Ml 11S< TUITION :
TWO DOLLARS A YEAR, IN' ADVANCE j
Agricultural Department.
1 THREE ACRE FARM.
Ten yeel's ago an Irishman —who,
for short, we will call St Nick—bought
three acres of land, for which he paid,
with a one story new house thereon,
four hundred and fifty dollars, counts
ing the tenement three hundred and
seventy-five, and the land the balance.
Hiring a pasture, he purchased a cow,
and with serene faith, began to work
in his new-bought soil. It was worn
out: it would not summer a two year
old steer, and the rent would have been
considered exorbitant if over four dol
lars a year. He has since added two
acres of rocky bush pasture, but with
totter soil than his first purchase, and
in addition to the crops raised on both,
he annually hires sls worth of pastur
ing and buys $25 worth of hay.
year, with his first purchase and one
acre of his last under cultivation, he
raised (actual measure) of potatoes
one hundred and ten bushels; of corn,
eighty-five bushels of ears ; of beans,
three bushels and three pecks; of cab
bages, seven hundred heads; besides
twenty-one bushels of oats, and a lit
tle over one ton and a half of clover
hay.
He fattened two hogs, one of which
sold for 14 1-2 cents a pound, and
weighed three hundred and four
pounds; the other, salted for himself,
weighed three hundred and one
pounds. His dozen hens (average)
bought nearly all the stores supplied
for a family of three, besides paying
for their food. And in addition to all
this, he raised a calf which a neighbor
gave him, that enters upon its second
summer worth $lB. His dairy, now
increased to two cows brought him a
little over S9O in cash for the butter
sold, and $21.43 for the two calves.
All this the labor of a man quite
advanced in years, and physically in
capable of doing much more than half
a man’s work. He bought the house
and land mostly on credit; has his
debts now nearly paid ; has doubled
the value of both his purchases, and
when his labor is over, will leave his
wife arid daughter a littleestate, work
id out of this sterile, root-bound and
rock-bound soil in ten years. lie
commences this year with a light
heart, at least fifty loads of manure,
two cows and the calf, two wintered
pigs, twenty hens, and the hope of
raising more on Ids live acres than
half the poor farmers of the country
will raise on fifty.— Cultivator.
Trees.—The Agricultural Conven
tion at Washington: resolved, “that
we earnestly advise and entreat the
farmers of our, whole country, who
are favorably located for the purpose,
to plant forest trees, not merely for
shade and ornament, but by the acre
and hundreds of acres, in order to re
produce forests, to take the place of
those that are Deing so rapidly and
fearfully demolished in every direc
tion, thereby not only providing for
the actual necessities of those who are
to come after us, but also to avert ca
lamities that can neither be imagined
nor described, that must eventually
ensue whenever our broad land shall
be stripped of its forests, and conse
quently deprived of the numerous
beneficient influences they are known
to impart.
Iron Water for Plants.— lt is
stated that wonderful effects may be
obtained by watering plants and veg
etables with a solution of sulphate of
iron. Treated in this way, beans will
grow nearly double in size, and will
have much more savory taste. The
I tear seems especially benefitted by
this treatment. It is equally appli
cable to plants and flowers imparting
to them unusual growth and beauty.
Old nails thrown into water and left
to rust, will give it all the necessary
qualifications for forcing vegetation
as described.
FRUIT GARDEN.
Whatever may be said of birds and
their evils when the fruit is ripe,
there can be but one opinion about
their value now. They have nothing
but insects to live on, and they eat
them by the millions. Insects are a
far greater scourge to the fruit growth
than birds,—it will be wise to encour
age them. We see the English spar
row is getting naturalized in various
parts of the country. We expect to
hear in time groatcomplaintsfrom its
graminivorous propensities} but this
can be better guarded against than
the attacks of insects.
It seems as if we are again to have
plums and cherries, the plum you
know is readily kept down now that
it is true nature is understood. The
curculio is now the only formidable
one left, and he falls back before ‘eter
nal vigilance.’ Our markets were
loaded with plums last year. Some
body grows them.
In planting fruit trees, aim to have
them so that the hot, dry sun will not
have full effect on the ground about
the roots. The great heat in this way
injures the trees. Many who have
trees in gardens, plant raspberries un
der them. The partial shade seems
to be good for raspberries, and helps
the trees. Blackberries would, no
doubt, do well in the same situation;
and strawberries, it is well known, do
not do badly grown in the same.
It has been noted that the grape
vine thrives amazingly when it gets
into an asparagus bed. These are
generally elevated, are thus dry,—
while the rich soil necessary for aspar
agus is also good for grapes.
A NORTH CAROLINA STORY.
The Raleigh News is responsible
for the following .*
Years ago then; lived in Warren
county a good and pious Minister of
the Methodist Church, the Rev. Mr.
Burge.—His young eight-year old
hopeful, Watty, was mischievously
addicted to the habit of purloining
from his mother’s closet sugar from
the dish ; remonstrance by the father
and mother proved of no avail, and
though Watty protested his inno
cence. The old lady said she would
watch for him and chastise him.
The Rev. Dr. Closs, then Presiding
Elder of the Conference District, in
passing through the section halted at
Mr. Burge’s to spend the night. He
was assigned to a room adjoining the
closet, the scene of young Watty’s
depredations. At the first dawn of
day on the following mornning, the
Reverend gentleman arose from his
couch and repaired to the closet, a
door of which opened into his room,
to attend to his morning devotions,
and unfortunately for him, knelt
near the usual position of the sugar
dish. At this moment Mrs. Burge
had occasion to visit the closet, and
quietly opening the door, discovered
“ Watty’’ in tne very act as she

It is unnecessary to add that “ Wat

ises that enjoyed “ the scene that

Ayer’s Cathartic Pills,
use; and every family should have them on hand
for their protection and relief, when required.
Long experience has proved them to be the saf
est, surest, and best of all the Pills with which
the market abounds. By their occasional use,
the blood is purified, the corruptions of the sys
tem expelled, obstructions removed, and ihe
whole machinery of life restored to its healthy
activity. Internal organs which become clogged
and sluggish are cleansed by Ayer’s Pills, and
stimulated into action. Thns incipient disease
is changed into health, the value of which change,
when reckoned on the vast multitudes who enjoy
it, can hardly be computed. Their sugar coating
makes them pleasant to take, and preserves their
virtues unimpaired for any length of time, so
that thev are ever fresh, and perfectly reliable.
Although searching, they are mild, and operate
without disturbance to the constitution, or diet, or
occupation.
Full directions are given on the wrapper to
each box, how to use them as a Family Physic,
and for the following complaints, which these
J’ills rapidly cure:
For It.vsiiriMia or Indigrttion, Liatlrai*
ncaa, Lancuor and Loaa of ,ip|ia-tila‘,tlicy
should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom
ach, and restore its healthy tone and action.
For liver Complaint and its various symp
toms, IlilioiiN Headache. Mick Head
ache. Jaundice or Careen Sickness. Ilil
ioua Colic and Jlilious Fevers, they should
be judiciously taken for each case, to correct the
diseased action or removo the obstructions which
cause it.
For llyacntorr or Diarrhoea, hut one
mild dose'is generally required.
For It hen ilia tisin. Clout, <« ravel. Pal
pitation of the Heart, Pain in the
Side, Hack and JLoins, they should be contin
uously taken, as required, to change the diseased
action of the system. With such change those
complaints disappear.
For Dropsy and Dropsical Swellings,
they should he taken in large and frequent doses
to produce the effect of a drastic purge.
For Suppression, a large dose should be
taken, as it produces the desired effect by sym
pathy.
Asa Dinner Pill, take one or two J’ills to
promote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels, restores the appetite, and invigorates the
system. Hence it is often advantageous where
no serious derangement exists. One who feels
tolerably well, olten finds that a dose of these
Pills makes him feel decidedly better, from their
cleansing and renovating effect on the digestive
apparatus.
