An Irishman describing the growth of potatoes in his native land, said, as a clincher, “ An’ sure, a bushel of them will till a barrel.” Bubbs wonders where all the pillow eases go to. He says ho never asked a girl what she was making, while engaged in white sewing, without be ing told it was a pillow ease. In the absence of globes, how do you illustrate the shape of the earth to your scholars?” asked a commit tee of a school-teacher. “ I shows ’em my head,” was the reply. A man named Wells having step ing upon a quicksand in the river near Brownsville, he instantly sank out of sight, whereupon one of his companions remarked, “ that’s a new way of sinking wells.” A New Albany bride waked up in the night, forgetting she was mar ried, and aroused the neighborhood with a rapid succession of shrieks. Bhe mistook John for a burglar. You paid for it for a year; we faithfully perform ed our part of the contract to the ve la' day, and gave you due notice of the expiration of your subscription by a printed circular, and asked you to renew. We solicited your patronage and you didn’t respond favorably; in point of fact, didn’t pay for it again, so we dropped you frpm our list, re gretting that you did not wish to con tinue patronizing us, but not intend ing to vary from our business rule, adopted by the ‘ Southern Associated Press,’ requiring payment for sub scriptions to be paid in advance, even to keep your name on our lists. The Selma Times does not beg patronage on the ground of personal favor. We try to give a quid pro quo for your money. Our expenditures are enor mous* Cash has to be paid for every thing done for us. Our printers, pressmen, mailing clerk, office boys and our telegraph bills have to be paid every week, and it takes money, considerably more than some men imagine, to meet current office ex- Senses. While we have the Selma avings Bank in our front, we have not a bank to our back to meet our bills, and, we are not running the Selma Times for glory , not a bit of it. While we purpose to be liberal to all deserving objects, and are willing to extend every courtesy and aid to be nevolent enterprises, we intend that parties who subscribe for the paper must pay for it in advance. When your paper isstopped after having been given notice of the expiration of the subscription, the fault is yours, not ours, it is no reflection upon you at all, it is not because we are afraid you won’t pay, but it is to conform to a business rule that we have adopted, and to save the expenses of collect ing.” Senator Scott, of Pennsylvania, is talked of for the vice presidency on the Grant ticket. So mild as to be safe and beneficial to children, and yet so searching as to effectually purge out the great cor ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous and syphilitic contamination. Impurities, or diseases that have lurked in the system for years, soon yield to this powerful anti dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful cures, many of which are publicly known, of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases. Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive dis orders of the skin. Tumors, Blotches, Boils, Pimples. Pustules, Sores, St. Anthony’s Fire, Bose or Erysipe las, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scaltl Head, ltiugworm, and internal Ul cerations of the Uterus, Stomach, and Liver.
