V The icy breath of winter struck us it/ earnest yesterday morning, and everything is now frozen hard and stiff. This weath cr will not last many days, however, be fore the accustomed sunny warmth of our goaja] climate will again preyaii. Wo are requested to state that Mids Lula Bird will open a School, at the resi dence of her mother, on Monday next. Miss Lula has a good reputation as a tcach ■ er, aud hopes to get a liberal share of public patronage. \ . Mr. A E Bueese, of Washington City; son-in-law of Mr. Jas. Butler, arrived in Blakely on Saturday night last to visit his wife and little girl who preceded him to this place. His family hag increased since his arrival, and lie now wears a gen ial smile while mingling With his old friends in Blakely. The leap year party which came off last night was cnjnyed immensely by those who attended. Quito a number of young la , dies and gents congregated at Mr. llobt. Joyner’s residence, at an early hour, and spent the time in social intercourse. What sort of an out the young ladies made at love-making we arc unable to say, as we were escorted by two of .Blakely’s sweet est daughters, and they did not hare a fair showing at us. Our annual municipal election takes place on Saturday-. What platform the candidates will run on wo do not know; but this we do know, that every interest of humanity calls for an expulsion of the whisky trafie from our town, and men should be elected to the placo who will do this. We have no doubt whisky will flow freely among the non-prohibitionists in their endevora to keep the vilo curse in the borders of our fair little city. Shall Blakely be the last to drive whisky from its borders’ God sordid! Citizens of Blakely, awake to a sense of your duty, and cast your vote for men who will do their part in driving the fatal cup from your lips. Wc are in receipt of a complimentary copy of “Cram’s New Indexed 3lap of Georgia,” showing all the railroads, sta tions, towns, villages, postoffices, &c., from the latest official records. It is pub lished by Hudgins & Talty, No. G 3 East Alabama Street, Atlanta, Ga., and is, we think, the most complete map of the State ever published. It contains the population of every county and every town of importance in the State. It will sell almost upon sight. Portraits of Alex. 11. Stephens, Ben Hill and Gov. McDaniel ornament the map. Call at this office and we will show you a copy of it. t / Mr. D. M. Roberts, who lives some IY south of Blakely, on the Cedar Spring road had the misfortune to lose his large stable by fire, on Saturday night last, about one o’clock. A considerable quantity of oats and fodder were destroyed, being in the loft above the stable. The loss was about S2OO, and will fall quito heavily on Mr. Roberts just at this time. The incarnate fiend who sot fire to the stable ought to be swung to a limb of the nearest tree should lie be caught. Mr. 11. was considerably scorched in his fight against the fiery cl ement and, unlike the Hebrew children, came forth with the smell of fire on his garments. lie has our sympathies in Ins loss. 1883, did you write it? It has passed never to return. Father Time in his on . ward march has turned over a new leaf, on which is emblazoned ic large letters, 1884. Yes, the New Year is here, and many have mado resolutions which, if car ried out, will make better people of them. \\ e had thought to write something of our past deeds in 1883, and the hopes and promises of the News for the pres ent year, but cannot do so on account pi physical disabilities. We will say, how- *gver, that we shall not let a single oppor ' tunity p ass f or i m p rov ; n g our present sheet and shall labor earnestly and un ceasingly to keep our readers posted on the current events of the day. Will you 1 npt come to our aid, friends? Resolve in / your mind that each year shall be better Than the past and carry that resolution into effect. y f F. M. Smith, A. J. Fleming, IU/hT R. W. Davis and J. T. man, arc the names on a ticket for munic i; al honors at the election which comes off next Saturday. These young men say they are tired lookingatdilapidated bridg es and rough streets, and will put them in good order, if permitted the privilege, Von Saturday. We see the ticket is com posed of youug men who are well known in our community, and do business on the north, east, and west sides of the town. Tickets can be had at all the places of “business on election day. There is noth ing like having live and go-a-head young men at the head of a business to make it a success, and it is to be hoped that the cit- of Blakely will come to the aid of / xhese young men with a liberal hand. We sreglad to see this clsss of citizenssomuch interested in the welfare of their town. Lot everybody turn out and vote for the young men’s ticket. / On Thirty Day’s Trial. V Thr Voltaic Belt Co., Marshall, IVJicb., will send Dr. Dye’s Celebrated Electro-Voltaic Belts and Elec tric Appliancea on trial for thirty d&ys to men (young or old) who are afflicted with nervous debility, lost vitality aud kindred troubles, guar anteeing speedy aud complete restoration of health and manly vigor. Address as above.— N. B. —So risk is incurred, as thirty days trial is allowed.' / * *—— , The Way They Do in Blakely. Under the above bead, the Columbus Enquirer gets off the following on one of our popular young men, but left off “Ex cuse brevity,” as the P. S., and thus some what modified it: The young gentlemen of Blakely are evidently of the opinion that “brevity is the soul of wit.” One of our charming Columbus girls was recently on a visit to that progressive little city, and one of the young gentlemen, desiring to carry her out to an evening entertainment, penned the following: Blakely, Ga., Nov. 23, 1883. Miss : Can I, in the language of my deceased but never to be forgotten friend, Mr Rich ard Swiveler, late of “Curiosity Shop,” after the diurnal luminary has passed be hind the western horizon, have and obtain the exquisite pleasure and beatitude of es corting or transferring your corporeal sys tem across the space intervening between the domicile of your friend, Miss Leila, and that of Mr- Joiner, where there is, or will be, a saccharine entertainment of the sweetest?
