On last Sabbath this able and emi nent divine occupied the pulpit of the Baptist church, in this city, and preached three moving sermons, to crowded houses. In the morning he was followed, in thought, by his audience, with Christ from the cradle to the cross. It is said by many who heard him, to have been one of the most powerful sermons that they ever before listened to. In the after noon, and again at night, his discour ses were founded upon the sufferings of the Apostles and Martyrs and the Church of Christ—that this is emi nently a dispensation of suffering.— Many encouraging words and inspir ing thoughts were advanced by the speaker, and many of his hearers took fresh courage to endure hard ships as good soldiers of the cross.— He arged that the failure of a right eous person or cause did not imply that either was unrighteous, and quoted passage after passage of script ure, and enumerated various instan ces in history, to prove this great fundamental truth. God often choos es the vile of earth to chasten the good. He has not only accomplish ed a vast deal of good by his preach ing, but has done much to cement the heart* of Christians oflhU denom inations in the bonds of Christian love. He has inaugurated a state of feeling in all the churches toward each other, that, we trust, will re dound to the glory of God and the building up of his jieople. If ever an earthly shepherd did lead his fold into green pastures and beside still waters, he did. In his series of ser mons he has truly cast his bread up on the waters, which will, doubtless, be gathered for many days to come. He has endeared himself to our peo ple, of every name and order; and it was with regrets that they had to part with him yesterday. His mem ory will live in their affections, and his name will be written upon the tablets of their hearts. May the over-spreading wings of the Al mighty ever protect him, and his little family wherever their lots may be cast. A VALUABLE ACCESSION. We are truly glad to learn that our enterprising and energetic young friend, Charlie Wallace, son of the prince of rail road men, Major Campbell Wallace, of Atlanta, has bought an interest in the Carters ville Car Factory, and has been elect ed one of the Directors. Charlie is a thorough-going, drive-ahead man, and one of the best rail road men of his age in America. His fa ther says that he excels him. It is a conceded fact by all who are acquaint ed with Major Wallace that his superior in the construction and man agement of rail roads is not to be found on this or any other continent, and Charlie is closely following in his foot-steps. We are informed that this factory is getting all the work that they can do in their building de partment. Vast quantities of lum ber are dressed at this establishment and sent off on the rail roads. With the energies of young Mr. Wallace combined with that of the company, a bright and sucessful future awaits the young und prosperous manufac tory. lie will bring to bear upon it an influence that will be felt, and that will count in dollars and cents. Now let us have the Iron Foundry in connection, and the entire success of the Cartersville Car Factory and Building Association is certain.— Charlie is already a successful rail road master, having been for several years past Superintendent of th® Sel ma A Meridian Rail Road. We con gratulate both the Company and the citizens of Cartersville upon this val uable accession. The Skating Rink will be open to morrow (Friday) night. Mr. Chas. and Miss Floy Dixon, of Louis ville, Ky., the champion skaters of the South, will be in attendance.— Our Brass Band will furnish music for the occasion. See advertisement. We came up from Atlanta on the night of the Bth, on Capt. David J. Wyly’s train, in a coach that looked so neat and tidy that we were con strained to ask the conductor w r ho it was that attended to it, and were told that it was our young friend, Sam’l Sterling, of Cass Station. The W. A A. R. R. Cos. has, in Sam, a sober and industrious boy, and one that will make his mark in the railroad busi ness. Cartersville, 9th—Cotton 16 cents,. How to get Rich.— The old way of getting rich by saving is the cor rect one, the surest, and generally as certain as attempts at quicker pro gress. Whenever you save a dollar your have made a dollar—and if you make it a rule to save in everything, every time you have an opportunity you are almost certain to reach the goal. Save! Farmer.— “ What do you know about farming ?” We know a good deal more about it than we practice; and so do you, we suspect. Old Subscriber.—You say to stop your paper! We were not aware that you had a paper! We are cer tain that you have not paid for one here in a long time. If, however, we see your paper flying round we will stop it if we can. “Sweet Sixteen.”— We don’t know why the boys are so bashful. We suppose they are waiting for you to make some advances, as it is leap year. Make a start, but “ look before you leap,” as there are not many young ladies able to support the young men of the present day. Sportsman. —We don’t see any harm in horses racing, provided no one is on their backs, there is noth ing bet on them and no one is in the way. Skater.— “ What do you think of the skating rink ?” We don’t think much about it. Prude.— “ What do you think of the present style of ladies’ dresses ?” We think they look pretty well when one gets use to ’em. In some instances they seem to be overdone, but what is that to us ? Upstart.— Of course you have the right to show your good breeding by using profane and indecent language in the presence of ministers and oth ers, if you want to. If it is offensive to them, let them get out of the way. B. Do you want to keep dry ? Buy a Waterproof Umbrella at Howard A Ramsaur’s. Saxon and two of her children were leaving Mr. T. B. Shockley’s on last Saturday, in a buggy, the horse became suddenly frightened, ran the buggy into a ditch, which caused the party to fall out, broke loose and ran off. We w ent in company with Dr. Kirkpat rick to the spot where the accident occurred, and found Mrs. Saxon in a senseless condition, but before we left consciousness was restored, and we were gratified to learn that her inju ries were not so serious as was first supposed. The children, we are glad to state, escaped unhurt. B. JAMES E. WALKER. We have a genius in our city. His name is James E. Walker, son of Mr. F. M. Walker. He w T as born in the State of North Carolina, but has re sided in Bartow county for several years past. He is only about 18 years of age. His opportunities have been poor, as his father’s means are limit ed ; yet he has given proof that he is gifted as an artist in no ordinary de gree, as all will agree who noticed the paintings which he exhibited at the late Fair. One of those paintings was a life-like portrait of Capt. Pea cock, another a fine picture of Mr. H. C. Hanson, and a beautiful represen tation of a view on the Etowah Riv er near the old Rolling-Mill, togeth er with some smaller paintings which were well executed. Young Walker ought to be encouraged and assisted that his rare gifts may be fully devel oped. B. NOTICE TO THE PEOPLE. It is generally conceded that claims for cotton taken after the war by agents of the United States from the owners, (while still in their posses sion,) when it had been subscribed to the Confederate loan, and was marked C. S., cannot be paid under the provisions of the act of May 18th, 1872, (which provides for payment for cotton illegally seized,) without a very liberal construction of the law, but lam of the opinion that the act will be amended to provide for their payment also. Even when they received Confederate Bonds, and the cottbn remained in the own er’s possession after the war, the bonds becoming worthless and the consideration having failed, the ownership, if ever changed, reverted to the person who owned the cotton at the time it was subscribed. It is important to have the claims presented at as early a day as possi ble, otherwise they may be debarred by act of May 18th, 1872, which re quires all claims for pay for cotton seized illegally, etc., to be filed be fore the 18th of November, 1872. I desiro to get sufficient number of tliene claims to justify me in working before Congress in the matter. I think it advisable that all who paid the cotton tax under act of Congress, July, 1866, file their claims for the same. They will ultimately be paid. I will give prompt and careful at tention to the prosecution of all cases of this character placed in my hands. R. W. MURPHY, Attorney and Solicitor for Claims. Have it Always at Hand.— Accidents will happen in the best regulated families, and for this rea son among many others, the Mus tang Liniment should find a place in the cupboard of every household. In all the world there is nothing comparable to it as an application for cute, contusions, burns, spasms, and scalds, and when every other prepa ration that medical ingenuity can suggest has failed to afford relief in rheumatism, neuralgia, sore throat, glandular swellings, muscular con tractions, cramps, toothache, Ac., thia powerful anti-inflamatory and pain-destroying agent immediately assuages the sufferer’s agony and eventually accomplishes a radical cure. Probably there is not a eon noiseur in horse flesh or an amateur horseman in the land who does not know, either from personal observa tion or reports, that the Mustang Liniment is the supreme remedy for all external diseases and injuries of the horse. THE SECRET OF BEAUTY. —What is it ? do longer asked, for the world of fashion and all the ladies know that it is produced by us ing a delightful and harmless toilet prepara tion known as G. W. Laird’s “Bloom of Youth,” its beautifying effects are truly wonderful Depot, 5 Gold St., N. Y. Old Things Have I’as|gd Away. This is at least true of the old method of treat ing the long abused and much abused human bodv. It is no longer considered wise to put a Satfent to the torture in order to cure him of a isease in which pain is already undermining the energies of his system. True science ranges itself on the side ol nature, and endeavors to assist her in her fight against disease. This is the province of Ilostetter’s Stomach Bitters, the most approved tonic ever advertised in this country. It may be recommended as a fall medicine, par excellence; for it is in the fall that billiousness, dyspepsya and malarious fe vers are especially prevalent. The frame, ex hausted by the heats of summer, is relaxed and feeble at its close, and requires, wo may say de mands, artificial assistance. Afford it that as sistance in occasional doses of Hostctter’s Stomach Bitters, and the evils referred to may be escaped. Throughout the far West, and on the steaming alluvial of the Southern rivers, all the varieties of periodical fever are probably rife to-day. Had a course of Hostetter’s Bit ters been commenced by the sufferers a month ago, i. before the unhealthy season sets in, seven-eighths of them would in all probability be in their usual lieulth at the present time. So much for waut of foreeastc. So much for not keeping in the house, and using daily the best safeguard against epidemic and endemic fe vers. As floods of imposters and imitators are try ing to follow in the wake of the great Ameri can remedy, therefore be sure that the article you buy is genuine and verified by the proper trade-marks. The true article caii only be ob tained in bottles. Beware of the spurious bit ters sold by the gallon or in kegs. 10-3-tm Legal Advertisements. BARTOW COUNTY. Corporation Notice.
