Local Hoad. Rome District Conference. The District Conference of the M.E Church South, Rome District, will commence its second Conference in the Af. E. Church in this place, on Thurs day night tho 30th inst. Dr Smith, President of Emory College in this State, is expected to preach the intro ductory sermon, tnd Bishop Pierce is expected to preside over the delibtra* tons of the Conference. There will be between 150 and 200 delegates present most of whom will be ministers. Let the people of Cartersville and vicinity ai thwgood citizens of Rome done last ytir ytr"" their hearts and hoas* es for th* entertainment of these dtele gates and extend to them a cordial welcome, irrespective ol name »>» order. This will perhaps, be the largest ec> elesiastical assemblage evei befcwe naet in Cartersville, and will draw people here from every section of upper Ga.— When they go from here they will speak cl the character of the place and its citizens. Our growing and prosperous town as well as the beautiful and fer tile country surrounding it, has a good flotation abroad-let not that fair rep utation and good name be tarnished by dogged indifference to the comfort and wants of the stranger who will be in oiT midst, for want of appreciation of the great and glorious mission that brings him here. Let it ne*er be said of Cartersville and Bartow County that they were too stingy to support an as itmbly of saints for two or three days, whose mission was to set in order the things that pertain to the House of God. « . We simply give this caution to our •itissnt in oirder to bring it prominent ly before their minds—not that they have ever before failed to do their duty on like occasions; but for fear that they may inadvertantly rely too mueh one -upon another, while it will probably /•quire the co-operation of all good and respectable citizens to afford them such accommodations as t hey may reason* ably expect to receive, and as we should fesl proud to afford. One-of thebest evidences of thrift we see in this section of country are the clover and grass fields and patches that beautify our hills and vaiiies with their verdure, and fill our stalls with fat sleek, stock and our dairies with rich golden butter. Scarcely a farmer in all the land, however humble his preten. sions, but who is experimenting with these important productions. Enough has been done already to convince the most ireredwious that thes* things can be grown to an extent approximating perfection, even ar far South as Bartow County. They can aril will be made to pay, in the end, thribble the amount that the great staple cotton jiow does. Cotton requires the labor ol aine months of the year tg plant, cul tivate and gather it, during which time it is impoverishing the already exhaus ted lands. Clover, on the contrary, requires but little labour—only the sewing and the reaping, which is done in less than one-fourth the time that it requires to raise cotton, and, then, it continually adds to the fertility of the land. Actual experiment has proven that an acre ol Clover will pay more clear profit than an acre of cotton of the best river bottom lands in this country, We have this from the Bps ol gentle, men whose veracity cannot be doubted. We have lands in Bartow County as well adapted to the growth of (’lover as the best lands in the States of Ten nessee and Virginia. The only reason why they raise it more successfully than we do is because they prepare their lands better, and use more stimulants. We were led to these reflections more forcibly by visiting the valuable and admirable plantation of our esteem ed and enterprising neighbor, Col. Lewis Tcmlin, a few days since. He took the pains to walk with us and show us his growing Clover and grass crops which were unsurpassingly beau tiful, and spoke, to our mind, volumes in favor of ibis, over any other section of country in the South it has vet fallen to our lot ta see. Col. T. has oce of the most valuable bodiea of land to be found in the Sorthern States, a large proportion of which is known and designated in this country ns “Hickory Orchard Lands,” It is ol a red color, very close and adhesive, but by far the best lands we have in this section.— He has a body of eight hundred acres half or more of which, is still in the woods, and extends along the banks of the Etowah river for the distance of nearly two miles. It is well timbered and but little distance from town* — These lands are admirably adapted to the growth ol Clover and the grasses, as any one can testify who will take the pains to visit and see for them* selves. We hope the day is not dis tant when Clover fields will become as common and extensive an cotton fields have been in the past, KAYTON'S OIL OF LIFE- -Cures Pains in the Buck, Breast, Sides, Shoulders and Joints.
