The Battle Field,
Stop cosier, Mend, and light be your tread.
For that monnd where you stand is the
conch of the dead,
And that field to yonr right, now waving hid
' r green.
Was in the war's earnings a far deadlier
scene.
I was once here before, 'twas one morning in
1 May,
And the dark clouds of night just fading
away,
.And 'twas here and there only across the
black sky,
The last sign of light any one could descry.
The enemy were near and we knew that that
morn
The battle would begin with first sight of
dawn;
So each one of us made himself ready and lay
With his hand on his trigger 'til the first
light of day.
Our men here were few; old men and young
Were here, and they only had to cope with
. the strong,
, But the heart of each man as he waited was
. high
Fixed on this one purpose, ‘conquer or die.’
ho soon as we could see the first bayonet
shine,
And the least sign of life on the long rolling
line, ,
Our oannons belched forth with their mad
dening roar,
—Afididen swept the earth from behind and
before.
For four hours that morning' we. were here
* fighting well, i * i . • ;
And hundreds of brave men in this one bat?
tie fell.
But at last their lines wavered and turning
theyfled, . .
Leaving on the field their wounded and
• dead.
« .
Now look St the place, there is nothing here
, plain { • . . . . , . i
Enough to speak of that battle' and the men
that were slain.
Both are now placed among the things of
the past,
When the men are forgotten and their acts
do not last J. L. O.

pure, and the health of the system will follow.
Gratefkil thousands proclaim Vinkgak Bit-
tkrs the most wonderful Invigorant that ever sustained
the sinking system.
Pin, Tape, and other Worms, lurking i a
the system of so many thousands, are effectually de
stroyed and removed. Says a distinguished physiol*
ogist: There is scarcely an individual upon the face ofthe
earth whose b«xly is exempt from the presence of worms.
It is not upon the healthy elements of the body that
worms exist, but upon the diseased humors and slimy
deposits that breed these living monsters of disease.
No system of Medicine, no vermifuges, no anlhelmin-
itics, will free the system from worms like these Bit

Bfecnanical Diseases. Persons engaged in
Paints and Minerals, such as Plumbers, Type-setters,
Gold-beaters, and Miners, as they advance in life, will
be subiect to paralysis of the Bowels. To guard against
this take a dose of Walker's Vinegar Bitters once
or twice a week, as a Preventive.
Bilious, Remittent, anil Intermittent
Fevers, which are so prevalent in the valleys of our
great rivers throughout the United States, especially
those of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Ten
nessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Red, Colorado, Brazos,
Rio Grande, Pearl, Alabama, Mobile. Savannah, Roan
oke, James, and many others, with their vast tributa
ries, throughout our entire country during the Summer
and Autumn, and remarkably so during seasons of
unusual heat and dryness, are invariably accompanied
by extensive derangements of the stomach and liver, and
other abdominal viscera. There are always more or lew
obstructions of the liver, a weakness and irritable state
of the stomach, and great torpor of the bowels, being
clogged up with vitiated accumulations. In their treat
ment, a purgative, exerting a powerful influence upon
these various organs, is essentially necessary. There is
no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr. J- Walkek's
Vinegar Bitters, as they will speedily remove the
dark-colored viscid matter with which the bowel* are
loaded, at the same time stimulating the secretion* of
the liver, and generally restoring the healthy function*
of the digestive organs.
Scroftiln, or King’s Evil, White Swelling*,

.Inflammations, Indolent luff animations. Mercurial Af

etc., etc. In tj^ese, as m all other constitutional Div
eases, Walker’s Vinegar Bitters have shown their
great curative powers in the most obstinate and intract
able crises.
Dr. Walker’s CalirornlaTliiegar Blfterf
act on all these cases in a similar manner. By purifying
the Blood they remove the cause, and byresolving away
the effects of the inflammation (the tubercular depotitil
the affected parts receive health, and a permanent cure
is effected.
The properties of Dr. Walker’s Vikegai
Bitters are Aperient. Diaphoretic and Carminative,
Nutritious, Laxative, Diuretic, Sedative, Counter-Irri

Dr. Walker’s Vinegar Bitters are the best safe

their balsamic, healing, and soothing properties protect
the humors of the faucet* Their Sedative properties
allay pain in the nervous system, stomach, and bowels,
either from inflammation, wind, colic, cramps, etc.
Their Counter-Irritant influence extends throughout
the system. Their Diuretic properties act on the Kid*

Anti-Bilious properties stimulate the liver, in the secre

and are superior to all remecSal agents, for the cure of
