*1'° ufV? Sfi/■o.'ificio.us, tlymgh sinking
fits!, and fvdly inculcated Woods as
her' murderer. Tliorc cannot: J»c a

elegant miscellany of pure, light and graceful lit

specimens of artistic skill, in black and white. Al
though each succeeding number affords afresh
pleasure to its friends, the real value and beauty
of THE ALPINE will be most appreciated after
it has been bound up at the chseof the year.
While other publications may claim superior
cheapness, as compared with rivals of a similar
class, THE ALPINE is a unique and original
conception—alone and unnpproached—absolutely
