Prosperity of Cartersville.—
W'hat has become of that long train of
wagons that have heretofore crowded
our streets, from Ceuar Valley, laden
t with produce to sell and barter to the
merchants and other people of this
market ?
1 The above question we heard asked
publicly upon the streets of our grow
ing and thriving town, a few days since,
bv cue v/ho we know to be a warm
fiiend of the place. The reply was
they have been turned in another di
rection and to a different market.—
Why ? Because another market is of
fering to pay from fifteen to twenty
cents more per bushel for wheat than
the merchants of Cartersville are giv
ing. Is this true, or is it not? If
true why is i; so? 111 other words, if
Riune, or any other adjacent market,
fan pay two dollars a bushel lor wheat
whv can’t Cartersville uo the same ?
Have not our merchants got as much
money, as liberal hearts, and as great a
desire for trade as the merchants of o
ther placts, or do they want to make
bigger profits ? These are questions
that should be looked after and enqui
red into. If true the evil ought to be
remedied, and il ialse people ought »rj
know it. If it is true that Cartersville
is not as good a market as some of her
neighbors, the producers ol toe land is
sure to fill** it out though the contrary
may be asserted. A large proportion
of mankind will always trade with
those who will make it to their interest
to do so. be the advantage everso si igbt.
They will travel greater distances, and
over rougher loads, and endure hard
ships and exposures just to get a few
cents more in a bushel of wheat or a
bi le of cotton, and where they sell their
produce they are sure to buy their
goods and groceries.
W want To induce all the trade we
can in this direction. We want to
buildup Cartersville and make it se
cond to no market in Upper Georgia,
in i iu order to do this we must e.-t.ib
-11 sll something like uniform pi ices for
everything we buy or sell, and not
have one merchant selling goods fiity
or a hundred per cent Higher or lower
than another, causing purchasers to
nm al! over town and try every house
to ;;.-certain wiere [ic can buy the best
bargains. Not lake the advantage ol
the scarcity of ail indispensable article
and pop it up to an exhorbitant price
r.mi compel purchasers to pay it. This
conveys the idea that that merchant is
only alter money—that he is not at ali
interested in the growth and welfare of
the town or the prosperity of the peo
ple and country We should be liber
al in our dealing? with producers pay
them fair prices lor their produce, ami
sell them goods likewise. ShoWthekn,
iu other words, that our motto is “to
live and let live.”
We drop these hints for what they
are worth, hoping that we have given
nflVrrse to no man. but that they may
lead to the correction of fa be •impres
sions, if any, and to the rectifying of
wrongs if any hrive been enumerated,
or exists.

longer as we are permitted to live and

clothing, hats, boots, shoes, etc., etc,,
to the citizens of Cartersville and sur
rounding country, as we have within
the last few weeks, to sav nothing of
the last twelve months. We feaT no
competition from any quarter, as we
know we can seil as good goods, as
fashionable goods, and sell them as
cheap trs any southern merchant can
afford to do, and if anybody don’t be
lieve it all we ask in proof of its truth

Bae Behavior at Church. —lfthere
is any true, established and defined
standard drawn in society by which
the moral terpitude of an action is to
be determined, the above must be one
of the highest grade. Misbehavior -at
or in church, especially in time of res
ligious worship, should be held, as it
rs, iu utter execration by all right think
ing and law-abiding people. Nothing
is more disgraceful to a community nor
more degrading to individuals than a
disregard of the House of God and dis
respect to its institutions and worship.
Wherever and whenever it is manifest
ed, either upon the part of children or
adults, it is taken a3 an evidence of the
want of proper training and educ thon.
No lady or gentleman, in this day of
enlightened Christianity, who has any
pride of character or respect for parent
al instructions, will risk his or her rep
utation by committing such a breach
of good manners coolly and deliberate
ly . And much of bad behaviour and
disrespect exhibited by children at an
early age of life, is the result of indis
cretion on the part of parents, in too
freely and openly expressing opinions
derogatory to the character of churches
holding to views different from theirs.
Our mind has been directed to this sub
ject from what has transpired in our
very midst within the last few weeks.
Whispering, laughing, and running in
and out of etinreh during worship.—
We hope that our citizens generally
will, in future, pay marked attention to
all such characters, and if they be chil
dren report them to their parents, and
if adults frown down such conduct, and
if persisted in expose them publicly.—
We hope and believe, however, that all
this will be avoided, as we do not think
we have any people among us who is
witling to stand out against popular o
pinion. We hope not, at least.

pretty goods—fashionable goods—and
goods in any reasonable quantity —and,
above all, if you want to buy them dirt
cheap, catl in and see us.” No one
has yet taken the wind out of our sail?
by selling more goods, better goods, or
cheaper goods, nor neither do we intend
they shall. Therelore we say come
one and come all, examine our goods
and prices and we have r.o fears about
the sale of them.
