Second Annual Exhibition at
the Whittier Colored School.—
Through the courtesy of Miss Lizzie
Parsons, Instructress of the Insti
tute, we were invited to be present
at the exercises which took place
last Tuesday evening.
Tbe academy build'ns, quaint and
sombre in exterior appearance, is
within spacious, neat and comfortable.
Wreathes of cedar and flowers adorned
the white walls and hung in beautiful
festoons over the newly < reeled siage.
The scholars W6re all dressed tidily,
and (he girls Were decked with rose*
and ribbons, and the bappv faces of
al' added to the general eff ct» The
must marked feature was the perfect
order and system which seemed to
pervade the school, reflecting much
credit on tbe ability and efficiency of
the teacher.
The performance consisted of dia
logues, speeches and songs. They
were well rendered, and many were
entertaining and amusing. The vesper
hymn, sung by the whole school with
bauds closed and beads bowed, was
both solemn and impressive. The
Washing Song Was laughable and
appropriate.. The Moot ■Court with
the grave jtn.ge, shrew i attorneys,
sheriff, prisoner aud jurors, was a
highly entertaining burlesque on ll-at
dignified tribunal. The prisoner whs
was sentenced to ten years iu the pen
itentiary for the murder ol a. white
hen. We regretted that We had not
attended the examination, as We would
Lke to say som-ihing in regard to
th.-ir thoroughnet>s and proficiency in
their studies.
After the close of the exercises, by
request of Miss Parsons, the following
gentlemen addressed th« school : Col,
W, O. Fleming, in a chaste, able and
instructive manner; Cap?. D. A. Rus
sell was earnest, advising and cotnpli-

May< r Jones made a few remark-
congratulatory on the creditable man
ner in wlidi all acquitted themselves.
Thus ended a very pleasant and

A Brutal Murder— A Man Shot
Dead at the FupVer Table— Of
ficial Incompktf.ncy allows Thu
Murderer to Escape.—Last Saturday
night, about ten miles west of this city,
a dreadful murder was committed, the
very thought of which chills the blood.
John Carter, a desperado, who it is
said has slain three men, killed a Mr.
Dickens While Sitting at his (Carter's)
supper-table.
The neWs reached toWO oh Sunday
morning last, and the Sheriff and Cor
oner repaired to the scene where an
inqnest Was held and the following
facts elicited. Dickens was the gnest
of Carter; both were more or less in
toxicated; while at supper some angry
worthTpreVailed, and Dickens called
Carter a d—n son of a b—b. Carter
then swure he would kill Dickens, and
with that intention arose from the ta
ble and went to get hiu gun, leaving
Dickens at the table. Carter soon re
turned, gun in hand, and said to Dick
ens, "damn you, I am joing to kill
you; wbat do you think of it!” Dick*
ens answered, “shoot away” Carter
fired, killing Dickens instantly. The
jury rendered a verdict in accordance
wiin the facts stated.
Of course it was expected that the
murderer would be arrested and
brought to trial; but no, Sber.ff Wangh
took bo action wbatever in the matter,
whether through ignorance as to his
duty, tyilfnl malt-yecutiqn,pr pow»rilire,
We are notprepared to -ay,
The mufderey was on lift ground An
a state of intoxication, and oould have
offered no resistance. Shenfl »VRngb,
depths has Radicalism plunged tbe
law-loving people of Decatur county !
Wbat safety have we in tbe law, wheh
a man is allowed to deliberately take
another’s life, and l*e given a carte
blanche by the Sheriff ?
But the tale is not half fold. On
Monday Ja posse went ont to arrest
this Carter—this fiend .whose bands
had been ihrio^dyed in the blood of
his fellow men—“-and found him at bis
Wouse. He was apparently in a dying
•ood iiion, having, it was said, swal
lowed an enormous quantity of lauda
num and a teaspoonful (?) of strych
nine. He promised the Sheriff, how
ever, that he would come .to town
when he got able. Upon that paltry
promise, with no oibt-r surety for his
appearance, this monstrous man was al
lowed to remain at liberty. As we
shall show presently, Carter had uk*-n
no poison at all,_lut had consummate
ly "pulled the wool” over the' Sher
iff’s already too obsenre viston.
On Tuesday' u.otning the Sheriff
and posse again repaired to the scene,
but upon enquiring for the murderer,
John Carter—the gentleman was no
where to be found, -having left his
premises that morning at day^break.
So we will hear of him no more un
less it. connection'with another atro
cious crime.
The above shows the people of De
catur county that they are without the
pale of the law*—that the Iligh-Sher-
iff is either a blundering fool, or a
miserable coward. It illustrates to
them the consequences of their allow
ing Radicalism to run rough-shod over
our county; and that they are alone
responsible fo' it.
Will our people allow this much
longer. Are they aware that tbe white
element in our population is equally
as great, tf not greater, than the black!
Such is the ca.-e, and a little energy-
on the ]wrt of the good white people,
will seed Radicalism howling to the
infernal regions—its appropriate and
lawful dwelling place—next Novem*
her. Let us see to it.
Sheriff Wangh, by bis action in tbt*

Bronchits.
This is an irritation or inflamation of the bron
chial tubes, which carry the air-we breathe into the
lungs. It arises from a cold settled in the throat,
from Catarrh extending to’ these parts, from scrofu-
loue affections, and from sever use of the voice.
The irritation from this latter cause commences in
this larynx and gotts, which are the organs of (he
voice, and extending downwards, produces ho*rs-
ness, coughing and spitting mucous matter, some
times mixed with blood. It is chiefly dangerous
from its tendency to spread into the lungs, and ter
minate iu consumption. It is in the cure of severe
and obstinate cases of this disease that Dr. Pierce’s
Golden Medical Discovery has achieved unparallel
ed success, and won thw loudest praise from all who
have use*' it. It is sold by all respectable druggists.
THe Harvest off the Head.—.When the
comb sets as a rake, bringing away a roll of parted
libers every time it passes through the hair, bald
ness won)d soon be inevitable. But even iu . this
case forlorn fcs it may seem,' the mischief can be ar
rested, the loss repaired, Lyon’s Kathairon, aided
by a brisk application of the brush to promofto the
absorption of the fluidjby the scalp, will stop the

roots from which th« dead filaments were shed will

work of reproduction will go on until the damage is
completely repaired, and the luxuaiaut crop
hair thus produced will never wither or fall out as
long as the vitalizing application is regularly con
