POETRY. 8010. BY J. B. HICKKY. Ti* t bleak December dav, Kate; The tun ha* veil’d his light, And lendeth not a ray, Kate. To cheer the travellcr’-i sight. But vainly should the day assume The darkness of the night. If thou wert here to g!|<! the gloom. And make the darkness bright. The wintry winds are blowing, Kate, Adown the vacant street. And the brook has ce«*cd its flowing, Kate, And the snow is ’neath our feet. But wintry winds and snows, Kate, Are as settimer airs to me My heart so warmly glows, Kate, With the love it bears for thee. SACRIFICE. BY LATOXA. On another Wreck, Heart, in thy silent deep. Where so'emn soul-tides break. And stars of memory weep. Only another tomb On life's dumb beaten shore ; Only a gathering gloom Where glory flashed before. Only a dark eclipse, Hiding the light of Clod; Only two pallid lips, Kissing the smitcr’s rod. Very mute, and white and still! Cuibing the restless plaint. By firm, undaunted will, With spirit sick snd faint. • •***•• Only two patient eves, Uplifted, through God’s grace, W'th faith to the morning skies, Lit by the Saviour’s face. [Louisville Courier. Poetic Play upon Words. A correspondent furnishes Harper's Mega xinc with the following verses : Although we find most words to mean. The same by sound as sLht, Some mean according to their mien, So mind and write them right. Thus plans are never planes, ’(is plain. No more than hares arc hairs ; Ar.d belles are never bed's we know. And fares are never fairs. A sea-horse is a sea-horse when VVc see him in the sea ; But when we see him in the bay, A bay-horse then is he. Os course a race-course is not coarse t A fine is far from fine ; Ami though a mine a mine must be, It is not therefore mine. Although a night is not a day, And diflers from it quite ; Vet still it happens, odd enough, Adey’s sometimes a knig.-t. A river, when its current move* With rapid speed along, Is said most properly to be A stream both last and strong ; But when with thick ribbed ice ’tis hound, And speeds along no longer. Its waters then, though motionless. Are faster still, and stronger. Some words if spelled out l»y their sound Would seem but duplicates Os sundry letters strung in rows, At random, by the Fates; Others aga'n, like fabled books On the enchanters shelves. Contain, in simple potency. A spell within themselves. Thu* X T C, and N T TANARUS, Ar.d LEG we view, Are spelled in this quite simple way. And X L N C too. In others, not a letter has The sound it ought to have ; And seem mixed up as if to look Like Chance’s autograph. And thus in eccentricity VV e see some several c’s ; Also in coefficiency; But not one e in seas. But are there t’s in human eyes, But e’s there are in ease ; And in hubbubhubbubberous The 6’s arc thick as bees. Some cabalistic words have power To bind one’s foes in fetters ; No wender there’s a charm in words, When there’s a spell in letters. A pun’s a word that’s played upon, And has & double sense; But when I say a double sense, I don't mean double cents. As thus: A bat about a room Not lorg ago I knew To fly; ho caught a fly, and then Flew up the chimney flue. But such a scene was never seen (I feel quite sure of that,) As when, with hats, all h inds essayed To hit the bat a bat. _ To make a pair two pears it takes ; If ciphered out with care. You’ll find each pair, tho’ worth two cents, Is but a cent a pear. If one were ridden o’er a lot, He might his I t bewail; If on a rail, most likely he Would rail against the rail. A certain knight, whene’er it rains Gave to his horse the reins. And rode at random on the road, Heedless of neck or brains. The captain gave the mate a rope, To carry up aloft { And though i.e took it up aloft. It was not up a loft. Another one was sent aloft, A certain rope to bend ; And ti en. because he missed the rope, They gave him the rope’s-end. ****** 'Tis punishment for me to pun, •Tis trifling, void of worth ; So let it pass away, just like The dew that’s due to earth. “Pray, Mrs. Radri*!ii, why do you whip your children *o often ?” “La Mr. Worthy, I do it for their enlightenment. I never whipped one of them in my life time thut hedidn’t acknowledge that it made him smart.” A sister of Miss Schaffer, the young l*dy ul Alexandria, Va., who was late ly burned to death, and whose affian ced lover committed suicide from grief, ‘a* since died in consequence of her sorrow al the double affliction. WIT AID HUMOR. How would you measure your lov er’s sincerity T By his sighs. The best thing out—an aching tooth. Grant’s candidacy is likely to end in smoke. When beggars die there arc no Corn ets seen. Every one can master a griel, but he that has it. We all have our trials—except Jel!. Davis. Butler is like a corset —he abounds •n hooks and eves. There is no grace in a benefit that sticks to the fingers. To hasten marriage, lock up the girl and show the lover the door. Comfort for those prematurely gray whom the gods love dye young. There is no dungeon so dark and dismal as the mean man’s mind. Why is a joiner less handsome than his wife? Because he is a deal-plain er. Politeness often contributes more to one’s success in life than brains or ca pital. “Oh, for a thousand tongues !” as the urchin said when he crawled into the sugar hogshead. 1 never knew a man who was always anxions to repent of his sins before lie "had committed them, who didn’t want the sharpest kind of watching. “Has the railroad got in asked a gentleman of an Irishman, standing at the depot, thinking to quiz him. “One ind has, sir,” was Pat’s reply. I never bet any stamps on a man who is always telling what he would have done had he been there. 1 have noticed that this kind never got there. A dispatch in a backwoods paper slates that the Republicans at Chicago have nominated Gen. Grant for Presi dent and “Col. Fax” Vice President ! A young lady, while on her wav to be married, was run over and kilied. A confirmed old maid savagely remark ed ; “She has avoided a more linger ing and horrible destiny.” Faith don’t appear to be anvtbing more than tiptop good sense; and the faith that is in this world now won’t keep a man from falling to the bottom of a well if he lets go of the cutb to spit on his hands. The question why printers do not succeed as well as brewers is thus an swered : “Because printers work for the head, and brewers for the stomach -—and where twenty men have stom achs, hut one has brains.” Affectionate times—when everything is as dear as it can he. Why should a printer go hungry, wlied he can always convert his work into pi? A secret has been admirably defined as “an\thing made known to every body in a whisper. What is the difference between a hill and a pill ? One’s hard to ge: up, and 'he other’s hard to get down. “’Taint the while, nor yet the black folks what hah de most influence in dis world, hut de j ailer boys.” said old Aunt Chine, as she jingled a few gold coins that had come down from a for mer generation. * A thief who lately broke into a gro cer’s warehouse excused himself on the ground that he went in to lake tea. Thirty-five marriageble daughters of Brigham Young attended the Salt Lake Theatre in a row. A Western editor, in one of his pa pers says : “For the effects of intem perance, see our inside.” A grotesque simile is sometimes very ex pressive. W emay mention the com parison of a conductor who, in a dis cussion as to speed, said he ran his train so fast that the telegraph poles on the side track looked like a line tooth comb. From the Co'umbm (0.) Statesman. How a Husband mu Frighten ed by a Miticbleiutu Wife. “The man who set* his heart upon a woman” hath a rough old time of it, especially if he marry her and she prove to be a practical jokist. We have a case in point : A lew evenings since a voting mar ried gentleman of this city, whose wife is as mischievous a little hit ol femin inity as ever graced the earth since Eve made such a failure in the fruit business, started to Ins residence after his day’s labor was over, solacing himself with thinking of the loving heart awaiting his return, and the rich ripe lips that should great him at the threshold of his home. His heart was light, not a care mark was on his brow. He whistled as he walked, and thanking God that he was blessed with youth and love. He reached Ins abode andpipened the door. Astonishment seized him. There was no wile to greet him on entering. The well-known trunks and dresses were gone from iheir accustomed place! What could it mean ? He sees a note, evidently hastily written ami pinned to the counterpane. He seized it and re:’d, “Before you have read these lines I will be far away !” No reason was given for the hasty flight. He knew of none. His big heart felt like a stone, and teais of anguish forced themselvs to hi* eyes Gone! Gone from him who loved her so ! Gone ! Where ? How ? With whom ? Nearly crazed, he grasped his hat, and was about rushing for the telegraph office, when tbe door of ail adjoining room was opened, and the mischievous little w itch who had caus ed all this uneasiness placed a pair of plump little arms around his neck, and lie was fairly smothered with kisses before he found out it was only a joke. We would not advise our lady read er* to play jokes of this sort too fre quently. They might get in the way of it. and carry the joke too lat—apv two or three hundred miles. J. E.
