At meeting of the lowa “State Press Association,” an address was de livered—and a very sensible one. too by one of its members, from which ,vo make the following extract: ‘•ln speaking of the revenue of the press, 1 cannot retrain from expressing i:iv views of free advertisements. — There is always to be found in ever} considerable community a set c f men who imagine by some dispensation, they ought not, like other mortals, to oav for what they receive Editors have extraordinary facilities for mak ing their acquaintance, and are very kindly permitted to contribute to their support. In what other branch of bu siness would this be tolerated ? Al low that one has put the press under Home obligation, does he not generally expect to get back more than the worth of his services ?” “If a man does an editor a favor of a remarkable value, let him have his remuneration, cash.” On the other hand require him to pay for what the paper has done for him. It is as reasonable to expect a carpenter to shingle your house and the tailor to make your clothes with out charge, as to prepare and publish matter for another’s benefit without compensation. Long obituaries, mar riages ornamented by extracts from nil the poets, and lengthy puffs of some one’s corner lots or improve ments, come under this class of ad vertisements. This custom of gratui tous notices and advertisements from any quarter ought to cease, for tne reason that it would be a benefit to the editor’s pockets, and would in some degree abate an almost intolera ble nuisance. The editor’s path has more thorns than roses, and there is no law, human or divine that should oblige him to shoulder the burden of those who are too lazy or stingy to take care of themselves. People will come to terms where they find their interest are involved in a reasonable compliance.” School Visit.— Miss Hanseli’s female School honored this office with a visit on Wednesday last, in order to take a few dots in the art of Printing, many of whom witnessed the modus operandi of making newspapers for the first time. Vague are the ideas entertained by the masses as to how printing is done. — These false impressions may be correct ed by a simple visit to a printing office. We think it will pay any School well to spend a few moments in a printing office. (It may prove a little detri mental to the printers in the way of pied type, unless care is taken to keep hands off.) But in this case, wo are glad to announce, no such thing occur red. Printing is emphatically the art of the age, and should be fully under stood by all enlightened people. (.'art: u-iyillk Male and Female Acad. nv, Examination, Ac. —We had the pleasure to attend upon the Examina tion exercises of this institution, held on Monday and Tuesday last, under the immediate supervision of the teach ers, Messrs. Johnson & Pritchett. The examination of classes was thorough, and evinced, both on the part of teach ers and pupils, deep study and research* The rediness with which questions were answered and problems solved by the pupils, was sufficient to convey the idea that no time had been lost or opportu nity uuavailed, I)}’ the teachers, to ad vance their pupils in their respective branches of study. Their examination did not consist ia a repetition of studJ ied lessons for the occasion, but in M general review of all the grounds which their pupils had gone session. Bo far as we have j to learn, general satisfaction lu*. ' given, and. we think, that MesStw. J* cc P. may congratulate themselves up on the bright prospect that awaits {hem in future. Os their entire proficiency j as teachers, no one can doubt, as this examination fully exemplifies. All that | is necessary to secure perfect success,. is for the people of this community to act in harmony. This we hope they will do for the good of both teachers and pupils. The importance of union of action in the support of this school j cannot be too highly appreciated. — Our teachers are gentlemen who pride | themselves in their calling, and will make the school, if the people will on ly sustain them in their efforts, a mat ter of joy and pride to this section of country'. On Tuesday night, 29th, there was speaking by the boys and reading of Compositions by the girls. The exer cises of the evening were interspered with music by the Cartersville Brass Band. The boys and girls all acquit ted themselves in a creditable style.— Quite a large audience was in attend ance upon the occasion, and were veiy agreeably entertained, for several hours. Some three or four original speeches were spoken, by the boys, end several compositions read by the girls which reflected honor upon both teachers and pupils. Everybody was was pleased and went home, we think, more fully determined, than ever be fore to make one strong, united effort to plant this institution of learning upon a firm basis, by according to it that patronage and aid that its merits so justly demands. We cannot, in this connection, refrain from expressing our pride and admiration at the very ex cellent manner in which our Brass Band performed their part. No one who witnessed the occasion, and who had any sense of pride for his race and country', left that house that night with other than a strong desire for the entire success of the Cartersville Male and Female Acade my, and the Cartersville Brass Band. We learn that our fellow citizen, H- B. Rector, is about starting into tho manufacture of the celebrated Estrella Oil, or illuminating fluid, in Chattan nooga, Tenn. This Oil has been used in this community for several years and gives universal satisfaction. Mr. Rector will be assisted by our former fellow towns man, Dr. Kramer, well known in this community for many years as a chem ist. Fine Watches, Jewelry &c. Milam, died of Typhoid F«vcr on the 15th of June, 1869, at Cartersville, Bartow County, Georgia. She embraced religion in the year 1858, and joined the “Liberty Spring” Presbyterian Church in Lawrenece District South Carolina. A few months preceeding her death site had regularly attached herself to the “Friendship” Church at Carters ville, living since devoted to its wor ship, order and prosperity. After a few day’s illness the summons came for her to join “a more glorious Ch arch above,” which summons found her spir it ready for that solemn and inevitable event. For her death had no “sting;” for her it had no “victory,” for she had in the hour of health sought and found one to cheer and comfort her through life—and even in the dark hour of death, that “Comforter” did not depart from her; but illumined the gloom of her most trying hour on earth. Her spirit, in fond nature lingered on the brink of the river, regretting that her dear Husband and child could not fly away with her and be at rest forever. For she deeply regretted to leave them behind her, here amid the tears and woes of earth. But the hour, of disrolution had come, and cheered with the hope that she parted with them but for “a little while,” to meet them again in a world of light and life eternal, and soothed with a hope of immortality, she sweet ly and quietly breathed out her spirit. She now sleeps in Jesus. “Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep, From which none ever wake to weep; A calm aud undisturbed repose, Unbroken by the last of foes.” “Asleep in Jesus, peaceful rest, Whose waking is supremely blest; No sea woe shall dim that hour That Manifests the Saviour’s power.” * * * * * Lrwrenceville Herald please copy.
