Direct Trade with Kurope
We are phrased te> see that 'life
Savannah Republican and the La-
Grai g* Repot hr, if last week, occupy
a port mi of their spa e in insisting
upon a direct trade be ween Savannah
an-i Europe. we. remarked, in a
abort article, a few weeks since, the
only hope for independence from
northern trickery and monopoly, i to
ttr.ablih direct trade. T;e invoat*
xueDt of capital in a few steamers to
run between Savannah, nr 13 unswick
and Europe, cannot fail to prove re
muuerative to the company et gaging
in this enterprise. We think the city
of Savannah is slumbering over its
own interests in not lvi g established
a line of steatn-rs. lheie is plenty >f
capital there. She has an egtahl shed
and increasing trade, and, is t.ic ter
minus of the railroad system "i the
State. In a few years Brunswick wi 1
be able to enter the lists with her, and
inav, possibly, prove a too formidable
competitor and force Savannah rnto the
background cominerci dly. But with
a line of steamers to Europe aheady
established. Savannah may laugh at
the efforts of any rival to supplant her.
The interest of Savannah —of the
State; of the entire South, which
pours its produce into market at
Savannah, demand that action, and
that speedily, should be taken. We
are pleased to notice that this subject
will engage attention at Macon during
the meeting of the Siate Far, when
•II parts of the Si ate will he repre
sented. Let there be a concert ot
action.

Methinks I Ear a sound. From
whence does it proceed ? 1 see a man
standing yonder at the distance of 30 ; i
yards tapping a drum, and the sound
proceeds from the drum. A sound is
anything that can he heard, agreeable,
or otherwise, and is caused by air being
put in motion. It no air were ever pui
in motion you would never hear any
sound.
Mankind e>joy Jiee senses, viz:
Hearing, Seeing. Smelling, Tasting
and Feeling, auo the 8 use of Hear
ing is the s- use of Audition, and by
this sense we enjoy the most delightful
sUaius of music we aro permitted to
hear.
In the commencement of these les

the sense ol Hearing cannot be dis
peD-ed with to become a good musi

A sound appreciable, or of u deter

is called Music, 'The whole number

Our Tonal System compiiss sccen
Primary Tones and Jiee tones inters

mind that Seven. Five and Three are
imp- rtant numbers and will be used

Iu music there are Three natural
Distinctions :
First, High or Low )
Second, Long or Short ;
Toil'd, Loud or Soft.
The elements of music have been
divid and into three departments, to-wit :
Melodics, or J\lclody, signifying sweet
sounds. High or Low in pitch ; Rhyth
mics or Rhythm , indicating the length
of Sounds, Long or Short ; Dynamics,
treating of the power of sounds, Loud
or Soft.
Mi/ody treats of everything relating
to the p tch or height of Tones. —
Rhythm treats of the length of Tones
in full, and Dynamics of the power of
sounds. We will treat of the and ffer

the following report :
The unerring shaft of death has pierced
our ciicle, and removed from tarth to a
world of never ending duration our much
respected asrociate, George Toolet. God,
in II s inscrutable providence, has, in J2\s
afflicting dispensation, bereft this Society

faithful friend. L>v his promptness in dis
patch of bu-iness—by his integrity and
punctually in the discharge of a1! his du
ties—by his mental and moral abilities—he
promised a useful life to ti e Society and
his country. But he is gone 1 The silver
cord has been ’loosened -the gold n bowl
has been broken. The silver pitcher has
been broken at the fountain, and the
wheel broken at the cistern. But we do

displayed in this life, w ill be richly r-.-
w arded in a brighter and a bett-'r world.—
Therefore,
Resolved, That in his death we rccog

Resolved, That we lament the deep af

family of tho deceased, and tender them
our heartfelt sympathy and condolence for
t‘ eir great and irreparable loss.
Resolved, 'font these Resolutions be
spread upon the Minutes of the Society, a

and one to the Baknesville Gazette lor

Resolved, That a blank page in our
Record Book be dedicated to his memory
and inscribed with his name and age.
Resolved, 7 T hat, in testimony of our re
