-CARTERSVILLE, GA., DEC. 21, 1871.
Agricultunil Department.
Written for the American Stock Journal,
HOW TO RAISE GOOD PIGS.
To make hog raising a success, a
man must begin right. And as De
cember is the proper time to begin
if a man wants early pigs. 1 thought
I would inform the readers of the
American Stock Journal of my
mode of hog raising, or tell them
how they may make hog raising a
success. -
In the first place, you want as
good sows as you can get, I do not
say the best you can get for I am
not going to tell you to go to a stock
raising and pay a big price for anew
breed, (though a majority of our far
mers would make money by it.) but
bow to make the most out of what
you already have, you should if you
have not done so, select your best
sow shoats, and separate them from
the rest of the hogs, and give them
a little extra feed that they may
make a better growth and be in a
thriving condition when put with
the boar. I want them in a thriv
ing condition that I may know that
they are in good health, for, when a
good health they are more likely to
get with pig, and are easier kept iu
condition afterward, fora sow should
never be allowed to fail away in
flesh during the period of gestation,
but should be kept growing if not
grown, and then I would keep them
fat enough to make good pork.
The length of time which either a
male or female should be retained
as a breeder must be determined by
other considerations than those of
age. In some cases, when the farm
er raises a large number of hogs, it
will perhaps prove advantageous to
pass off annually to the butcher all
his sows that have borne one litter,
and to reserve as breeders to follow
them their early spring pigs. By
such an arrangement he will get rid
of the barbarous practice of spaying
Jfreih, and also of all supernumera
ries during whiter, when the cost of
keeping exceeds that of any other
season, but we prefer old sows.
As to the boar I need not say
muQh. All admit that the boar
should be pure breed, and not a grade
animal. I would advise all who hare
not a thorough-bred male to at once
secure one, or the service of one, no
matter if you. do have to pay for it.
It is money invested at a good per
cent, and y )U will never regret it.—
As to h eed, suit yourselves. Any
of them are better than your elm
peelers, sand-diggers or razor-backs’
Now, supposing that you attended to
the foregoing directions, you should
keep a record of the time and by
what boar served. Now in four
months less five or six days you may
expect your sow to farrow, and now I
will require alittle more trouble and
a small outlay, I recommend that
you prepare styes, six by eight feet
made of plank, and made tight enough
to keep out the cold March and
April winds, but left open at the top
that is under the roof, say you plank
up to the eaves and then leave the
ends open, this gives ventilation and
also an opportunity to look in and
see how the inmates are getting on
without disturbing them. This style
mu st be Hooted and the floor secur
ed so that old sows cannot tear it
up, now put in a small amount of lit
ter as l ne as you can get, the finer
the better, leaves are very go.,d, you
should also place plank six or e gilt
inches from the floor on the sides,
these I call guards and serve for the
pigs to crawl under, and guard
them from being trcd upon or over
laid by the sow, and if generally
followed would sa'e many thousand
pigs annually. Now I said this
would require but a small outlay,
and so will give a plan that will save
material if not money.
Make a plank fence along one
side of your lot, it should be on the
highest ground if convenient, make,
it tight and as high as you want
your stye. Now set three posts six
feet apart and eight feet from the
fence, take twelve feet plank and
nail on to these, this will make one
side of the stye, whib your fence
will make the other. Now get six
teen feet plank and cut in two, and
naii on the ends and in the middle,
for a partition, this partition need
not be as high as the ends, thus you
will have two styes with but little
more expense than making your
fence, you can make your doors
either in the ends or sides they’
should be large enough to admit a
large hog, for a man should seldom
sell off his breeding sows, until three
or four years old, and by that time
they will be of good size, old sows
suckle better and raise liner pigs
than young ones. Therefore, 1 say
keep your old sows, three or four
days before farrowing, you should
put the sow in the stye that she may
become acquainted with it, for if you
■wait until she has made her bed out
of doors you will have trouble in
getting her up and unless her pen
is a staunch one she will tear it to
pieces in her effort to get out to her
bed, you should watch 'her closely
until she farrows and remove ail
dead pigs and the after birth, as the
eating ot it may cause the sow to
eat the living piag.
She should be fed sparlingly, on light
food, tor a day or two after she has had
h * r 1 >en , as much nourishing food as
she will «ut, lor no sow can furnish m il£
enough for a large and growing family
with scant feed. If you wish the pi KS *o
become properly developed, u ®
.applied .with ™l„ ofb.; t
they will eat.
Pigs treated thus wdl pay 20 per cent
better than those that art . neglected, ('nrl.
vfiould be taken to have each sow separate
“cine time before pigghig, and not allowed
toe much bedding, a s there i 9 less danger
of smothering her pigs than when much
litter is allowed.
