the proprietor. We suppose this trade
has been effected with a view to the
erection of his large new hotel in this
place.

accession. They are drawing trade
from every direction, North, East,
South and West. From North Ala.,
Home, Dalton, Marietta, Atlanta, and
tho counties far and near, they bid fair
to do a large business. Mr. E. N.
Gower is a man of long experience and
has a most enviable reputation, while
R 11. Jones and H.' H. Hall, are first
rate business men and good mechan
ics. They ask, and shall they not have
a large shai-e of patronage of this lo
cality? They repair wagons and all
kinds of vehicles in the best manner.

A gracious revival of religion is
now progressing at Stegall's Method
ist Church, just across the river South
of Cartersville. The altar is nightly
filled to overflowing with anxious souls
enquiring the way of life. Several
penitent souls have been converted,
and the church greatly revived. The
meeting will be continued, from night
to night, during the week, and for
weeks, if the interest continues.

Zxsf The Concert and Tableaux giv
en at the Academy in this place, on
Thursday night last, by the teachers
and pupils of Miss IlanaeU’s School,
we are glad to learn, was an entire
success. Being absent from town we
did not have the pleasure of attending
md seeing for ourself. We, however,
!id see the beautiful scenery in and
above the stage, as arranged by the
young ladies of the school, which was
a cry pretty indeed. They were favor
ed with a crowded house, all of whom,
without a single exception, were verv
highly delighted. The young ladies
and gin, did great credit to themselves
and their teachers in performing all
their parts so well and perfectly. °Tho
music was grand and the characters
represented very striking and to tho
letter and spirit. They were aided in
their plays by some few young gentle
men who also did themselves much
credit. On Friday evening the young
folks enjoyed themselves very much
together in a social party at the same
place, given by tho teachers. Not be
ing present, and having no programme
we are unable to particularize as we
would wish to do, we can but give a
general notice of the occasion.
Personal.— We received a call from
Maj. Samuel 11. Chisman, of Virginia
on Tuesday last, who is representing
two New Fork Houses and soliciting
orders from the merchants of tho South
Maj. C., comes well recommended by
leading Editors and papers in Virgin
ia, as a high-toned, honerable Southern
gentleman, formerly on Gen. Beaure
gard s Staff’ and has in his possession,
a letter of‘recommendation from that
patnot and soldier to the merchants of
New Orleans. We ask for Maj. Chis
man a kind reception and liberal sup
port wherever he travels in tho South

A married lady, being asked to
waltz, gave the following sensible and
appropriate answer: “No, thank you

The ten thousand dollar’s of ten per
cent. bonds, recently issued by tho ci
ty of Grifiin, havo been negotiated at

pretty thoroughly soaked with bad
whisky, got into the gutter. After
floundering about for a few minutes,
one of them said: “Jim, let’s go to
another house—this hotel leaks.”
John Chinaman Coming South. —A
St. Louis dispatch dated tho 23d inst.,
says that the agent of the St. Louis &
Chicago Railroad received a dispatch
to-day directing him to procure trans
portation to New Orleans for 5,000
Chinamen who are going on Southern
plantations as laborers.
It is stated by a Washington cor
respondent—a class always reliable—
that Robeson who takes Borie’s place
as Secretary of the Navy, subscribed
five hundred dollars to bay General
Grant a house.
Age of the Queen. —Tho fiftieth
birthday of Queen Victoria was cele
brated in London on Monday, the 24th
of May. Victoria ascended "the throne
in 1837, in her 18 th year.

Hook one day walking in the Strand
with a friend, had his attention direct
ed to a very pompous gentleman, who
strutted along as if the ground were
his own. Instantly leaving his com
panion, Hook went up to the stranger
and said; “I beg your pardon, sir, but
pray may I ask —are you anybody in par
ticular ?” Before the astonished mag
nifico could collect himself so as to re
ply practically or otherwise to the
query, Hook had passed on.

Billy Edwards, we wish it distinctly un
derstood, is no sardine, but a number one
saddle and harness maker and repairer.—■
He is now engaged in putting up syndics
and harness for velocipedes, horses, buggies,
carriages, wagons, dump carts and trucks,
and can make them right or left handed or

One copper Still and Worm, seized of W.
It. Sheats and A. Cchuvcs of Carroll county,
Ga., on the 27th day of May, 1869, for vio
lation of Section 23, Act of Congress passed
July 13th 1800.
One Still, Cap, and Worm, Seized of G.
Richardson and 1). C. Coker, of Floyd county
Ga., on the 19th day of May 1809, for same
cause.
One barrel, containing about 11 gallons of
corn whiskey, Seized of W. W. Williams of
Carroll County, Ga., on the 27th day of May
1809, for violation of Section 45 of same Act.
One keg containing about 12 gallons of
corn whiskey, Seized of G. Richardson and
D- C, Coker, of Floyd County, Ga., on the
i9th day of May, 1809, for same cause.
Any person or persons, claiming any of
the foregoing articles are required to appear
and make such claims, within thirty days
from date and give bond as required by law,
otherwise, the same will be sold for the use
of the Lnited States.
