Crawford, we learn, has rented a room j over Messrs. Pattillo, Baker & Co’s Hardware store, in the Mechanics’ Building, in this city, for the pur pose of organizing a Mechanic’s Building and Loan Association. A good institution that, and augurs well for our growing and prosperous little city. The finest store-rooms in the city are now being opened by Messrs. Pattillo, Baker & Cos., one as a Fam ily Grocery store, and the other as a Hardware, Agricultural, Implement, and Seed Store, in the Mechanics’ Building of Z. W. Jackson. They are now receiving a splendid stock of Groceries and Produce, and will, in a few days, begin to receive their new stock of Hardware, &c. Mr. H. A. Pattillo is now in New York making purchases for these houses. Messrs. Milam & Pritchett have opened in this city, at the old Ford & Moon Stables, a Sale and Feed Stable, where they now have nine teen head of fine mules for sale, and will continue to keep mules on hand for the next six months with which to supply the market. They also propose to feed stock at 25 cents per head. Bartow Superior Court adjourned over, on last Saturday, until the sec ond Monday in December next, when there will be an adjourned term of two weeks or more. Thi' Grand Jury of first week recommended the selling of the Court House, in this place, and the build ing of anew one, on account of its proximity to the railroad and the consequent disturbance by the noise arising from it; but the Jury of the second week recommended that no such thing be done. There seems to be a conflict of opinion. Who is to determine the question ? We learn that we are to have a number-one Restaurant, Confection ery and Bakery opened in this city soon, in the rooms recently occupied by .Mr. T. J. Bridges, under the City Hall. Capt. J. C. Maddox, of this city, lias one of the finest colts in Chero kee Georgia of its age, which will be on exhibition at the approaching Fair. We feel very well satisfied that it will wear off a blue ribbon. Wo learn that a prisoner was taken from the jail, in this city, on Sunday last, and tried for some offence. It seems a little strange to us, who live in this enlightened day, and that, too, in a Christian community, that it should be thought necessary to dis regard the holy Sabbath, by holding courts to determine the guilt or inno cence of a prisoner already confined in jail. Certainly a piece of a day and night could have made no very great excuse for violating the Chris tian Sabbatli in this way. SALE OF ROWLAND SPRINGS. It will be seen from advertisements in another column, that the Rowland Springs property, in this county, is to be sold at public outcry, before the j courthouse door, in this city, on the ■ first Tuesday in November next, by | Wm. L. Rowland, Executor, &c.— | This is among the most valuable pro perty in Cherokee Georgia. If the Cartersville Hook & Ladder j Company No. 1 expects to be uni- : formed ami ready for parade, at our approaching Fair, it is high time that. 1 they v. re up and doing. We further suggest that the company become al so an Infantry Company, and that they proceed to organize as such and apply for arms. We simply drop the latter suggestions for the consid eration of the company. Erwin, Stokely & Williams are be ginning to receive their new Fall and Winter Goods. The store-room recently vacated by ! Messrs. Pattillo, Baker & Cos., is now being refitted for a fresh stock. Our city stands very much in need of a laundry. Sewing machines are great friends to the ladies. See advertisement of the Wheeler & Wilson machine. A large, first-class, joint-stock hotel is now being set on foot, in our city, it is to be erected on the old Skinner hotel lot. All that is necessary to put it through is for our mechanics to take hold of it. Dr. Raker and Col. Roper announce themselves as independent candidates tor the Legislature—lower House— and I>. I. Godfrey for County Treas urer. ' Runaways are becoming quite com mon, of late, in our midst. Bruised bodies, broken' limbs and buggies, and demoralized stock make up the Ueijyik Go tAow,gouUemeui OUR CITY COUNCIL. The result of the election, in this city, on Wednesday last, is as follows: For Mayor—Col. Abda Johason. for ai.dfrmen: Ist Ward—A. P. Wofford and A. R. Hudgins. 2d Ward—J. C. Maddox and G. J. Briant. 3d Ward—W. C. Edwards and M. B. McGinty. 4th Ward—R. C. Roberts and R. W. Satterfield. These gentlemen elect were sworn into office by Justice Jolly, on Satur day morning last, and entered upon the duties of the same. We learn that the trucks, hooks, ladders, buckets, etc., for Cartersville Ilook and Ladder Company No. 1. 1 have been purchased in New York, 1 by Mr. J. A. Erwin, Agt. for the Council, and will arrive here soon. We hope to see the Company armed and equipped, preparatory to receiv- | ing them. Let the Company be uni formed at once. The Carriage and Wagon Manufac- j tory of Gower, Jones & Cos., in this j city, is turning out a great deal of work. This establishment is doing a j i splendid business. Everything on i the grit is kept moving. They are getting all the work they can stand up to, and orders pour in upon them, i Mess. Stall A Adams have opened j a number one Tin-ware and Stove Emporium, in the store-rooms recent- : ly occupied by J. C. Register. Here you can get your nice Tin-ware, '■ Stoves, and House-furnishing Goods. | They are active and energetic gentle men, and bound to do a good busi-! ness in their line. See advertisem’t. j . Messrs. Dobbs and Anderson have j removed their beef market around on the public square, between the Puck ett Hall corner and the post office, : where they propose to supply the j market, morning and evening, with nice, fresh, fat meats. See their adv. I THE COTTON CROP. There is no disguising the fact that the cotton crop of this section has been cut off' one-half by drouth, rust, and the caterpillar. The bulk of the crop will be picked out by the first of November. We find no young bolls nor blooms on the stalk to ma ture after the present bolls are open. Two pickings will house the bulk of the crop. One of our best farmers told us, a few days since, that two months ago lie had a prospect that would warrant him a hundred and fifty bales of cotton, but now be was j satisfied that he could not possibly j realize more than seventy-five bales, i This is about an average crop through ! this section. ETOWAH DRAGOONS. There will be a drill of the compa ny on Saturday afternoon. Compa ny will assemble in front of Roberts & Tumlin’s Stable at 2 o’clock. It is particularly requested that all members be present, as business of great importance will be brought be fore the company. P. M. B. Young, Capt. T. J. Lyon, O. S. The prizes to be contended for du ring Fair week, can be seen at Ed wards’ Harness Shop—a saddle, bri dle, spurs and saddle cloth. Any members of the Company can prac tice at the Head and Ring at the Fair Grounds, where necessary arrange ments have been made, from date un til contention comes off. We learn that Messrs. C. It. & T. J. Stone, of Rome, Ga., have bought half interest in the Bartow Iron Works, near this place. The sum of sixty thousand dollars is to be invest ed in these works, and, from an ad vestisement elsewhere in this paper, they petition to be incorporated un der the corporate name of the “Bar tow Iron Company.” This arrange ment looks like business. We learn that through the energy and business tact of Mr. Hugh Mc- Neal, these works have been turning out from five to seven tons of pig iron per day. (communicated.) Base Ball. —A “ scrub” game was played at Calhoun, last Saturday, between the “ Rebs,” of Kingston, and Etowah City, of Cartersviille. As there was some misunderstand ing about the game, we will not give the result. The Etowah City boys, while at Calhoun, were the guests of Messrs. Harkins, Freeman, and others, of the Cherokee Club, who are, in our estimation, perfect gentlemen. A match game was also played on the 12th inst., at this place, between Etowah City, of Cartersville, and Kennesaw, of Marietta, which re sulted in a score of 32 for the former, and 66 for the latter. The Marietta boys were also clever and accommo dating boys.— E. C. Reporter. Mr It P Milam lias arrived in the city with a lot of fine Kentucky rais ed mules, which may be seen at the sale and feed stables of Messrs. Milam & Pritchett, lie invites purchasers to call and see them before making their purchases. Protracted meeting at Presbyterian church begins Friday Night. The public is cordially invited to attend. Rev. J. D’Witt Burkhead, of Athens, : a preacher of marked ability, will ! conduct the meeting. Come at the beginning, and get the full benefit of a series of sermons that will continue some two weeks. Thomas M. Clarke & Cos., of At lanta, Ga.— The handsome three story brick store erected by thissterl i ing firm, on the corner of Peachtree j and Line streets, is an ornament to | that portion of Atlanta. It is 110 feet j in length, with a front of 35 feet on ! Peachtree street. It cost between | 815,000 and $20,000. Messrs. Clarke ! & Cos. do a heavy wholesale trade in ! hardware. The basement is devoted to hollow-ware, hubs, spokes and rims, etc. A force pump supplies the | entire establishment with water. The first floor is fitted up with taste. The shelves are filled with neat box es, with samples of the articles on the outside. Here can be found every thing in the hardware line. Iu the rear is the counting-room and book keeper’s office, conveniently arrang ! e<l. A large wareroom in the rear of this is devoted exclusively to iron, nails, etc. The second floor is also well filled with stock. A handsome front room is being fitted for a sam ple room. The third floor is a spa cious, well ventilated hall. We are ever pleased to chronicle the success of our enterprising mer chants. By strict attention to busi ness, and sterling integrity, Messrs. Clarke & Cos. have developed a big 1 business ! P. H. Brewster, Local & Ag’l. Ed. IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS. Some person unknown has sent to ! our address certain radical documents, which we have not the time nor the j inclination to read. What do we | eare about the “ proceedings of the Republican State Central Commit itee!” We have seen and heard J enough of the proceedings of them and I their sort:, and are anxiously waiting for the time to come when they shall ! proceed no further in their diabolical | efforts to bankrupt, degrade and ruin I the country. If they would all fol low the great and immortal Bullock, their beloved chief, and trouble us no more, we would heartily endorse such a proceeding ! And what do we care about “ Grant’s amnesty record,” or any other record that he has ever made? He and his party have been making a record that shall “damn them to everlasting fame,” and we don’t think they ought to be proud of it—we are certain that we are not, and we know the country has no cause to be. We are at a loss to know why such precious documents as those mentioned above, should be sent to us, for we had hoped that we were “ above suspicion” in such respects. We wish you to understand, gentle men that we have no sympathy for you nor any of your vile measures, and intend that our record shall be clean in the future as it has been in the past. Ijotterg men, and manufacturers of bo gus greenbacks have never insulted us by sending us any of their “confi dential” documents, and we hope that your zeal in a bad course may tempt you no more to commit such an act of presumption. We do not thank you for your favors, nor need you hope that we may ever grant you j one. We wish you to understand that we are a native Georgian , and a descendant of a patriotic, South Car olina ancestry, and shall “ govern ourself accordingly. B. CROPS IN CHEROKEE. We have just returned from a visit to Cherokee county, and are pleased to report the corn crops as being unu sually fine. The recent hot, dry weather has afforded the farmers an excellent opportunity to save fodder, and a line supply of that necessary artiele has been secured. The drouth has cuf off the cotton crop iu that county to a considerable extent —at least one-third it is thought. We examined the crop of our young friend, L. W. McKinney, who is a model farmer, and found it very good under the circumstances. He thinks lie will not fall far short of a bale per acre. That is certainly good croping for this latitude. B. Married, on the 12th inst., by the J unior Local editor of this paper, Mr. J. D. Findly and Miss Mary E. Law, all of Bartow county. B. A Serious Accident.— On last Saturday Mr. Joseph Britt, of our place, took his wife and child into his buggy to take a ride, and as he drove faster than was prudent, by some means the buggy was upset, and the party was thrown out. Mr. Britt was seriously injured about the head, and at this time (Tuesday) liis condi tion is thought to be exceedingly crit ical. Mrs. B. was also badly hurt, an arm and rib being broken and she otherwise bruised and mauglcd. Strange to say, the child escaped uu hus. Mrs. B’s. condition is also con sidered to be very precarious. We hope, however, that they both will speedily recover from their injuries. B. Fights were brisk in our city on last Saturday evening, several skir mishes having occurred on our streets. Cause, whiskey. Certain freed men are in the habit of coming to town on Saturday evenings, getting drunk, and otherwise exercising their dear bought and inalienable rights. For the most part they are disposed to be peaceable and quiet, when sober; but like a minister of the gospel of the hard-shell pursuasion that we once heard of, they are disposed to be quarrelsome when drank. Ah whis key ! whiskey! we fear it will ruin the country yet, and cause trouble which many do not dream of now. B. Died, of Diptlieria, August 30, 18- 72, Helen Rosalie, youngest child of Madison and Susan Milam, aged 3 years, 2 months, and 23 days. “I was dumb, I opened not my mouth, because thou didst it.” * C Ladies, consult your health as well as your pecuniary interest. Vandivere, aged 11 months and 10 days. Special attention is asked to the advertisement of J. G. Jones, Mer chant Tailor, Mr. Jones is successor to J. H. Purtell, so extensively and favorably known, and is fully sus taining the reputation of the house. This house keeps nothing but first rate goods, none but first-class work men, and withal is one of the very best Clothing establishments in At lanta or elsewhere. “POST HASTE.” A mule belonging to A. J. Weems, Esq., was seen one day during court week, running at full speed through our streets, with a stout post attached to the bridle. Great respect was shown the frightened animal, for every one who happened to be any where near the line of its march, gave it the streets and side-walks, without the least resistence. We were among the fortunate ones who come very near being ran over and wasen’t! The post was not injured. B. ANNIVERSARY MEETING. Editori - : —Please announce my name as a candidate for Tax Receiver for Bar tow county, at the approaching eleection. JASON T. BAILEY Valuable Hints. A regular habit of body is absolutely essen tial to physical health and clearness of intel lect. Nor is this all. Beauty of person cannot co-exist with an unnatural condition of the bowels. A free passage of the refuse matter of the system through these natural waste pipes is as necessary to the purity of the body as the free passage of tne offal of a city through its sewers is necesary to the health of its inhabit ants. Indigestion is the primary cause of most of the diseases of the discharging organs, and one of Its most common results is constipation. This complaint, besides being dangerous in it self, has many disagreeable concomitants—such as an unpleasant breath, a sallow skin, con taminating blood and bile, hemorrhoids, head ache, loss of memory, and general debility. Jlostetter’s Stomach Bitters remove all these evils liy removing their immediate cause in the digestive organs, and regulating the action of the intestines. The combination of properties in this celebrated preparation is one of its chief merits. It is not merely a stimulant or a tonic, or an antibillious agent, or a nervine, or a blood depureut, or a cathartic, but all these curative elements judiciously blended in one powerful restorative. It lends activity and vigor to the inert and enervated stomach, relieves the ail mentary canal of its obstructions, and gives tone to the membrane which lines it, gently stimulates the liver, braces the nerves, and cheers the animal spirits. No other remedy possesses such a variety of hygienic virtues. It is to these characteristic virtues that it owes its prestige as a household medicine. Experi ence has proved that it is as harmless as it is efficacious, and hence it is as popular with the weaker sex as with the stronger. Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters are sold in bot tles only, ami the trade-mark blown in the glass and engraved on the label is tho test of genuineness. Beware of counterfeits. SPECIAL NOTICES. The chief of blessings is good health, i without which nothing is worth the having; it ii» always appreciated at its true value alter it is lost, but, too often, not before. Live proper ly, and correct ailments before they become | eated. For diseases of the liver, kidneys, skin, 1 stomach, and all arising trorn impure or teeble i blood, 1)R. Walker's California Vineoar i Bitters is a sure and speedy remedy. It has never yet failed in single instance. 8-29—4 w Bottles Full of Beauty.—Ladies, if you would have beauty by the bottle-full, all you have to do is to purchase Hagan’s Magnolia Balm. That peerless beau tiller of the complex ion not only heightens natural charms, but renders even the plainest countenance exceed ingly attractive. It recalls to the pallid cheek the rosy tinge of health, removes pimples, blotches, roughness, sallownoss and other blemishes, and imparts to the skin a most deli cate fairness and softness. It smooths the fur rows caused by time or care, and gives face, neck and arms the plump and engaging ap pearance of youthful beauty. All this is ac complished by the most natural means, viz: by gently and naturally stimulating the cireula tion in the capillary blood vessels. Besides be ing the most effectual aid to beauty known to modern science. PIMI’LES, ERUPTIONS, ROUGH SKIN. Thesvstem being put under the influence of Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery ofa few weeks, the skin becomes smooth, clear, soft and velvety, and being illuminated with the glow of perfect health from within, true beauty stands forth in all its glory. Nothing ever pre sented to the public as a beautifier of the com plexion ever gave such satisfaction for this purpose as this Discovery. The effects of all medicines which operate upon the system through the medium of the blood are necessa rilv somewhat slow, no matter liow good the remedy employed. While one to three bottles clear the skin of pimples, blotches, eruptions, yellow spots, comedones or “grubs,” a dozen mav possibly be required to cure some cases where the system is rotten with scrofulous or . virulent blood poisons The cure of all these diseases, however, from the common pimple to the worst tcrofula, is with the use of this most potent agent, only a matter of time. BRANSOX. Kingston, Georgia, September 15, 1872. Doctor J. S. I‘tmbetion: Dear Sir—it gives me pie:, ure to furnish you with an account of tho remarkable cure which I have experienced trom the use of vour Compound Extract of Stillingia. For sixteen ) cars I have been a great sufferer front Scrofula in its most distressing form*. 1 have been confined to my room and bed for fifteen years with scrofulous ulcerations. Suol.was my condition—far more painful and distressing than language can describe. Most of tho time I was unable to rise from bed. The most approved remedies for such cases hud been used, and the most eminent physicians consulted, without anv decided benefit. Thus prostrated, distn >-ed despointing. 1 was advised bv Doctor A \ er, of Floyd county, Georgia, tocoanuenee the use of your Compound Extract of stillingiu. Language is insufficient to describe tho relief I obtained from the use of the Stillingia as it is to convey an adcquifle idea ofthe intensitv of my suffering before using your medicine; sufficient to say, lam cured "of ail pain," of ali disease, with nothing to obstruct the active pursuit of my profession. -More than eight months have elapsed since this remarkable , cure, without any return <**' the d*.-ea»o. [ For the above statement I r*t»>r to an> r u«utivmM iu Bartow cotuilv, Georgia, and I*o the members of the bar drchefibkco Circuit, I who are acquainted with me. 1 hall ever | remain, sir. with the deepest gratitude.
