\V»* arc surprised to learn that cli 171 -
rubies exist in the miiuls of some of
our people as to w hether they can eon"
tcieneioM-Iy take the oath required in
trie Sup'** DMfi y B li lor fi-ii uraliou.
Some think that becaust they were in
tin C itifcderate service they are, then
- disfranchised; some think they
are dislraiichi.-' and because of having
given aid and support to the Confeder
ate cause or aided and .supported those
who were in the Confederate army.
There ought to he no d< übt. under
the law. as to these classes. Both are
entitled to register and vote, unless, in
a Idi i in to having served in the army,
they had previously held a Federal of
flee, or a legislative, judieial or execu
tive office, under me State govern
ment.
Although a man may have held a
civil office before the war wnieh
required him to take an oath to support
the Constitution ot the United States,
he is not thereby disfranchised for
making voluntary contributions to in"
(livi luuls who were in ihe Confederate
aiuiy. A man may have been a Jus
tice of the Inferior Court bifore the
war. and during the struggle may have
voluntarily contributed to the suporl ol
soldiers’ families, or have in. de dona
lions to soldiers in the field, still it his
aid ot the Confederate cause went nu
further he is not disfranchised.
Two things must exist in connection
with the same individual; —he must
have taken the cath to support the
G verninent of the United Stales, as an
officer before described, and ulso given
aid and comfort to the Confederate
Government in order to disqualify hun
from registering.
Ail the true friends of the State who
can, must register. A failure to regis
ter is equivalent to a vote for the Radi
cal party. We" know a great mam
who are averse to registering who would
he grossly insulted if it was barely
insinuated that they were in favor of
the Radical party, vet by failing to
register they are just as surely and
effectually supporting the Radicals as
they cor.id do by voting with them.
We hope that this class ol our friends
will reflect upon litis point.— Chronicle
ty Sentinel.
