The citizens generally are invited wtiteoJ. ~ auxilary Bible Society to the Atneiican, t , o,rtow County, was organized at the M. y Church in this place,on Sunday night last The object of the society is to supply the poor anil destitute citizens of the coun’y with the .lire Word of Hod From our own observa tion we know that such a society is very much needed- It was organize lat the instance of jtev. Mr. Luckey, agent lor the above society. We were sorry to see the audience so impa ct to leave the church on that occasion.— It is » good worl< . and should call forth the sy m - nthies and co-operation of all good citizens Ivho fare for the future well being of their fel iuw-man. Ignorance and vice go hgrid in hand, and wi I eventually lead to destruction, l.etit never be said that the refined and Chris tian citizens of Bartow county, upon whom (rod is so lavishly bestowing His blessings, through, indifference or inedvertence to the wants of the poor and destitute, denied to them the W ord of Life. Let us, one and all, give, at least, a pittance of the good tilings which (foil has so mercifully bestowed upon us, to aid in spreading the Holy Scriptures broadcast over the land. A goodly number of our Radical friends re turned from the grand pnw-vnw at the Capitol, on Tuesday last, with a fly in their ear. Offi resjust out. WiH have a full supply on hand a t the next election, provided the “unterri fied” don’t interfere. We are rejoiced to sec that preparations are making to commence the erection of a two atory brick business house on the old site of George J. Howard & Cos., in this place, under the auspices of Messrs. Stokcly 6c Williams. The building up of this corner will improve the Jjoksufour town very much. The Grocery Store of A. R. Hudgens, in this place, has been burglariously entered late ly, and money abstracted from his drawer.— On Sunday night last, the light-fingered gentry undertook to enter again , and like to have re ceived a benefit —a load of buckshot. It is said that the rogues had both front and backdoors picketed outside to give notice to those who were to enter, upon the approach of any one. They were supplied with chloroform and Greek fire. Let a sharp lookout be kept, and ascet tain who it is that prowls around late at. night, or mischief, we fear, will befall our town. We ate sorry to learn that Col. J. G. Stocks, of this town, was thrown from his buggy, late on Tuesday evening last, nud his shoulder bone broken. 'The wound is not considered dangerous, but very painful. A correspondent of the At'anta Intelligen cer suggests the name of Gen. Win T. Wof ford for Congress from the. Seventh Congres sional District, in the approaching fa 1 election. With due deference to the claims of others, we say Amen. From prospects around us. we think wo may look forward with considerable degree of ecu - taintv, for a lively trade this .all and winter. The corn and cotton crops, ol thiAsection, pro mise an abundant yield, particular!/ the latter, which was never better than nt the present. Land hunters are numerous, and those having lands to rpnt arc driving a lively business in - r - ---•■■ ««•«<* ano steady, as it always will be in a county pos sessing the advantages that this docs >ii almost every respect. The county is rapidly filling up with good, substantial citizens, many of whom are renters, refusing to buy under the j mistaken idea that lands here will be cheaper. 1 We are again Drought under obligations to ourenterprising follow-citizen, (J. Every Lret <e wafts the glad tidings. From every quarter of the Union, we learn, the shout is raised for S'cymour and Blair, and thousands arc flocking to their Standard who have heretofore acted with the Radical party. Aaron Alpeoria Bradley h»s been expelled from the State Senate instead 1 of having his resignation accepted. Poor old ■ *nig,” He is now out as a candidate for Congret’S. A bush arbour is being erected at .‘he Cross Roadsubove Dr. W. H. Felton’s, in this .county, where a two days’ meeting will be held, com mencing on Saturday, the 22d inst., under the supervision of Rev. R. H. Jones. P. C., Barto .w Mission, and where an effort is now being made to erect a M. E. Church. A protracted meeting was hold at Liberty Grove Methodist Church, below Allatoona, last week, which resulted in 25 conversions and additions to that church. This church belongs to the Bartow Mission. At Brandon chapel, Cartersville circuit, during the same time, there wereseveral conversions and twelve additions to that church. It is said that many of de gemmen of Afric 'scent that attended the late Radical Conven tion in Atlanta, airived in that city upon the peoples’ line, and left, after it was over, upon the same line. Several were from a distance. Doubtless they felt much edified by their visit. 'The city council of Atlanta have tendered to the Legislature the use of the new Opera House in that city, in compliance with their agreement, hinged upon the removal of the Capitol of the State to that point. The Legis lature begun to growl lor elbow room. Joseph E. Brown has been appointed Chief Justice, and McKay and Warner Associate Justices, of the Supreme Court of Georgia.— Poor old Tray (Walker) gets no bone to pick. From the Atlanta Constitution. Rial In Atlanta. Last night a little after 10 o’clock, several negroes called on the police to arrest a boisterous and unruly sulragan. He was on the side-walk with pistol in band, cursing and abusing the white people, and swearing that “no damned white rebel son-nf-a-bttch could arrest him.” Two policemen at this moment laid their hands on him, and gave him to understand that he was their prison er. They moved down Decatur street towards the guardhouse. When near the alley leading to Tim Murphy’s boarding saloon, the negroes gathered in large numbers, and surrounding the Policemen and prisoner, at once com menced demonstrations to rescue. The Policemen blew their whistles and endeavored to keep back the mob—other policemen were now upon the spot, but with great difficulty made their way to the centre where their comrades were. About this lime, some one on jhe opposite side of the street gave the order to fire ; the order was obeyed, and the frrst shot struck voung Thomas, a Policeman. The fire was returned, and several discharges follow ed in quick succession. In the inelee the Policemen lost their prisoner, but three others were secured— orte of wtw»m was killed and the other two wounded. Tire negroes lied in great confusion, but soon rallied lower down on Decatur street and Commenced a forward movement for renewal of the attack. By this lime the whole police force was assembled and ready for ac tion, and a large number ol citizens were also out prepared for the collis ion. For some reason or oilier the “col ored troops” concluded discretion was the better part of valor, and quietly withdrew. In twenty minutes the city was as quiet and dark as the cave of oblivion. 'Hie negroes are not so much to blame lor such conduct ; their passions are inflamed by designing knaves, and they are being driven to their own de struction as a part of the scheme of the vilest political warfare that was ever watted for power and plunder. We are opposed to fighting the ne gro, except in actual self-defense, for he is ignorant and not responsible for the situation ; but the white men who incite them to riot anti bloodshed, should be made to feel the cold steel at the very first out break—strike down the leaders, and the negroes will -disperse and behave themselves. IV e mean exactly what we say. Ail Incident in the Early Life or Gen. Grant. BY HIS FATHER. One evening, in the early part of May, when Ulysses was fourteen years old, I told Orville to go and get the old flea-bitten in are and carry her to the pond to water. Now where we lived water was scarce, and it was a mile to this place. Ulysses saw Orville as he was rilling off, and being very fond, as all my boys were, of riding horse-back, shouted after bis brother, “Orville, Oh ! Orville, let me rjde ‘old flea’ to the pond.” Orville declined. “I say, Orville, if you will I'll give you my sheer of egg-bread to-night /” Orville stopped and let Ulysses take the horse, who went cantering along merrily. I relate this little incident to illus trate the difference between the two boys then, and which will give a clue to the reason why Orville won’t sup port Ulysses lor President. One loves the luxuries of life that are, to be found upon the “groaning board,” the other loves the pleasures that arise from a participation in manly pursuits. Or ville thinks the Democrats are going to beat., and lie will not have high taxes to pay, and will therefore have more money to spend upon his belly. Ulysses cares nothing about taxation or making money, but loves the glory of borses and being President. SPECIALS, EXTRACT OF A LETTER FROM Providence, Ala., May.l3, lSi’C.
