VOLUME LXII !■ NO. 48 JUDGE EVE IS IN RACE FOR_CONGRESS Well Known Tift County Jurist Is Put in Race by Friends. TIFTON, Ga.—At a mass meeting of the people of Tift county held in the auditorium of the Tift county court house at the noon recess of Tift superior court Wednesday of last week, Hon. Raleigh Eve, presid ing judge of the Tifton judicial cir cuit, was formally put in nomination as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Congress from the Second congressional district to suc ceed Hon. Frank Park. The auditor ium was packed and enthusiasm marked the reception of five or six speeches preceding the formal nomi nation. The nomination was unani mous. A committee of five was named to notify Judge Eve of the action tak en and these later escorted him into the court room, where he was re ceived with another outburst of ap plause. Judge Eve thanked the meet ing for the honor of the nomination and said it would be his pleasure to seek the Democratic nomination for Congress from the Second district should the people of the district desire that he become a candidate. Judge Eve has been a citizen of Tifton since his early youth. Here he studied law, was admitted to the bar and from here volunteered for service in the Spanish-American war. He has served as judge of the Tif ton judicial circuit since this circuit was founded with an ability that has attracted more than state-wide attention. His charges to the grand juries of his circuit have been mark ed by a breadth of thought and grasp of public questions that mark him as .most desirable congression al timber. ALBANY, Ga—Setting up county wide organizations and locals ia every county where the Peanut As sociation has as many as ten mem bers is now in progress under the direction of the field service depart ment, which is headed by John H. Mock. Actual setting-up work is in charge of J. B. Law ley, who has had wide experience in this work with the Cotton Association and the Tobacco Association in North Caro lina. The program got actively under way Saturday with two big meetings at Bainbridge and Donalscnville, where the members in Decatur and Seminole counties set up their or ganizations, and arranged for later meetings at which district locals will be formed in different parts of those counties. This week, four additional meet ings will be held by Mr. Lawley at Grady, Early, Calhoun and Clay counties. These meetings will be held at Cairo Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock; Blakely, Thursday af ternoon at 3 o’clock; Edison, Friday morning at 10 o’clock; Fort Gaines, Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock. At Bainbridge last Saturday morn ing the grower members in Decatur county elected H. P. Townsend, of Climax, Chairman; O. C. Dukes, of Faceville, vice-chairman; and V. O. Long, of Bainbridge, Route A, Secre tary. They also designated Vada, Parker’s Schoolhouse, Climax, Face ville, Eldorendo, Brinson, Pine Hill Schoolhouse at Strickland and Ken dricks as places for locals. Seminole county growers at Don alsonville Saturday afternoon elected J. F. Brown of Donalsonville, chair man; W. W. Gibson, of Donalson ville, R. F. D., and G. Boih of these meetings were well attended and the members showed . much enthusiasm for the Peanut As sociation, as well as determination to . “co-operate to make peanuts pay.” Rules of the Association provide that . no local can have more than fifty members or less than ten, and repre sentatives of some of the communi . ties at Saturday’s meetings went home determined to sign enough con tracts in their respective localities to be entitled to a local. Many oth ers also took contracts home with them and agreed to sign neighbors. These county-wide organizations and locals will be formed in every peanut county of the State, and are expected to be fine community cen ters, and of great help to the grow er members, as well as to their as sociation. STATE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS ASKING FOR INCREASED FUNDS House and Senate Committees to Act on Requests for Increases. ATLANTA, Ga., July 17.—With pe titions before them from state edu cational institutions asking for in creases in appropriations amounting to $368,000, the House and Senate committees on appropriations were scheduled to hold another joint ses sion late today. Georgia Tech at present is re ceiving $125,000 anuually. Former Governor Nat E. Harris and Dr. M'. L. Brittain, president of the institution, are leaders in an ef fort to obtain $175,000. Chancellor David C. Barrow, of the University of Georgia, is asking that the ap propriation for his institution be in creased from $85,000 to $150,000. The State Normal College, Athens, re quests an advance from $63,000 to SBO,OOO. Smaller educatonal institutions at Dalton, Savannah, Albany, Valdosta are also asking for increased ap propriations, while Miss Rhoda Kauf man, executive secretary of the Georgia Welfare Board, has record ed an appeal for an increase of $15,- 000 for the work of her department.
