STANDARD AND EXPRESS CARTMHVILLK, <;aMAR 21,1875: iCBSPUntON: rwo DOLLARS A YEAR, IN ADVANCE What tree Ix-ars the most fruit to market ? A xie-trce. The longest and darkest night must have an end. Recollect that when troubles oppress you. The latest argument for the narrow guage is that the road to Heaven is built on that principle. A Sedalia editor says that a girl who is now called a V>eautifu» blonde, a few years ago would have been termed a “ tow-head.” An individual wants to know if Worchester sjx'lls Wooster, why Rochester don’t sj>ell rooster. The only remark the Grand Duke Is siad to nave made in Indianapolis was “ HoopenkofT, whoopmeupa \ is ki Kawtale.” “ How did you learn that graceful attitude?” asked a gentleman of a fel low lining in a maudlin way against a post. “ I’ve been practicing at the glass,” was the reply. Is this seat unoccupied?” asked an exquisite of an elderly lady of rustic design in the cars at Norwalk. “ I don’t know,” said she hastily, run ning her hands with a great deal of feeling over the surface. “It feels mostly like plush, but you can’t al ways tell.” A wife having lost her husband, was inconsolable for his death. “ Leave me to my grief,’’ she cried, sobbing, “You know the extreme sen sibility of my nerves—a mere nothing upsets them!” A minister once prayed: “ O Lord, we thunk Thee for the goodly num ber present to-night, and that thou al so art here, notwithstanding the in clemency of the weather!” “ I am afraid,” said a lady to her husband, “ that I am going to have a still - neck.” “ Not at all improbable, mv dear,” replied her spouse, “I have seen strong symptoms of it ever since we were married.” Two little school girls were lately prattling together, and one of them said: “We keep four servants, have got six horses, and lots of carriages. Now, what have you got?” With quite as much pride the other an swered : “ We’ve dot a skunk under our barn. “I want a Young Man’s Compan ion,” said a spruce customer to a book seller. “ Very well,” said the book seller, picking up a volume, “ here’s My Only Daughter.” “ Why, Ichabod, I thought you got married more’n a year ago?” “ Well, Aunt Jerusha, it was talked of, but 1 found out that the girl and all her folks were opposed to it, and so I just give ’em all the mitten and let the thing drop.” A young man went into a florist’s store in Boston to buy a rosebud for his affianced. Seventy-five cents w r as the price asked. “ Will it keep?” in quired the young man. “Oh, yes, a long while.” “Then you may keep it.” Exit young man. The Utica Observer says that the Clearfield fair consisted of a calf, a goose and a pumpkin. It rained so hard the first night that the goose swam off, the calf broke loose and ate the pumpkin, and a thief prowling around stole the calf, and that ended the fair. Asa Judge was delivering his de cision in a case the other day, he was interrupted by the vociferous braying of a donkey under one of the windows of the court-room. “ What is that ?” testily asked the Judge. Whereupon the lawyer against whom he was de ckling the case arose and said: “It is only the echo of the court, your Hon or.’ 1 ' The editor of an Indiana paper, who has been under the weather for several days past, dismissed his at tending physician because the latter promised to effect a “ Radical cure.” A man in Nebraska said lie could handle a rattlesnake the same way as u snake charmer. The churlishness of the undertaker in demanding pay in advance delayed the funeral four days. Schoolmistress (to dull little boy.) “Johnny, I’m ashamed of you. When I was of your ago I could read twice as well as you can.” Johnny. “Yes’m; but you had a different teacher from what I got.” At an Indiana railroad breakfast table, a -few days ago, n traveller from the east handed to one of his fellow travellers a plate of sausages, where upon the question was asked, “Is it safe?” To which it was replied, “ This is a prolific hog country, and it is safe to eat sausages wherever hog is cheaper than dog.” An American and Paddy were rid ing together, when they came in sight of what is very unusual in any civil ized State now-a-days, an old gallows and gibbet. This suggested to the ■ American the idea of being witty at the expense of his Irish companion. “You see that, I calculate?” said he, pointing to the object first mentioned. “ And now, where would you be if the gallows had its due?” “Riding alone” cooly replied Pat —Echange. A Colorado saloon-keeper said of a crowd: “ 1 couldn’t get their whisky strong enough for them, so, after try ing every way, 1 at last made a mix ture of poison oak and butternut. That fetched them. I called it the sheep-herder’s delight, and it was a popular drink. The first pike I tried ft on yelled with delight; the next one took two drinks and turned a double somersault in the road before the house. A peddler came along, and after he had taken several drinks of my ‘ sheep-herder’s delight,’ he went off and stole his own pack and hid it in the woods.” Jim Guppins was a very clever, nice, good-dispositioned, thick-head ed sort of a fellow, and was the butt of all the girls in his neighborhood. The most brilliant thing he ever said when some of the fair teasers ques ied him one day in regard to his wers of memory: “ How far back in your life-time can remember, Jim?” Oh, I can remember the day I was born,” was his reply. “ The day you were born!” exclaim ed one of the young ladies of the par tv. “ Why, Jim, what can you remem ber of that day?” Oh, I remember very distinctly, that on the day 1 was born I sat on a little stool in the corner of the fire place and cried for fear I was a girl.” A few days ago a very starchily dressed individual called at an out-of the-wav shop, on Howard street, ov er which swung the sign of Doctor Jeffries, . ... “ Is the doctor m?” he inquired of a dilapidated darkey who answered his summons. “He am dat, sir!” was the smiling rejoinder. , , , “ Tell him I think I have symptoms of small-pox, and would like to con sult him.” , , , The whites of the darkey s eyes grew intense, and his dusky com plexion assumed rapidly a creamy “ Golly, boss, what you say?” “ Tell the doctor I’m sick with the emall-pox, and wish to see him?” The astonished African gave a wild leap, and darting through an inner door, slamming it in the visitor’s face, cried out: “ Leve dis yer house! I don’t want no small-pox.” “ But the doctor?” “ Golly, boss, I’s the doctor, but I ain’t good at small-pox.” —Chimney Corner. “ I say, John, where did you get that rogue’s hat!” “ Pleese yer hon or ” said John, it is an old one of yours that missis gave me yester day.” Farmer Greeley says the ice crop ho irood this year, because there ffXtg mudiW to injure it.
