The Worn Out Lands of tt»«
South Fertilized with Human
Bone#.
Anion® tbe wild zh'd barbarous na
tions of the earth, there has ever ex
isted that most beautiful of all senti
ments —the regard of the living for the
remains of the dead. This affection
has furnished the antiquarian and his
torian with a key ’to the mysteries of
lost races and lost cenVuries. Mural
ciiies, pyramids, pillars and mounds
have been made to speak, while relics,
the result of ether sentiments, hate re
mained dumb. Like the “ troth of
gold,” this beautiful faith has ever been
kept, and with old mother earth to-day,
her living cTTTcS are only rivaled by
those p{ her dead, Ali things savor
ing of the desecration of the sepulchre
have ever excited in the mind of the
wise &nd the good, unmitigated horror.
Even the dead appendages of the liv.
ing body have beer. regarded a£ sacred,
and we remember being greatly
shocked by the written account of the
buying and selling of human
practiced a century or two ago in oth
er countries, and cor grinders only felt
relieved when we came upon the ad
tent of ivory and porcelain. The
traffic, too, in human hair, as revealed
in the expose attending the late war
upon the chignon, has undoubtedly
thrilled the susceptible nerves of many
of our lair readers, and quiet, staid
citizens. How often has our scalp
twitched at the recital of dark tales of
wild sindents, therein beautiful (?)
subjects were retflirtected and spirited
away, foed for the insatiate scalper.
Possessed of all this praisworthv
sensibility, what would be the indigo
nation of this refined community, if
boldly charged with driving a lively
trade in the bOnes of their deceased
relatives and friends ? Suclr, to a cer
tain extent, however, is the case.
Months ago a respectable firm some
where below us, engaged in the lauda
ble enterprise of collecting the anatom
ical remains of horses, mules, cattle,
etc., which once strewed the country
like a fall of snow—pa ft of the debris
of the late great armies—and redoctrtg
the same to an article of cohtffterce, to
be used as a fertilizer on tbe poorer
lands of the South. Among the nu
merous depots established for the col
lection of these bones, preparatory tb
their being shipped to the manufactory,
was Nashville. About ten cents per
bushel was the price offered, and the
idle Iforda of blacks hanging about the
tcity, availing just such jobs, were soon
"scattered o"vCr the neighboring hills
and open ground's, gathering, grubbing
and rooting like swarms of ants. Car
load after car-loiad was gathered and
shipped southward, until the supply in
this vicinity gradually decreased When
rag.picking, coal-gathering and iron*
filching resumed their wonted sway.—
Epme weeks since, however, other ac
cessible regions being alike exhausted,
Nashville was again made a receiving
pojut, and once nnre the hungry bone
hunters were put upon the frail. In
the "Vicinity of the Chattanooga depot,
and but a few steps from Church street
is.the principal delivering yard where
may be seen a huge hetacomb, daily
increasing in size, as the dusky hunter
arrive with wagons, carls, baskets,bags
etc, all loaded down with this nervveom
modity. We have often passed this
unsightly and not altogether savory
spot, with nothing more than, a casual
glance, until yesterday, when an un
accountable inclination seized us to
view it more closely. With a kind ol
mournful interest we drew near, and
gazed upon the heaps about us, until
our eyes were attracted by a peculiary
shaped bone protruding from the one
nearest.
Drawing it forth, we held in our hand
tin* rib of a man ! Upon a further search
we found a broken thight bone, and
what from dur limited knowledge Os
the subject we judged to be va'rious
parts of the human fiame. Heartsick
with painful emotions, we turned away,
but unpleasant thoughts would intrude
themselves. How many such bones
were bidden in that vast deposit ? Row
many bad already been shipped away ?
Perhaps a spirit of gain had prompted
the violation oT Hie tmpuk-hras our
brave defenders, sleeping so lightly
over the heights around us, were
being exhumed, and sold at ten tents a
ruislrtl to enrich the soil they died in
defending 1 It tvas all grief and humil
iation, and with our mouth ill the dust,
we hurried from the spot.
