Ijyjni and Comity News. I [ t is with feelings of the most pro* I , lH i regret that we announce the 1 , ." l ‘ t ] l 0 f this distinguished citizen of II county, which occurred at his r ilie at Villa Ilica on the 13th mst. I, q tJje time of his death, had L, confined to his room but a few l vs? though he had been in feeble leJth for some time. Since the r; ith () f Mr. Candler, we also learn I , C. is very low and it is not I * pec ted that she will live. I Our acquantauce with Mr. Candler ia ...cher limited but our impression I was \aw* . | iroin what we had seen of him, was, liiiit he was a man of more than ordh I, vv abilities. Intellectually, we find to be, among those I ho ki.e' v him beat, that lie had no Cuvenov in the county, lie was un t.-obtedlv a man of great native abil jjoinbined with considerable cuh |t ~-e, and in his death the county has Lostained a great loss. I \Ve will not attempt here to give a history of Col. Candler s public servh L „or a sketch of his, private life, hfe will leave this sad task to some L o s his many friends, who were letter acquainted with him than we L Suffice it to say, that as a public Liu, he was well known throughout Lis section of the State, as he repres L n ted this county in the Legislature [cpeatedly before the war with lion- Lto his constituency, as well as him- Keif. I (ol Candler was at the time of his ■it'.ith about sixty-five years of age. He Ituvcs behind a large and interesting ■nttiily of children, the most of them n a ,r e we believe. Senator M. C. ■’ .ridlerof Atlanta is his eldest son. A Terrific Wind. I On last Sunday night at about 9 ft clock this place' w«3 visited by a ftstonn of wind almost equal to the one ■we bad here the first of last summer. ■Old Boreas or the ‘-Stonn King,” as ■he newspapers all over the country lv, ill now be calling him, was on a reg ■ilar bender, and a pretty big one at ■that As we have said before the storm ■,ii!sed over this place at about 9 ■ 'dock, and lasted we suppose about ■hree quarters of an hour. It was ac Hbm/anied with slight rain and hail. ■Hit damage done here, will amount ■to liothimi serious, so lar as we can Bearn, the worse being the blowing Blown of the frames of several dwell ings that were in course ot construe- I: >n. A uoug these was that of T. W. ■larnes just back ot Dr. Fitts, of W. Clontz in the western part ol town, Kid the frame of a tenement house out Bi the neighborhood of Mr. Joe Ben ■a, belonging to Messrs My rack «fc ■ arson, and perhaps others we have H, t heard of. From every section of But- county that we have had any news, Id >ve have heard Irom several points, ■ - stor.u seems to have been as bad ■ it was at this place, a great deal ot ■ruling and limber being destroyed ■ iiimgiiout the country Tiie most ■rions loss that we have heard of in ftitie country, was the destruction of ■in house of Mr. Jesse Crutchfield, I'ome two miles north of here. Three ■thousand pounds of fodder that was I the house, was blown away, and a pin and wheat thresher completely Iwieckt-d, We have heard of a good many ■Busing incidents, connected with the ptorni, for which we have not space pere. We are" told that a couple of iur gaytst, most fascinating and fest pe young men were down in the 11th Piatt ict, in this county, on Sunday, ■'quirking ’ and that on their return pun lay night, they were caught by fti>e storm, in the neighborhood of ■Judge Bonners. The Judge, with put hospitality, characteristic of him, p a gentleman of the old school, kind ly” took them in out of the wet” and paile them stay with hitu, all night, peating them in the most generous pd munificent style. The young men pel very grateful for the kindness p°w:; them, and will not soon forget p c hospitality of Judge Bonner upon | : bat occasion. k Hotel —Captain Myrack since charge of the Hotel has Woughly renovated things. Ho refurnished the entire establish ment with new furniture, putting to ta °h bed-room, two beds, a bureau, etc. It is the intention ol W'tain M. to run the Hotel in lirst 1 style, and from his well known as a business man we know e "ill do it. G> Farmers.—Messrs. Bass & Cur 1,5 inform us that they are now pre- to buy cotton and invite the a>| ners who have cotton for sale, to e them a t ali bef/ie sil iug. We suppose it 1 was on account of the storm ot SunG day night. We tailed to get the Atlanta pa pers on yesterday Iroin some cause or other. Under the new schedule, un der which the Atlanta <fc West Point Railroad is running, they are a day old when'they come at the regulars time. j Last Wednesday and Wednesday night was the coldest we have had! this season. It was a regular hogj killing time. Business has been pretty well frozen out the past week by the cold weath-J er. J Mr. Kramer was seen at the] Po t Office on last Monday for the! first time since he has been a citizen of this place. Mr. K. believes lfl* sticking to business and is hardly ever 1 seen outside of his store. Savannah Griffin & North Alabama Ra ilroad, The editor of the Griffin News late ly made a trip over the above Road to Newnan and has the following to say about it: The Savannah, Griffin & North Alabama Railroad is in splendid con dition, and reflects great credit upon its management. It is doing a very heavy business, and will as we are in formed, necessitate the putting on of another train at an early day. Long trains heavily laden go out and return each day, and the prospects of the road are very flattering. Capt. Chars lie White has gone up to take charge of the “Carrollton depot,” the present terminus of the road, and it is expect ed that the iron will be received by the first of December, and the track laid to Carrollton very soon thereafter when the business will be largely in creased. DAVE CROFT. While John Drake has been acting as agent st the Carrollton depot, Dave Croft has charge of the train. A more efficient employee, or one more devoted to the interests of the road we never saw, as he gives them his undivided attention. Capt. White President of the Macon & Western Rail Road, had Mr. Croft in the ser vice of that enterprise, and being one of the best judges of human nature lfnew his capacity tor and fidelity to trusts reposed. Our new road is the pet of the city, and our people certain ly have cause for congratulation upon its admirably management, and its splendid business prospects. ftoto from “R. J. He requests me to say that he is also a candidate for matri mony, and can be addressed upon that all important subject, at the above mentioned place. Summerlin, member of the Legislature from Heard county was pretty badly cut up, iu a difficulty with a tenant of his, last weak. We were glad to hear yesterday from Dr. Fitts, of this place, that the wounds are not considered dangerous. Our mothers, who were the best and tidiest housewives in the world— excepting our grandmothers !—took especial pride in the possession of rows ot tin ware that glistened like a polished mirror. Every article about their houses susceptible of polish, in cluding the brass knocker, was regu larly brightened up until it fairly glist ened. With their primitive materials, such as Bath brick, emery, rotten stone, etc., it was a serious labor, al beit one of love. Now-a days, how ever, their daughters use Sapolio, and in one hour can polish more articles and do it better than they could in a whole day. If you wish to excel your mothers in tho brightness of your kitchen ware use Sapolio. If a man wants a bottle of whiskey let him buy it and take him home like a man, and not sneak home with a bottle of “Bitters, ’ or ‘Cordial,’ and pielend that it is medicine. If he wants a tonic that is something better than a temporary stimulant, he should get a bottle of Peruvian Syrup, (an iron Tonic,) that will vitalize the blood and give durable strength to the sys tem.
