STAN DA HI) AN II KXHPKSS CARTKR*VILLE. tJ\.. APRIL 4, 187*. SUBSCRIPTION: TWO DOLLARS A YEAR, IN ADVANCE A NF.W MK The following very original poem we find in an exchange. A number of the lines may api>ear familiar, but wo have every reason to believe the production is entirely original: By the lake where drooped the willow, Row, ve*-els. row; I want to be a fairy, And Jump Jim Crow. An old crow sat on n hickory limb, None knew him but to praise. Let me kiss him for his mother, ' For he smells of Switzer kase. The minstrel to the war hat cone. With hi* banjo on bis knee. He awoke to hear the sentries shriek. There's a light In the window for thee. A frog he would a wooing go. His tiair wa* curled to kill. He used to wear an old gray coat. And the sword ot Itunker Hill. Oft in the stilly night. Make w av for liberty he cried. I won’t go home till morning, \V itli Maggie by my side. 1 am dying. Egy pt, dying, Susannah don't you cry. Know how sublime a thing it is. To brush away the blue-tail fly. The boy stood on the burning deck. With his baggage checked for Troy. One of the few immortal names. His name was l*at Malloy. Mary had a little lamb, He could a talc unfold, lie had teeth to cat hoe-cake. And his spectacles wore gold. Lay on, lay on, M< 'fuff. Man wants out little here below, Ami I am to lie the Queen of May, | So kiss me quick and go. THE IRISHMAN. There was a lady lived at Leith A lady very stylish, man, And yet in spite of all her teeth, She fell in love with an Irishman— A rusty, ugly Irishman, A wild tremendous Irish man— A tearing, swearing, thumping, bumping, roaring Irishman. 11 is face was no ways beautiful, For with small-pox ’twas scarred across, And the shoulders of the ugly dog Were almost double a yard across. (), the lump of an Irishman, The whiskey-devouring Irish man The great lie-rogue, with his wonder ful brogue, the lighting, rioting Irishman. One of his eyes was bottle green, And the other was out my dear; And the calves of his wicked look ing legs Were more than two feet, about my dear. <), the great big Irishman, The rattling, battling Irish man— The stamping, ramping swaggering, staggering, leathering swash of an Irishman. He took so much of Lundy Foot, That lie used to snort and snuffle, O; And in shape of size, the fellow’s neck Was as bad as the neck of a buffalo. O, the horrible Irishman— The thundering, blundering Irishman; The slashing, dashing, smashing, lash ing, hashing Irishman. His name was a terrible name, in deed, Being Timothy Thady Mulligan; And whenever he emptied his tum bler of punch, He’d not rest till he filled it full again. The boozing, bruising Irish man, The ’toxicated Irishman, The whisky, frisky, rummy, gummy, brandy, no dandy Irishman. d’liis was the lad the lady loved, Like all the girls of quality; And ho broke the skulls of the men of Leith, J ust by the way of jolity. O, the leathering Irishman, The barbarous, savage Irish man— The hearts of the maids, and the gen tlemen’s heads, were bothered, I’m sure, by this Irishman. m An Arkansas paper pulishes the following notice: Persons wishing to have their marriage or obituary pub lished, will please hand them in ear- Iy . i§| An inebriated person, seeing a globe lamp with letters on it, exclaimed : “Ilic, well I’ll be dogged, if some body hie, hasn’t stuck an advertise ment on the hie, moon, hie.” An Indiana editor makes a patriot ic appeal to his readers, saying: “If there is anything you know that is worth knowing, that we ought to know, and you know that we don’t know, please let us know it.” The parents of the marriageable young men of Atlanta, Ga., have agreed to enforce tvs a rule that young ladies paying attention to their sons must not stay later than ten o’clock at night.— Brandon (Miss.) Republi can. A Nashville negro set the house in an uproar by rising up and shouting out:—“ What all dis mean?” after he had been shrouded for the tomb. This was Saturday, the 24, and the “mourners” haven’t stopped running yet. ( Two sailors were sitting on the gunwale of their ship drinking grog. “ This is meat and drink,” said Jack, and fell overboard as he was speak ing. “ And now you have washing and lodging,” coolly remarked Tom. The Catskill (N. Y.) Recorder, has this to say about a “ Yankee school marm:” Avery “loil” Massachusetts school “ marm ” in Union county, S. €., has Just got through adding her mite to the population of that county. It was two mulatto babies. She says it was a Ku-Klux outrage. A gentleman was seen after Christ mas quietly walking down Main! street, Buffalo, with a small placard on his back inscribed: “ Choice Poul try Inside.” He says he will be very careful how he leans against any thing near a provision store after this. A Western young man was present ed by a young lady with a fine plait ed bosom shirt, made with an open back. He wore it hindside before for a year before he found out how it worked. On being told of his mis take, he remarked that he thought it strange that the young woman should put so much work on the back. Josh Billings says: “When you strikeile, stop boring; mennyaman has bored clean thru and let it all run out at the bottom.” A tree was cut down last week in Kansas containing two bushels of bees and three hundred pounds of beautiful transparent honey. Heavy.—They tell us of a railway in Kentucky whereon the locomo tives are assisted up steep grades by a yoke of oxen. Sensible.—Liberal advertisers are the men who “ mean business.” Those who don’t, only do a “ mean business.” Georgia increased more last year in the value of its property than in any previous year in its history. The Increase is estimated at $20,000,000. So mild as to be safe and beneficial to children, and yet so searching as to effectually purge oat the great cor ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous and syphilitic contamiSation. Impurities, or diseases that have lurked in the system for years, soon yield to this powerful anti dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful cures, many of which are publicly known, of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases, Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive dis orders of the skin, Tumors, Blotches, Boils, Pimples, Pustules, Sores, St. Anthony’s Fire, Itose or Erysipe las, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Kinprworm, and internal Ul cerations of the Uterus, Stomach, and Liver. It also cures other com plaints, to which it would not seem especi ally adapted, such as Dropsy, Dyspep sia, Fits, Neuralgia, Heart Disease, Female Weakness, Debility, and Leucorrhoea, when they are manifesta tions of the scrofulous poisons. It is an excellent restorer of health and strength in the Spring. By renewing the appetite and vigor of the digestive organs, it dissipates the depression and listless lan guor of the season. Even where no disorder appears, people feel better, and live longer, for cleansing the blood. The system move* on with renewed vigor and anew lease of life. PREPARED RY Dr. J. C. AYER & CO., Lowell, Mass., Practical and Analytical Chemists. BOLD BY ALL DRUGGISTS EVERYWHERE. Ayer’s Hair Vigor, For restoring to Gray Hair its natural Vitality and Color. which is at jag- -> preserving the or hair color, with tho gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are de stroyed, or the glands atrophied and decayed; but such as remain can be saved by this application, and stimu lated into activity, so that anew growth of hair is produced. Instead of fouling tiie hair with a pasty sedi ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from turning gray or falling off, and consequently prevent baldness. The restoration of vitality it gives to the scalp arrests and prevents the forma tion of dandruff, which is often so un clean! v and offensive. Free from those delete lions substances which make some preparations dangerous and inju rious to tho hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts long on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy lustre, and a grateful perfume. Prepared by Dr. J. C.
