Seltjxiade mc*Q woieliip tlmr mak er. In tmrgery the lancet is always ap plied in vein. “ Beware,” said the potter to the clay, and it became ware. A Connecticut bchool-boy has writ ten a composition on the horse, in which he Bays it is an animal having four legs, “ one at each corner.” When a man and a woman are made one, the question is, which one? Sometimes there is a long struggle be tween them before the matter is set tled. An Omaha paper advises the peo ple “ not to make such a fuss over the shooting of one constable, as there are over forty candidates for the of fice.” Mr. Speckles says the best vegeta ble pill yet invented is an apple dump ling, for destroying a gnawing in the stomach —it is a pill which may always bo relied on. A practical jokist out West placed merely a few drops of nitro-glycereno on ab! cksmith’ei anvil. The former sit" of tin* building is now marked by an immense hole in the ground. A little girl was told to spell fer ment, and give its meaning, with a sentence hi winch it was used. The following was litterully her answer: " Ferment, a verb, signifying to work. I love to ferment in the garden.” A man in Danbury discovered that powder fried in lard was good for boils. He tried it. The stove cover is in the second stoiy now, though most of the rest of tire stove hits been collected. Ho was deceived iu the lard, ho says. A Snperiuteiidant of police made once an entry in his register, from which the following is an extract : “ The prisoners set upon me and call ed me an ass, a precious dolt, a scare crow, ragamuffin and idiot —all of which I certify to be true.” “ Von must have lived here a long time,’’ said a traveling Englishman to an old Oregon pioneer. “ Yes, sir, I have. Do you see that mountain ? Well, when I first came here, that mountain was a hole in the ground.” The Englishman opened his half shut eyes. “Is Miss Blinkling at home?” ask ed Mr. Sanders of tho Irish girl who answered tho ring at the door. “ Yis, I b’lave she is sir!” “Is she engag ed?” “An’ is it engaged you say? Faith, an’, I can’t tell tell ye, sir; but sho kissed Mr. Vincent last evening as if she had niver seen the like uv him, an’ it’s engaged I b’lave they are, sir.” A Western editor speaks of a con temporary as being “so dirty that ev every time he goes up stairs there is rt rise iu land.’’ We suppose he must be the same fellow who, twenty years ago, according to the papers of that period, lived at Olney, 111., and was so dirty that the assessor had to put him down as real estate. An editor iu Illinois engaging anew reporter received the following as his first effort: “ We are informed that tho man hoo stood on his head under a pile driver for the purpose of having a tight pair of bates drov on, shortly af ter found himself in Chiny, perfectly miked and without a cent in his pock et.” A Plkasinq Experiment.— Young men who go to Roe girls have adopted a novel method of obtaining kisses. They assert, on the authority of scien tific writers tlmt the concussion caus ed hv a kiss will cause the flame of a gas j*t to flicker and easily induce tho girl to experiment in tho interest, of science. The first kiss or two the par- ! ties watch tho flame to see it flicker, but soon become so interested in the experiment as to let it flicker if it wants to.— Exchange. A Yorso Positivist.—Parson— “ What’s a miracle?” Boy—“Dnhuo.” Parson—“ Well, if the sun were to shine in the middle of the night, what should you say it was ?” Boy—“ The moon.” Parson—“But if you were told it was the sun, wlmt should you say it was?” Boy—“A lie.” Parson —“ I don’t tell lies; suppose I told you it was the sun, what would you say then ?” Boy—“ That you wasn’t sober l”— Punch. Anything relating to ice is in order these days. The following sent us, although wo have a faint recollection of a former acquaintance with it, will he appreciated by our northern read ers, at least : Parson B. came out of bis church one day when tho walks were like glass,, from the frozen l ain upon them, aud bad proceeded homeward but a few steps when down ho went, flat upon the walk. Deacon J„ who was just behind, bluntly remarked : “ Ah, Parson ! the wicked stand on slippery places.” “ Yes, Deacon,’’ said the ready pas- ] tor, “ I see they do, but I can’t!” An Irishman who was in the cele brated battle of Bull Run was some what startled when the head of his companion on the left was taken oft' by a cannon ball. In a few minutes, however, a spent ball broke off the fin ger of bis companion on the other side. The latter threw down his gun and howled with pain, when the Irishman rushed upon him exclaiming: “You owld woman, stop cryin’! You are making more noise about it than the man who has just lost his head!” Too Clever.—An assistant of a chem ist recently put up a prescription for a young lady of a dose of castor oil. She innocently inquired how it could be taken without tasting it. He promised to explain to her, and in tho meantime offered her courteously 'a glass of flavored and scented seltzer water. When she had finished it, he said triumphantly, “You see, Vaiss, you have taken your oil and did. not know it.” The young lady Bciyeamed out, “It was for my mother.” Ayer’s Sarsaparilla A. as one of the most jj A effectual remedies of utation, based on its intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re markable cures. So mild as to be safe and beneficial to children, and yet so searching as to effectually purge out the great cor ruptions of Uie blood, such as the scrofulous and syjffiilitic contamination. Impurities, or diseases that have lurked in the system for years, soon yield to this powerful anti dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful cures, many of which are publicly known, of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases, Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive dis orders of the skin. Tumors, Blotches, Boils,Pimples, Pustules, Sores, St. Anthony’s Fire, Rose or Erysipe las, Tetter, Salt lthcuni, Scal<l Head, Kingrrorm, and internal Ul cerations of the Uterus, Stomach, and Liver. It also cures other com plaints; to which it would not seem especi ally adapted, such a* Dropsy, Dyspep sia, Fits, Neuralgia,Heart Disease, Female Weakness, Debility, and Leucorrhoea, when they are manifesta tions of the scrofulous poisons. It is an excellent restorer of health and strength in the Spring. By renewing the appetite and vigor of the digestive organs, it dissipates the depression and listless lan guor of the season. Even where no disorder appears, people feel better, and live longer, for cleansing the blood. The system moves on with renewed vigor and anew lease of life. PREPARED RY Dr. J. C. Their sugar coating makes them pleasant to take, and preserves their virtues unimpaired for any length of time, so tlmiethey are ever fresh, and perfectly reliable. Although searching, they are mild, and operate without disturbance to the constitution, or diet, or occupation.
