The pro fession has in vain, for many years, sought diligently for some remedy that would enable them to treat these diseases with success. Is preity sure to show it-” Our enterprising young friend and model lx>ot and shoe dealer and man ufacturer, H. C. Hanson, who has recently opened in Cartersville in the “Little Brick Store on the Corner,” can fit out our ladies with shoes and gentlemen with boots which will pay the wearer to show, if there is any truth in the above stanza. He has no paper welted anti soled stock on hand, as ho manufactures by hand only. Martin Walker is his “Boss” workman, and everybody nearly, in these diggings, knows Martin. He is the acknowledged adept at this bu siness of the age, where his work is known. We have the first lady or gentleman yet to see, who hits worn his make of anything, whom he has yet failed to please in all respects.— Mr. Hanson has come to Cartersville lo establish himself in the shoe trade, and therefore lias commenced, these (lull times, upon a scale to sustain himself until times get better. He brought on no paper soled stock from the North, but intends to manufac ture, what he sells, here at home, not lK*ing able to assign any good reason why a Bartow County made shoe by a Bartow County citizen should not grace a southern’s foot just as well as one put up in liosfing. It remains to be seen who will succeed in the sale of Lis goods to southern people—the Bartow man or the Hosting puritan. Most beautiful calico in town, at Compton & Shockley’s, at 10 to I2j cents. Some little “nigs”—juvenile wards of the nation—down between Taylors ville and Roekrnart, on the narrow gauge section of the Cherokee Rail road, on Friday last, took a notion in to their woolly omniums to have a little fun, and accordingly piled up obstructions on the track of said road, whereby the train was thrown from the track, and a young man by the name of Thurman, an employee of the road, was seriously if not fatally injured. His injuries were such as to require the amputation of one of his legs above the knee joint, together with other cuts and Bruises of a very serious character. Dr. T. H. Baker, of this place, was called to the charge of the ease, who, aided by Drs. Sims, Allen, and others, performed the op eration. The litiJe “nigs,” we learn, have been lodged in jail to await far ther developments. P. M.—Since writing the above we learn that the “little nigs” have been whipped and turned loose. French calf skins, sole leather and shoe findings at Compton & Shock ley’s. Conductor Watkins, we are inform ed by his physician, Dr. J. A. Jack son, has so far recovered from his wounds as to be able to return to his home in Atlanta, which he did last week, with a good prospect of soon resuming his duties on the W. & A. R. R. _ Our friends, Mess. Briant & Brow n, are getting in a splendid assortment of Ladies’ Dress Goods, Parasols, Ac. The adjourned Term of Bartow Su perior Court convened in this place, on Monday last, and, after organizing the juries and swearing in the officers, they were discharged until Monday, the Bth day of July next. His Hon or, Judge Parrott, then proceeded to call over the Civil Docket, after which £ nerifF Rich announced that Court stood adjourned over as above stated. This step was occasioned by the in disposition of Judge P. to preside and his failure to secure another to preside in his stead. The lovliest sight of the season is those beautiful ladies’ turban hats at Briant & Brown’s. We see from our exchanges that volunteer military companies are be ing reorganized all over the State.— "What say the people of Bartow coun ty to the organization of an infantry and a cavalry company. Out of all Die companies this county furnished in tiie lute unpleasantness, we certain ly can find survivors enough in con nection with others who have grown up and moved into ourmidst, to raise two good companies—an infantry and cavalry. This would perpetuate the military pride of our people and af ford them means of recreation and enjoyment. Briant & Brown are the rising Dry- Goods merchants of our town. They have a splendid stock of new Spring and Summer Goods. Our neighbor and friend up the Tennessee road, Dr. W. H. Felton, showed us, a day or two since, glow ing on his farm three miles from this place, twenty acres of as pretty clover as Baaow county can produce, just one year old. What is remarkable about it is the fact that, three years ago tiie Doctor planted a portion of the ground in cotton upon which he put Zell’s Supe-Phosphate. The crop the first year, owing to the drought, was very light. The second year he again planted it in cotton, but owing to the failure iu the crop the year be fore he was discouraged from using sci il'zers. Last spring he sowed it in clover still using no fertilizers.— The entire field of clover now looks web, but that portion of it upon wnich the above fertilizer was used three years before, looks twenty-five per cent, better than the portion which had none. The difference is percept ible to a line, a quarter of a mile off. Goods 25 per cent. lower at Lieb man’s than any where else. U. S. Deputy Marshal, , made a descent upon our town, one day last week, and gobbled up one of our citizens, John Hood, upon a requisi | tion of the Governor of South Caroli na, and carried him back to that State. | He was charged with interfering in some way with a darkey’s liberty at the ballot box in that State. Letters from Mr. Hood represent him as be ing in Columbia, in prison bounds under bond. He was a quiet and or derly citizen of our town. Messrs. R. W. Satterfield & Bro. are just through opening one of the finest stocks of Spring and Summer Goods, Clothing, eet., brought to this market this season. See advertise ment in another column. A HORSE POWER & THRESH ER, nearly new, for sale. Call on Gilbert & Baxter, Hardware Store, April 23,1872. Cartersville, Ga. Mr. Jshani Alley has just returned from New York, and says he bought goods enough to supply all his cus tomers with the very best at the low est prices. He has commenced receiv ing them, and he and young friend Watkins ask all their friends and the public generally to call and see what a nice stock they have, and make their purchases, if desirable. H. J. Sligh is running his two gro cery houses with elegant stocks of Family Groceries!. Rumor has it that Misses Moon & Salford's pupils are going a pic-nic ing to Shelman’s Spring about the first of May, and that Miss Verdery’s music class is preparing to honor our town with a musical festival soon. You will no doubt save money by (•ailing on S. & M. Liebman before buying your Dry-Goods, Clothing, &c. A couple of young men in town in answer to querries propounded to a fortune-teller some where north con cerning their future matrimonial al liances, received letters recently, from said diviner of fortune, enclos ing the photographs of their intend ed spouses with instructions as to col or of eyes and hair, and informs them that one lives in Minnesota and the other in Baltimore. We have not been able to learn conclusions. Notice advertisement of the sale of the old Skinner hotel lot, in this place, to be found among the new adver tisements in this paper. There are nine villages and towns in Bartow county. The finest and largest stock of Dry Goods, Clothing, Boots, Shoes, &e., Ac., Ac., has just been received by S. &M. Liebman. There is no use of saying anythiug about prices, but one thing we will say, and guarantee that if you ever go there with the inten tion of buying goods in their line, you will buy them twenty-five per cent, cheaper than in any other house in this town. Their motto is quick sales and small profits. The damages assessed upon the real estate of Mrs. Harrison and J. I. Chamberlin by opening Market sir., by the jury last week, before Justice Cox, amouted to SSOO. A petition has been gotten up and numerously signed by the citizens, praying the council to open Main in stead of Market street. Which peti tion the council is consideiing. Messrs. W. IT. Stiles & Cos. have given up the old Lewis & Jones’ furn ace on Stamp creek near Wolf-Pen in this county, and have leased the old Novelty Works, a little below cn the same creek, for a number of years, whlch they have repaired and are now in full blast. Work on the old Etowah Iron Works, we are informed, has been postponed until next fall. A fine stock of Ladies’ Dress Goods at astonishing low prices at Lieb mans. We have one of the handsomest banking establishments in the Soma. Just opened. Capt. I). W. K. Pea cock, Agent. Avery (to us) ‘strange b.rd called Loon, a native of the arctic regions, sometimes called the northern dive’’, was brought to this office last Wed nesday, by Mr. Jo. Harwell. It was shot and killed in the Etowah liver, near this place only a few hours be fore. It was evidently a water fowl, as its web feet plainly showed. Its head, neck and beak resembled - hat of the nutscovy duck, while its legs were set in its back, giving it when on its feet an erect pos’tiou. It has been stuffed, and may be seen at Messrs. Wilkies’ Bakery. Clothing to suit young and old, rich and poor, at S. & M. Liebman’s. Mr. Wm. Gouldsmith has just re ceived at bis Furniture Store on west Main street nearly opposite this of fice, a fine lot of stuffed birds, which are beautiful to behold. Most of them are natives of the tropical regions.— It will well repay any one’s lost time to call in and see them. Mrs. Ja*n A. Stone died at her resi dence near County Line M. E. church, above the old Cooper Stamp Ci«ek furnace, of Cancer of the Breast, on Sunday evening last. She leaves an affectionate husband, several child ren, and a host of friends to mourn their loss. She was an exemplary member of County Line church, and has been for many years, and her house was always the preacher’s home. Don’t forget that next Friday, the 2Gth is Decoration Day at Cassville. This section was visited by a slight frost on Tuesday morning last, but not sufficient to damage vegetation to any extent. Such a lightening and thunder storm as is seldom witnessed in a life time, visited this locality on Sunday night last, accompanied by torrents of rain and some hail. The weather is quite cool for the season. S. of T. Carlorsvide Division No. 13. Sons of Temperance, meets every Monday night at Masonic Hall at c’e'odi. S. 11. PATTILLO. W. P. R, M. Hardaway, R. S. We had a real old-fashioned runa way in town, Tuesday morning last. Mr. Register’s tin wagon with two mules attached, loaded with tin-ware for the mountains, started out of town on a 2:40 schedule—the driver, our esteemed young friend, J. Henry Powell was not seriously hurt, but the wagon was, and that badly. The Division of the Sons of Tem perance in this place, is prospering finely, we are glad to learn. Three brick-yards in full blast in town. This looks like business. Nobody seems disposed to venture a suggestion about our Leap-Year May-Day Party. All too busy to en gage in a little annual pleasure ex cursion and social reunion. Any thing that smacks of “socialism,” we are sorry to say, meets with but little favor among our self-denying, green back-loving people. Our young Brass Band will dis course the music for Decoration Day at Cassvilh?. The Premium List of ti e Central Cherokee Georgia Agricultural Asso ciation, for 1872, has been made up, and will appear in the columns of this paper soon. Perfectly safe in all cases as'millions of mothers can testify. The True Grounds of Confidence. Whence conies that firm reliance, that abso lute, undoubting faith in the efficacy of Hostet ter’s Stomach Bitters as a remedy for indiges tion, billions disorders, intermittent and remit tent fevers, which notoriously prevail in all parts of the United States? This confidence has been growing for twenty years, and it is still extending, it is not the' result of credulity; it has not been engendered by any human de vice, but is the spontaneous and natural conse quence of experience. What people see daily going on under their own eyes they cannot question. When families in unhealthy districts that resort to this wholesome vegetable tonic, as a preventive, escape periodical fevers, and their immediate neighbors, who neglect this precaution, are prostrated by the disease, how is it possible that the phenomenon should be without its lesson? In like manner when it is seen that obstinate cases of dyspepsia, of liver complaint, ol constipation, of nervous weak ness, and of general debility, yield to the ope ration of the famous remedy, how can even incredulity itself withhold its endorsement? Eye-witnesses of the salutary effects of the Bit ters are to be found in every civilized settle ment on this continent. The thousands upon thousands who owe their restoration to health and strength, or their preservation from sick ness, to its extraordinary medicinal properties, are enthusiastic in its praise. The multitudes who recommend it in a neighborly way to their friends and acquaintances, as well as those who make public their estimate of its virtues, are always ready to state their reasons for the faith that is in them. They have all either felt or witnessed its beneficent operations. apri!4-lm. Editorial Notices are so common that il is almost impossible for an editor to express his honest opinion of the merits ot any article with out being suspected of interested motives. This fact, however, shall not deter us from saying what we think of anew addition to the Materia Medicato which our attention has been recent ly directed. We refer to Dr. J. W alker’s Cal ifornia Vinegar Bitters, a remedy which is making its way into more families just now than all the other advertised medicines put to gether. There seems to be no question about the potency of its tonic and alterative proper ties, while'it possesses the great negative re commendation of containing neither alcohol nor mineral poison. That it is a specific for Indigestion, Ililliousness, Constipation, and many complaints of nervous origin, we have reason to know; and-we are assured on good authority that as a general invigorant, regula ting and purifying medicine, it has no equal. It is stated that its ingredients, (obtained from the wilds of California,) are new to the medical world; and its extraordinary effects certainly warrant the conclusion that it is a compound of agents hitherto unknown. If popularity is any criterion, there can be no doubt of the effi ciency of the vinegar Bitters, for the sale of the article is immense and continually increas ing. april 11 -4t; CORRECT THE STOMACH.
