STANDARD AND EXPRESS CARTERSVILLE, GA., JUNE SUBSCRIPTION : TWO DOLLARS A YEAR, IN ADVANCE PATBONIMICS. NO. IV. We have a large number of sur names derived from occupations, such as Masons, Carpenters, Butlers, Shep herds, Chapmans, Millers, Miners, Bookers, Brewers, Skinners, Dyers, Mercers, Chandlers, Ropers, Coopers; which list can be extended indefi nitely. Some of our patronimics are femi nine forms from the Anglo-Saxon mode of forming the feminine of nouns of action it SUr. Thus Spinis ister is the the regular feminine of Spinner; so Boxter feminine of Ba ker ; Webster of Webber or Weaver ; Brewster of Brewer; t Feminine edi tor.) Tne next class of surnames come from personal qualities or peculiarities. Ist, Complexion , as Black, Blackman, Brown, Browning, Fair, Fairbairn, Rouse and Russell, (mean red; Red man, Scarlett, W hite, Whiteman; Color of hair, Blackhead, Bladdock, Grey, Grissel, Hoare, Whitlock, Whitehead ; form of head, (and ap pearance;; Longhead, Broadhead; Stature, Longman, Longfellow, Toll man, Bigg, Bigger, Small, Strong, Weakley, Armstrong, Little, Short, Shorter, Low, Lower, Swift, Light foot, Slow, Starkie (strong-bodied,) Crump, (crooked; Mitchell, (great) Hale, (healthy,) Carr, (stout) Dade, (short-legged). Mental qualities, cow ard, meak, moody, bold, sly, lively, gifford (liberal,) wild, noble, blythe, steme, merryman, rush, Barrat, (cun ning) vaughn (little,) steptoe, dance. Those derived from Astronomy, Sun Moon, Stars; Quadrupeds, bear, brick, badger, bull, Bullock, coney, fox, fawn, hart, hog, bacon, hare, lyon, lamb, oldbuck, stag, wolf. The list can be run through birds, fishes, in sects, vegetables and minerals, such as drake, duck, dore, finch, heron, joy, culser, (pigeon) bass, crabb, herring, fisk, bugg, Iks*, bean, pease, clover, oats, primrose, lemon, rose, rice, dy rnoml, gold, Jewell, steel, Hint, stone. Now, to account for such names is not so easy. It is highly probable they were nicknames, expressive of char acter. We have Stonewall and Old- Hickory. A large number of our common names have been naturalized. My ers, when Herman, a farmer; Higgin botham, from Ickenbaum, an oak tree. When foreigh names are trans lated, they are lost, thus Kleins, a Lerman family name, when transla ted, some were called Little and some Small, making three names from one. Mr. Leiber tells of a Spanish boy, whose Christian name was Benito, who, becoming a sailor, was called Ben Eaton, and finally adopted by him when a man, and written Benja min Eaton. A German called Feuer stein (Flint) settled in Louisiana, and became Pierre a Fusil, (French for fiint); after this territory became American, Pierre a Fusil, was trans lated Peter Gun. A child was found and received the name, Tom Among us. Becoming a man of eminence, he changed it to l>r. Thus. Magnees. Nicknames fre quently become permanent. Thus Mr. Johnson was a pig dealer, and was nicknamed Pigman, by which name his son ever after was called. This is peculiarly true with minds. They have two names, the patronim ic and sobriquet. On an apothecary’s book stands a charge against Thomas Williams, vul go diet, Old Puff. An attorney’s clerk had a process to serve on Adam Green, and enquired in vain for such a man. A young woman offered to aid him. Adress ing a boy, “Oy say, Bulleyed, does thee know a mon nearned Adam Green?” Answer no. To another, Lay-a-bed, but Lyc-a-bed was equally ignorant. Then Stumpy, Cowskin, Spindleshank, Cockeye and Pigtail, were invoked, but equally in vain. At last she recollected, and exclaimed, “ Dash my wig! whoy he means my feyther;” and turning to the clerk, added, “Yo should’r exed for Ode Blackbird.” It is stated, that in a small town of Folkestoe, Kent, there were fifteen persons whose hereditary names were distinguishen by Doggy, Hall, Feath ertoe. Bumper, Pierce-eye, Jiggery, Fumble Foot, Silver-eye, Lumpy, Sutty, Thick-Lips. I close this No. with the promise to you and your readers, to conclude the series in my next. * Dagger. Agricultural Department. WEEDS. If you keej> a garden, keep it well. Now is the time to be vigilant. Don't let the weeds grow —not even the little weeds. They are sending down their greedy little roots after the rich phos phates which cost much money. They are stealing your strenth by stealing it from the fruits which you are to eat, and which should come to you in a vigorous and healthy condi tion. If the lives of these have been starved, they cannot assist much in building up vigorous life in you. The best proof against disease and debility, is to eat fully developed, ripe, vlgor our, wholesome food. Gnarled, wormy, or imperfect fruits and vege tables, only encourage disease. Don’t let the weeds—the Tilth weeds, steal the strength of your soil from your plants, they need it all, and if they are permitted to have it, they will have strength to resist parasites, and will give you in the end, beautiful perfect and healthful fruits. Then keep ahead of the weeds, fight them at the start, (it is so easy to get behind —to forget the garden until the labor of hoeing exceeds the whole value of the crops.) If it was worth while to plant, it is certainly worth while to keep up your vigilance, until you see full and satisfactory results. —Free Lance. SILT FOR CATTLE. Keep large masses of clay and salt (say three parts clay and one of salt), thoroughly mixed and kneaded, and then suudried, where all your stock can lick it at will. They necessarily eat more or less poison of various kinds, taken in with the grass in small quantities, or lurking in the stagnant water which they drink. These poi sons are insufficient in quantity to prove immediately fatal, still give rise to diseases in the animals, and in cases when the flesh is to be eaten,or, in cows whose milk we consume, they are carried over into the human sys tem, engendering maladies, whose or igin is never suspected, and whose re moval or cure may be difficult, if not impossible. Chloride of Sodium (common salt), is a prophylactic, or neutralizer of poisons, and will coun teract the effects of the milder forms of poisoning, when given in proper time and quantity. And the best guide as to time and quantity, are the demands of the animal’s own appe tite ; so leave the messes where they can be reached ad libitum. TAX NOTICE. So mild as to be safe and beneficial to eliildren, and yet so searching as to effectually purge out the great cor- ! ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous ; and syphilitic contamination. Impurities, I or diseases that have lurked in the system for years, soon yield to this powerful anti dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful cures, many of which are publicly known. ! of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases. Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive dis- j orders of the skin. Tumors, Blotches Boils, Pimples, Pustules Sores, St. Anthony’s Fire, Rose or Erjsipe las, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Ringworm, and internal Ul cerations of the Uterus, Stomach, and Liver. It also cures other com plaints, to which it would not seem especi ally adapted, such as Dropsy', Dyspep sia, Fits, Neuralgia, Heart Disease, Female Weakness, Debility, and Leucorrlioea, when they are manifesta tions of the scrofulous poisons. It is an excellent restorer of health and strength in the Spring. By renewing the appetite and vigor of the digestive organs, it dissipates the depression and listless lan guor of the season. Even where no disorder appears, people feel better, and live longer, for cleansing the blood. The system moves on with renewed vigor and anew lease of life. PREPARED B 7 Dr. J. C.
