Guano —Great numbers of wagons have passed through our town the last week, on their way to Whites burg, for fertilizers. Pcnr.ic Wells.— The contract tor fixing up the public wells, was let out some tro or three weeks ago, to Mr. Hazle, arid he is now busy putting up the curbs, Ac. Whitesiiurg. — lt. J. Also to the change of schedule of the Hack Line, to corres pond with the above. &£T The American Newspauer Re porter says the chap who could do all the business he wanted without adver tising, has come to it at last. lie has anew advertisement in the Fuddle town Clod breaker, but kt is headed.— “Sheriff Sale tor April." As reliable and trustworthy, they can be depended upon to attend to your law business for yon. HtST We have failed for the last three or tour weeks, to get the Sun day’s edition of the Atlanta Daily Herald. If this is the fault of the “ talented mailing clerk,” of the Herald, we hope he will correct it, as we are anxious to see that large eight page daily, which is said to be one of the wonders of that stirring paper. Personal. —We had the pleasure of meeting in our town on last Satur day Mr. Howard Park, the gentle manly agent of the Atlanta llerald. The Herald although anew paper havs >«g been published but a few months, has leaped to the front rank of Geors gia journalism, and enjoys an enviable re putation for its independence,- enter prise and ability. Prank S. Loftin Esq., a talented young member of the bar at Franklin, v, asin onr town on yesterday on busi ness. Judge Shelnntt and Dr. Hood of H nvdon, were in town on last Wednes % They were both in excellent health, judging from their robustious looks. Improvement. —At no time since tbe establishment ot the Times in Can oil ton, has there been so much improvment going on as at present. On every side and every street, we sec new buildings going up. Our town is crowded with mechanics, but we be lieve they are all kept busy. The sound of the hammer, plane and saw is the order of the clay. Everybody is making ready to welcome the iron horse, whose entrance is expected here this All is life and en ergy and our town already presents the appearence ot a railroad town. Feople from eve»*y section of the State are constantly here prospecting, and altogether the future is promising for Carrollton to become a considerable city. Habeas Corpus. —An interesting habeas corpus cast* ca ue before the Ordinary on last Monday, the petiton er being Kitty Rogers colored, vs. John Dukes also colored, for the re covery of hei child, in the possession of said Dukes. The evidence in the case, showed, that some two years ago while Kitty Rogers was unable to take care ot her children, having sev eral, and they all small, she verbally contracted with John Dukes to take her oldest boy, then nine years of age until he was twenty one. The case was argued at considerable length by Oscar Reese and J. J. Julian for petitioner, and Chandler A Cobb, and Col. S, W Harris, for respondent. Judge Julian gave decision in favor of Dukes, respondent. Woksing the Streets. —-Our Mar shal informs us, that there will be a general street working next week, commencing Monday morning. All parties, liable to road duty, living within the incorporation, are requested to prepare for action on that occasion, or come forward and pony ivp their V. In connection with the above, we would state that under the last act of the Legislature, upon the subject, no body is exempted between the ages of sixteen and tidy, except licensed min islers of the gospel. Among the many new dwel lings now going up in Carrollton, none in our opinion, will be more tasty, when finished, than that of Mr. E. W. Wells on Newnan street, nearly oppo site the Livery Stable. This building is upon, tlie Gothic cottage stele, which is now becoming very popular everywhere, and will when completed have eight rooms. Messrs. Barnes and Beavers, two of our most popu lar mechanics, are the contractors, and trom their well known reputation as master mechanics, we shall expect to see a nice job when they get through with it Bought. —Two of the gentlemen from Meriwether county, Messrs. Head and Dekaperriciv, here the ( ast week prospecting, bought the corner lot, just below Summerlin’s grocery building, inch ding one acre of ground, in the rear of it, from Mr. John Roda ban, giving him SSOO. These gentle men, we understand, .are men of means, and it is their intention, we learn, to build a grocery house and a huge warehouse upon the lot purchased, and also at sometime not far in the fu ture, to open a banking business here. We take pleasure in welcoming such men of means and enterprise to our town. From the Cincinntt.i Weekly Time?. Georgia Letter. Carrollton, Ga., February 13. In a former communication I gave your readers an account of railroads and other public enterprises in this county. In this I propose giving an account of the health, climate, society, etc. Asa general thing this county is remarkable for its healthful ness. I suppose- that Carroll county can pro duce some cases of as great longevity as any county in Georgia, or, perhaps, in the United States. In proof of this I will instance some cases. Col. Win. Barton died in this county about two m mths ago at the advanced age of one hundred and fourteen years, hav ing resided in this county for the last forty years of his life. lie was a captain in the Revolutionary War and a eolonel in the war of 1812. But the most remarkable feature in his case is that he was never married, but lived entirely alone. For many years before the late war he drew a pension from the Goverment, which afforded him a living. But during and since the war he received nothing from the Government, and had to rely solely upon the charity of the people, for a subsistanee, and, finally, died a pauper. Mr. John Chapman, of this county, nearly one hundred years old, is ac tive, rational and enjoys fine health, and is capable of transacting any bu siness that comes before him. There are a great many others ranging in age from eighty to one hundred years. But the most remark* able character is Mr. Ben. P. William son, of this county, who is now about e ight.y-two years old. The greatest weight he ever attained in his life was ninety -two pouuds. lie has raised a large family of boys, all of them large, stalwart, robust men. He not unfres qncntly walks ten miles to church ; can out-run, out jump, and out-dance either one of his boys ; and, last of all, has not drank a drop of water in sixty years, but does not object to wetting himself with coffee or milk occasionally. Another rare case is one Mr. Green B. Hammock, who has worn neither hat, coat, nor shoes for twenty or twenty five years.. He is possessed of a sound mind, is capable of attending to any business, but his peculiarities forbid him leaving his own premises. He raises his own corn and meat, and stays at home and eats it. He is now between seventy and eighty years ol age. Such a specimen of humanity as the last mentioned ease does not speak very highly for the society ot this county, but it must be remembered that hi- is ui Lelaiion. As a <:r - il tiling tin* societv is go* and. i" 1»*■ citizens are honest, peace-loving, a:i 1 industrious, uiio eat bread by the sweat of their brow. The present winter has been tin most severe known to the oldest citi zens of the county, and lias caused more than the usual amount of sick ness among tire people. The horse disease has done its work here, and there now appears to be a sim ilar epidemic among tne people. There are several eases of small pox reported near this place, but by prop er vigilance and care the disease can soon be subdued,. It has proved fatal but in one case. In conclusion, I would say that our arms and hearts are still open to wel come any and alljndustrious and enter, prising men that may wish to come to Carrollton. F. A. R. Lookout for the X Mark. Subscribers will be notified when their time expires, by a X mark oppo site their names. We should of course be glad to have all renew, but as we have to pay the cash for everything we use in the printing office, we can not afford to send the paper, without the money in advance, according to our terms. If any should fail to re ceieve the paper after notification, wx hopethey will not be offended, as we do not drop their names because we are afraid to trust them, but because we cannot afford to do business on the credit system. “Fain Kileek.” —There can be no necessity, late day for the press to speak in commendatory terms of this remarkable medicine in order to promote its sale ; for it is a medicine that is known and appreciated the wide world through. Whenever we speak of the Pain-Killer, as in the present instance, we do so in the be half of the afflicted, rather than with the view of advancing the interests of its proprietors. For various diseases such as rheumatism, cholera,, cholera morbus, burns, sprains, bruises, and so on to the end of the catalogue, we are convinced that there is no lemedy equal to Davis’ Vegetable ‘ £ Fain Killer,” and we know that thousands upon thousands entertain the same belief. Certainly we cannot refer to the history of any medicine which equals that of the Fain Killer. It was introduced in 1840, and from that time to this its sale, both at home and abroad, lias constantly and rap idly increased, and we rejoice at the high reputation it has achieved, be cause this reputation shows that it has been the means of relieving a vast amount of human suffering. We hope the present proprietors of Davis’ Vegetable “Fain Killer” will long live to enjoy the prosperity they have so fairly won Torpidity. — Torpidity of the liver is a great source of disease. Stimu lants and pleasant drinks may stave off for a while sickness, but so long as the liver remains inactive, disease will remain. In such cases Dr. William Brazier’s Liver Medicine will be found a soveregn Sjtecific. This great South Carolina remedy has been used for twenty years for diseases of the liver with unvarying success. READ TIIE EVIDENCE. Rozelle & Cos., at O. K. Landing Mississippi river, state their customers are highly delighted with the specific effect of Dr. Win. Brazier’s Liver Medicine. They claim this remedy has fully answered all the purposes of blue mass, calomel, and other altera tives, by its prompt action on the Liver, regulating the flow of bile, at.d neutralizing miasmatic influence.— Chills and fever, jaundice, torpid liv er, and all those diseases originating from miasma, are promptly cured by the use of this great liver medicine. They further state their sales are euor mous and constantly increasing. W ithout a Pakalel.— The de mand for Dr. J. Brad field's Female Regulator is beyond precedent in the annals of popular remedies. Orders come in so thick and fast that the Proprietor has, heretofore, been una ble to fill them all. He is happy to state that arrangements are now com plete bv which he is prepared to man ufacturer Female Regulator on a scale equal to the emergency, and the public may feel assured that their wants may now be supplied. Physi cians, of high repute are using tnis great remedy, in daily practice, all over Georgia. Hereafter no woman need suffer from suppressed, suspen ded or irregular menstruation. This valuable medicine is prepared by L. 11. Brad field, Druggist, Atlanta, Ga.. and so'd at $1,53 per bottle, by res pectable druggists throughout Amer ica.
