*®rOartcrsville has now 40 odd
business houses, and several more go
il,ii u p» while her rural borders are
being greatly extended. The mark of
improvement is visible in every direc
tion.
ihe American Hotel, is a name
charming to the weary, wayworn trav
eler—especially the one in Atlanta.—
Here he is fed and sheltered in the
most hospitable manner, as cheap as
they can possibly afford it. Wiley <fc
Browning, the clerks, can entertain
any one with their kindness and gen~
tlernanly treatment. Messrs. White <s
- proprietors, are all that the
most fastidious can ask. Good beds,
groaning tables, and kind treatment is
the portion of those who stop at this
most excellent house.
Attention is invited to the adver
tisement of Mr. T. M. COMPTON, of
this place, who is anxious to dispose of
the Dry Goods department of his busi
ness, as he is anxious to deal exclu
sively in Groceiies & Confectioneries.
He is offering to sail off at greatly
reduced prices. He has just received
a line lot of oranges, cocoanuts, cheese,
sugar and coflee, his object is to keep
■on hand a bountiful supply of these
things, all the lime.
Lanier House, Marietta.
We often hear of small men having
big hearts, it is so sometimes with ho
tels, arid particularly so with the above
house. It is a small house, but no
betiei living ought mankind to desire
than our old friend Dobbs affords.—
We know whereof we assert, tor we
have tried this house.
L. Fekouson’s is the place to go to
get cheap goods, lie is anxious to
sell and that is half the battle. Our
old Iricud, Tout Wilkes is with Fergu
son. Two such clever fellows seldom
get together under the same roof.—
Ferguson, is undoubtedly one of the
eliea; est houses in our market. He
expects to move soon to main street.
You have often heard of mer
chants marking down their goods to
suit the times, hut if you want to see
the iliing really done, go immediately
to Blair and Bradshaw's, and you will
find their stock ol Dry Goods, Boots,
Shoes, Hats and ready-made cloihing,
pi iced down, low down, away down
yondir, so the poorest person may get
an outfit for very little money. Come
and try ns and yen will find that this is
no humbug.
Bo sure and read tlie card of Laren
<h n it Bros., of Atlanta, to be found in
another column. Christmas is fast
.approaching and they have many good
things laid up in store for that great
event.
Tile T. S. Hotel, Atlanta, Ga.
Wo have been to many hotels in our
■day, but to none hotter than the 11. S.,
taking into consideration the way they
teed, lodge and entertain guests. —
Money spent here is by no means
thrown away. Tho very prince of
good fellows puts Up at this house—
Bryson tk Turner, clerks. Whitaker
<§• Sasseeu, proprietors, are always
cheerful and lively and ready to add
interest to your accommodation.
Oik Sidk Walks. —We think it time
that our side walks along in front of
the store doors on Main street, west
side of R. K., was being cleared of
obstructions, now that the buildings are
so near completion. So much scaf
folding and brick-bats is entirely un
necessary. As these thiegs can be
dispensed with let them be immediate
ly removed. We hope this hint will
suffice.
Southern Cultivator. —The No
vember number of this excellent month
ly is on our table, with a most attrac
tive table of contents. No farmer
should be without it. We observe that
it is advertised for sale on the 20th ol
November. To parlies who y,hi main
tain its present high character, it is a
most promising investment.
Tlie Cotton Tax.
Washington, Oct. 31. —Expect an
early repeal of the cotton tax. Nearly
all the members that are. or have been,
here are in tavor of it. The Eastern
manufacturers, too, are loudly calling
for it.
The low price of cotton, at home,
and the enormous product of East India
cotton, are bringing about anew feeling
on cotton and tariff.
You may expect to be importing
India cottou into New York in two or
three yeors. —A’. T. Express.
Northern Georgia did it. —A dis
patch from Atlanta, on the sth, probably
from Headquarters, announces that
110.000 votes were polled in Georgia,
and that a majority were cast for a
Convention.

ever shape or form he may present
himself.
